Pregnant at 43?!

Stripypillow · 19/05/2023 10:44

I haven’t actually taken a test yet because I’m a bit scared to. Mostly because it would be an amazing but terrifying thing to be pregnant! I am 10 days late, and feel pregnant (headachey, sore boobs, sort of strange feeling that I had last time).

DH and I thought we couldn’t have another dc, we were told we had secondary infertility and conceiving naturally would be highly unlikely. DS is 10!

I know I might not even be pregnant. But if I am… anyone else had a baby at 43?! How did it go? I’m terrified for so many reasons! One that I’m not pregnant and have let myself fantasise about it for the last couple of days, another that I am and would miscarry because of my age, another that I am and would feel like an old mum…

I live in an area where women having babies in their 40s is normal. I have friends with babies and toddlers, so wouldn’t be completely left out.

Anyone had a baby at 43? How did it go?

Placemarking! Hope you get the result you want x

I know someone who just had their 1st at 43 -they seem to be loving it.

pimplebum · 19/05/2023 15:08

I had my second at 45
Downs and Edward's test is now 99% accurate at 10 weeks yes or no which makes big difference

You are very much not alone and it's a growing trend

Jk987 · 19/05/2023 15:09

Take a test today. No point in delaying...

I found out I was pregnant with my first on my 44th birthday! Very smooth pregnancy and have a gorgeous daughter now❤️

Fingers crossed for you.

If you're ten days late you won't need FMW 🤞🏻

God I am terrified of the test! Off to get DS from school now, will sneak and buy a test beforehand from the chemist, which I’ll hide in my bag, ready to take with tomorrow’s first wee. AAHH.

If you're 10 days late you don't need to wait for the morning. There should be sufficient pregnancy hormones in your system at any time of day.

justme2022 · 19/05/2023 15:12

I had my first at 41 and second and 42. Both smooth pregnancies and labour (although both induced)
Mine are at nursery now and I think there's more older mums than younger.

Good luck op, bet you've never had so many people waiting for you to have a wee. 😂

slowsundays · 19/05/2023 15:13

If you're ten days late, just test today. You won't need first morning pee.

MariaDingbat · 19/05/2023 15:14

40 when I had my first, 42 when my 2nd arrived. Other than gestational diabetes, both pregnancies were fine, I recovered quickly from the sections and both kids are healthy and absolutely brilliant. We're soooo tired (2 year old and 5 month old) but that's going to happen whatever age you are! I did get the harmony test for both, given my age we wanted to know. Good luck!

LSSG · 19/05/2023 15:15

Yes I had DS a week after turning 43, very healthy pregnancy, a tough first year of not much sleep but not particularly due to my age, just that he was a rubbish sleeper he's still not great but much better, and otherwise is a joy. we have a largish age gap too (though not as big as yours) but so far that has been the best thing about it all - they absolutely adore each other! Hope it lasts. Makes all the hard bits worthwhile.

Hope I won't feel too old by the time he starts school. At least a few of the dads in my older child's year (2) are at least 50 odd and no one bats an eyelid.

SmurfHaribos · 19/05/2023 15:17

I was but I miscarried. Sadly about 50% of pregnancies miscarry in women in their early 40s.

Good luck @Stripypillow

I had a baby at 43, she is amazing , 16 now .

TooManyPlatesInMotion · 19/05/2023 15:21

Test today - you don't need to wait until the morning (and we can't stand the suspense op!). Good luck.

Tommythetortoise · 19/05/2023 15:25

Another one who had an uneventful pregnancy in my 40s - I was 44 when I gave birth and everything was fine. I’m probably one of the older mums in the playground, but not noticeably so and it’s never bothered me.

Wishing you the best of luck OP, I hope you get the result you want.

Camillasfagwrinkles · 19/05/2023 15:28

Well I'm 42 and I'm in hospital for obs but due to have a baby in a week or so. I was expecting to miscarry early on due to my age so obviously delighted that she's nearly here.

As a single lady aged 32 who would love to be a mum but feels like I am domed to be an old maid, these stories have brightened my day.
Good luck OP.

This!

33 & unmarried here.

Such an uplifting thread.

bluebeck · 19/05/2023 15:33

Good luck!!!

sazzy5 · 19/05/2023 15:35

I had a pregnancy at 45, it was ectopic though, my doctor wasn’t shocked I was pregnant and said it happened more often than you’d think.
Good luck.

Iusedtobedontcall · 19/05/2023 15:37

I was at 42 but terminated as she had downs. Had a MMC at 41. Trying again and very hopeful.

If 10'days late you defo don't need to wait for first morning wee. Had 3 kids all tests were took at night time only 2 Days after a missed period and all clearly positive

nevermindtime · 19/05/2023 15:38

My great-grandmother was 44 when she accidentally fell pregnant with my grandmother. No issues! She already had children who were 12 and 14 years old.

Good luck OP! x

Ionlydrinkondaysendinginy · 19/05/2023 15:41

I never understand people making such a song and dance about possible pregnancy. They sell pregnancy test in most shops and supermarkets which are open 24hrs just get a test take it an then think about things if you are pregnant and if your not then there's no point stressing and worrying about it.

Dixiechickonhols · 19/05/2023 15:47

Hope you are as you sound excited. My peri menopause symptoms are exactly same as early pregnancy though. What’s meant to be will be. I’d go for test now. No need to wait.

TheShellBeach · 19/05/2023 15:48

I once delivered a woman who was having her first baby at the age of 42.

They always teach midwives (and tell mothers) that being a primipara at that age is full of pitfalls. Well, it often is.

Anyway, she laboured for three hours, came into labour ward fully dilated, and pushed the baby out while her husband was trying to find a CD to accompany the labour.

Easiest labour ever!
