Another fatal dog attack.

Ostryga · 19/05/2023 15:58

A 37 year old man has lost his life to a ‘dangerously out of control’ dog and the owner has been arrested. The dog was put down.

How many more people have to lose their lives before something is done about out of control animals?!

yeah i just did. They have cute faces but bloody hell, they're the size of a horse.

I have no skin in the game. I'm not particularly afraid of dogs, but i don't particularly like them because they smell of dog and they slobber sometimes. I'm allergic too.

but where i work people are allowed to bring their dogs in. Currently there are 2 big ones that come and a chiuaua (sp??) and they're all lovely and really make the office a lovely place to work. Albeit one that smells of dog

MorrisZapp · 19/05/2023 19:01

Lol that's a throwback! I remember when this was all fields, and there wasn't yet a smoking ban in pubs.

I had forty million arguments with online geniuses who thought we shouldn't ban cigarettes because cars are worse.

Laughable logic.

Lovemusic33 · 19/05/2023 19:32

Most dogs are only suited to certain homes, most were originally bred to do a job and some just don’t make good pets. I am often wary of collies and huskies, though I have met some lovely ones but I have also met so not so nice ones, same with German shepherds, to me they are a guard dog, years ago people had them on farms or to protect property/land or as police dogs, to me they don’t make a great pet. When I was a kid a springer spaniel bit my face, luckily not causing much damage, I dread to think what the outcome would be if it was XL bull dog.

It’s a shame that people can randomly go on gumtree and buy a puppy with no experience and no vetting of what kind of home they are providing. I know several XL bull dogs that live in council flats, rarely get walked and are housed with young children.

Nonchalent · 19/05/2023 19:32

Haven’t read the full thread but can confirm I am related to the man who died and the dog was an American bulldog. We are all shocked and devastated. It wasn’t his dog. I agree with the comments about the size of those dogs. If one turns as happened in this case, you wouldn’t stand a chance and sadly he didn’t.

Lilacsbloominspring · 19/05/2023 19:38

I’m sorry for your loss @Nonchalent and no doubt this is an awful day for you. I can’t imagine what you are going through. Irrespective of our views of dogs on this thread that may differ I am sure people are mindful of this awful loss.

Misspacorabanne · 19/05/2023 19:39

I don’t agree with those posters saying the answer isnt to ban the bully xl breed! I think that’s exactly what needs to happen to start with!

The amount of fatal attacks from this breed compared to other breeds is much more!

They are huge strong dogs, and let’s be honest here, are becoming increasingly popular with a certain type of individual!
I won’t take my child to the local park anymore as many of these intimidating looking dogs run free as well as others and quite frankly I’m terrified of them! Instead I look for dog free parks for my children.

At what point will they consider banning this breed? Does anybody know? How did it work with other banned breeds? How many more people need to die before they take action??

wetotter · 19/05/2023 19:41

I’ve said this before, if we can set up a functioning, efficient system, with wardens patrolling the streets in order to control parking, we can do the same with dogs! There’s no will for it though

Most of the recent attacks (and I think the vast majority of all attacks) happen on private property, so although this could be done, it wouldn't really make a difference.

It's already the law that puppies must be chipped before they are sold. I'm not sure how the presence of a chip is going to do anything to stop a shitty owner being shitty.

And even if a few more breeds were banned - shitty owners will just move on to another "tough" breed and raise them to be scarily aggressive

Dogs kill approximately 5 people per year in the UK.

Cars kill approxmately 1,500 people per year in the UK.

How about we start with controlling cars first.

How many dogs are there in the UK vs how many cars?
How about we stop voting Tory and vote for a party that will improve the public transport infrastrucure, which will (hopefully) tackle the problem we have with the numer of cars on the roads?

Then reintroduce dog licences.

Lilacsbloominspring · 19/05/2023 19:42

I am really surprised they haven’t @Misspacorabanne

Banning or restricting breeds obviously isn’t a perfect solution but it’s surely a start.

