seems not having shareholders isn't such a bad thing for customers. Fancy that ?

Hmmm, a bit disappointed. I have a small mortgage and current account with them but do smaller payments every 3 months or so, so didn't hit £500 twice even though paid over £1k overall.

Lemursandions · 20/05/2023 06:36

I agree the card reader is a bit antiquated but I actually find them pretty good to bank with - certainly better than many other high street banks I’m with/have been with. Their saving products for members are also usually pretty good. Their customer services was also super helpful to me recently when my circumstances changed very suddenly.

Luckily these days it’s fairly easy to switch so if people don’t want to bank with them anymore they can!

I'd need to go into a branch to add my own bank account as a payee

@katseyes7 you can get a card reader in the branch, I've got three or four knocking around.

Agree the criteria are unfair if you have savings with them but no current account. They have to draw a line somewhere, but that's not the way to do it.

I'm one that has a lot of savings with them and just the basic Flex current account that I use for shifting my savings in and out, because it's not my main current account I didn't meet the criteria as I don't pay money in very often from elsewhere. One of the reasons I don't want Nationwide as my main account is because of things like he card reader and its not as user friendly as other bank accounts. I shall probably move my savings elsewhere because of this.

DreamItDoIt · 20/05/2023 08:54

To the poster about adding payees - this is done on purpose as their systems cannot cope with members having lots of payees - this is why they automatically delete payers you haven't used for 12 months.

User14528564 · 20/05/2023 08:59

Blimey that sounds a pain if they delete payees after 12 months, I have people like the caravan service man in the payee list that often goes over 12 months between services.

EversoDisorganised · 20/05/2023 09:23

Oh, I have been with them for my current account less than a year so didn't realise they delete payees after a year, on balance I think that's good.

Barclays do it too and while it is very occasionally annoying, I find my extremely long payee list with NW that transferred over from Lloyds far more worse as it is full of almost-duplicates where businesses have changed their accounts and you have to take great care to pick the correct one, people I made a one off payment to 10 years ago etc and no way of deleting them. Just looked and there is one from a pre-school DD attended (she's at college now), a payee with a ref Hen Night and I haven't the faintest idea whose hen night it was, glad they will all be disappearing in due course.

DreamItDoIt · 20/05/2023 09:55

Sorry don't agree. People should be encouraged to housekeep their own payees.
The easiest mistake to make is to mistype a digit and it ends up going to the wrong account. They should create a system that enables people to identify key payees and keep them and then automatically let them know when other payees Willa be deleted.

Anyway my point was that their systems are outdated compared to other banks.

EversoDisorganised · 20/05/2023 10:02

The introduction of checking the name against the account number makes mistyping errors far less likely. I have now managed to find a way of deleting payees in the app so will have a clearout, there didn't seem to be a way with Lloyds hence being stuck with a long list.

User14528564 · 20/05/2023 10:35

I have deleted payees from Lloyds but on the website not the app, don't know if you can do it on the app, often the website has more functions though

Maybe in your local branch but not in mine, I needed a new one a couple weeks ago and they said they had to order it

You can use other banks card readers so if you have another one hanging about you can use that. Barclays certainly works

I dont have any other banks with systems as antiquated as Nationwide but how would it know my pin if I was able to get one?

Midgetwithaplan · 20/05/2023 11:54

I agree with the posters who consider this the final push to change to a less clunky current account. Neither husband nor I qualify for the £100 due to not having the £100 in a savings account, despite having £000s in our current accounts during March. We're both switching to first direct for the £175 switching bonus and hopefully the end of the card reader!

ukhgf · 20/05/2023 12:16

NatWest and Barclays use card readers too (not sure to what extent they rely on them vs NW). I hate the card reader but Nationwide has the lowest levels of fraud apparently so it's not without merit (assuming there is a correlation!)

KnittedCardi · 20/05/2023 13:04

DH and I both getting it, DD2 has her student a/c with them plus savings, so she gets it too. Happy days.

LadyShimura · 20/05/2023 13:11

There is a check to qualify on the website to anyone who is unsure.

Or if you have had a pop up on the app, you qualify.

My mum works for Nationwide and told me this.

LIZS · 20/05/2023 13:27

Ds seems to meet criteria but had no message or notification on the app. Dd had an email. Confused

Oopsididitagaintomorrow I've just tried again to add my Halifax current account as a payee onto my Nationwide online banking. It won't allow me to do it without a card reader, which l don't have, l always get the text verification code, but apparently that isn't sufficient. I'd need to go into a branch to add my own bank account as a payee, which is ridiculous in this day and age.

Get a card reader then!

You can use anyone’s card reader. It isn’t linked to your card or PIN You type your pin in plus amount and account payee. The algorithm generates a code they you use to approve the payment. It’s simple programming!

Maybe we're talking about different gadgets, the reason I needed a new one was because I forgot the pin and accidentally locked it. How would using a different banks reader solve that?

dementedpixie · 20/05/2023 14:21

Do you not just need to order a new pin for your card then?

Yes, have a new PIN but then the card reader would only turn on for a second or two (it may or may not have come into contact with some coffee 😀) so it was easiest just to order a new one

They whole logging on process is so ridiculously clunky that I very rarely use the account, I was only trying to make a payment and ended up going into a branch. I see from the above that I'm not the only one who finds it frustrating

HelebethH · 20/05/2023 14:49

I've had a savings account for over 20 years and I get nothing. ☹️