Misspacorabanne · 19/05/2023 19:43

@Nonchalent im so sorry for the loss of your relative!
Honestly they need to go!! I bloody hate the xl bully breed! I don’t believe it’s always the way they are brought up, although that makes up a big part of the dogs behaviour, but it’s definitely the breed, they are breed to look
and come across intimidating!
I saw one walking towards me with a young male owner and my heart nearly stopped! It was on a lead but they are huge and so strong looking!

CoffeeYes · 19/05/2023 19:44

@TeaParty4Me Yorkshire terriers and chihuahuas that attack for no reason?

Ffs you’re saying a tiny chihuahua with teeny tiny teeth is the same as a huge muscular beast of a dog aka bully breeds? If a chihuahua bit me then I could shake it off. If a bully type bit me then I would either die or have life changing injuries. I’m a petite woman so I wouldn’t stand a chance against one of those beasts. Dogs of that build should not be kept as pets.

Misspacorabanne · 19/05/2023 19:45

@Lilacsbloominspring i agree completely!

kitsuneghost · 19/05/2023 19:47

Too many people think 'not my dog he is a big softy' or 'it's not the dog, it's the owner' or 'but my dog has great recall'. All of these show the disrespect we have for these animals abilities.
They are not simply pets they are animals with their own wants needs and drives.

Nomowmay · 19/05/2023 19:47

We need to licence breeders and have a policy of neutering everyone else's dogs.

No licence, no breeding. Breeders should be inspected and checked to ensure they are offering high levels of welfare and breeding for the right reasons.

I know that this will be controversial but I believe it is the only way forward.

kitsuneghost · 19/05/2023 19:51

And who thd hell replies to someone getting killed by a dog with but xxxx kills people too. It's as bad as saying dogs kill people anyway so we might aswell have guns.

I’m so sorry. Such a horrific incident and I wish there was something I could say to make any of it better.

Sending all my love at this incredibly difficult time.

if the dog attacks the owner is 100% responsible

This doesn’t work for two reasons.

Firstly, a lot of the recent cases have been the owners of the dogs who lost their lives.

Secondly, the owners often don’t care about being responsible. I’m not going to bother beating around the bush here, a lot of them
get the dogs in the first place either to attack or as defence. What’s the punishment? A fine? They don’t care. They don’t care about community service or even a short jail term. They really don’t.

Thats why you have to have something that clearly states - no, you actually cannot have this breed.

If you ban the breed they'll just move on to another breed or cross. How many court cases has their been over what is or what isn't a pit bull?
If people risk going to prison they'll think twice about keeping an unpredictable dog, esp a big heavy, muscular dog that they can't control.

I don't believe the 'family pets' who kill on their very first attack. They'll have been warnings, signs of aggression from the dog before.

Misspacorabanne · 19/05/2023 20:19

Yes I agree if you ban the bully xl people will move on to breeding something else that’s equally as dangerous, but at the same time there are so many of these bully xl dogs around now, that attacks are growing increasingly more common and more likely unfortunately, they are very popular by a certain type of individual, the number of these dogs about now in some places are so high that the safest thing to do is ban the breed completely.

Do remember that it is all the child's fault here. It is never the dogs nor the breed. Dogs do have more right to go into shops, on transport and shop. We much prefer our dogs to your crotch goblins.

Or so the dog fanatics would say. Fuck dogs and insane dog owners.

JustHowItIs · 19/05/2023 20:29

@Brefugee they can be beautiful dog.

the owners are the problem, not the dogs.

Another fatal dog attack.
Misspacorabanne · 19/05/2023 20:30

@JustHowItIs that’s just a puppy!
A fully grown bully is completely different! Dangerous dogs!!

Nonchalent · 19/05/2023 20:32

Thanks for your kind comments. I was wary of this type of dog before this happened. There was one running around the park where my children were playing football recently and I was frightened then. Now I’ll be heading straight home if that happens again. Fact is if one goes for you or your child you will not be able to control it or prevent it from causing harm. Without providing you with unnecessary detail my family were unable to see their loved one because of the injuries he sustained. Ill be joining the campaign for banning the breed for obvious reasons. I know it’s not a silver bullet and other breeds will emerge but what are we to do, allow the population explosion to continue and just accept this risk? I personally don’t think we should.
