Two dogs shot in London by police

I’m usually very empathetic and recently even posted on an animal testing post but I just can’t find any compassion in my heart for out of control and dangerous animals at the moment, it’s just getting ridiculous. I obviously feel for the owner who I hope gets some kind of mental support/ counselling.

It’s so confusing as I’m usually so compassionate, I guess having a small child and the number of dog attacks does something to your brain? I hate walking past Bullies with my baby in the pram. Even normal dogs I’m starting to get very hesitant about. For context I usually cry if I step on a silver worm in the bathroom so this is a very strange reaction for me.

Interested to hear what other dog owning/ non dog owning people think. Also the government are going to have to step in at some point right?

Devil dogs and banned breeds should definitely be shot.

Thesharkradar · 18/05/2023 17:44

Why do dog lovers keep lying about this? Why do they seek to mislead?
because they worship/fetishize dogs and are unable to be rational about them

He replied "Shoot them then." and released the lead of one of the dogs which ran towards the police officers
When he said 'shoot them then' his mindset was 'you discharge your weapon and I will discharge mine'
ie he thought there was a chance that his dog would take out the policeman before the policeman could take out his dog.
This man's dogs were purely weapons which he used to perpetrate acts of violence against other people and other people's pets.

This owner is an absolute antisocial idiot.
His past THREE dogs killed someone’s pet, he’s banned and had the same type of dog that he’s absolutely irresponsible with.
He asked for them to be shot- Awful man.
Dogs take after their owners.

Bit weird of you @Emotionalsupportviper to equate off lead dogs to hoodies, I love teenagers they are human. Shooting dogs would never lead to shooting teenagers, that would be murder. Animal control is totally different to killing people and it worries me so many seem not to understand that dogs are nothing like a human child. Ffs.

Thoughts and prayers. Because that's all you will get.

Thank goodness Nitrous Oxide is banned eh ? Although if we are banning things alphabetically then eventually we'll get to XL.

oakleaffy · 18/05/2023 21:43

Is Nitrous oxide banned?
About bloody time!
So sick of seeing those cartridges everywhere, and bits of balloon..Thought I'd not seen as many about recently..Hopefully the ban is the reason.

There does need to be something done about out of control dogs , and indiscriminate breeding/sale of dogs~but have no idea how it could be workable.
We can't even arm ourselves if needs be in UK against aggressive dogs {EG if our own well trained dog gets set upon by a badly trained or aggressive fighting type..
In USA people can carry shock devices that do appear to work to break up fights/attacks.

One woman said she used to carry a gif lemon juice squirter 🍋 to use as a deterrent..But diving down your bag to retrieve a plastic lemon and unscrewing the top to aim at an aggressor's eyes sounds like it would take too long.

Bull breeds by a long margin kill people in USA. The statistics speak for themselves.

WiddlinDiddlin · 19/05/2023 03:54

Pitbull ownership also outstrips ownership of other breeds in the US, they and their crosses are one of the most popular breeds, followed by golden retrievers, chows and labradors.

They're also commonly used as assistance dogs, SAR dogs, scent detection dogs... the list goes on and on.

Another lie from the pit bull advocates.

Pit bulls make up less than 6% of all dogs in America.

https://dogbitelaw.com/vicious-dogs/pit-bulls-facts-and-figures

There are approximately 4.5 million pit bulls in the United States, making up approximately 5.8% of the country's canine population. (Merritt Clifton, Breed Survey 2019: More Puppies Yet Fewer Homes for Pit Bulls, https://www.animals24-7.org/2019/07/09/breed-survey-2019-more-puppies-yet-fewer-homes-for-pit-bulls/.)

And yet they killed over 80% of all Americans who are killed by dogs. (Colleen Lynn, 2015 U.S. Dog Bite Fatalities, at http://www.dogsbite.org/dog-bite-statistics-fatalities-2015.php.)

Nobody that knows anything about the breed would claim they're suitable pets.

And thank heavens for that.

Reading some of the anti-dog rants on here you can see that some dog-haters would be using such weapons against every single animal that went past them on the streets, from toy poodles to gentle lumbering Newfies.

No to weapons - but there needs to be something done about these dangerous breeds, though for the life of me I don't know what or how.

Thank you, Widdlin's post surprised me so I just googled and you're correct; pit bulls are definitely not the most popular.

I have a spaniel and I'm constantly on high alert now when I walk him, in the hope that if I see an American XL Bully (or any mix of bull dog) that I can avoid it. Is there anything you can do if one decides to go for your dog? My dog would definitely lie down and show his tummy. It's heartbreaking to think that our lovely family pets are being attacked by them.

Thelnebriati · 19/05/2023 11:26

What worked for me when we got into trouble with two Staffies is I threw my coat over my dog so that it completely covered him, then scoop up the coat with him inside and turned away. The Staffies sniffed the ground where he had been and I was able to get away from them and their owner.

Another attack from a bull breed
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12100977/Boy-6-asked-mother-dying-SCALPED-dragged-stairs-family-dog.html

Forklift truck driver Vitalijus told The Mirror the family had thought 'long and hard' about getting a dog and described Diesel as 'really soft' and 'jumping around'.
Last Thursday at 7pm, the dog was chewing a bone just before the attack began leading Vick's sister Gabriel, 18, to think 'it was as if he saw Vick as a chew toy'.
After the attack a piece of Vick's scalp ended up on the floor at the home and was almost stepped on by a police officer.
Mother Eugenija, 41, told The Mirror: 'I grabbed Vick and ran to the bedroom, locking the door.
'I was trying to calm him down. I put a towel on his head to stop the bleeding. He saw all the blood and said, "Mummy, am I dying?".
'Then he asked "is [his twin brother] Nick and Gabriel OK.'
She added her son is now having bad dreams where he relives the moment the dog attacked him.
She added: 'He said, "Promise me, we'll have no more dogs in our house".'
It comes as a dog walker who was mauled to death by eight dogs in January is believed to have been killed by her own American Bully XL

Boy was SCALPED and dragged down the stairs by their family dog

Vick Zidko was walking down the stairs in his family home in Doncaster when their dog (pictured), which was bought on Facebook just two weeks prior, clamped its jaws round his head.

Thank you, TheInebriati, I normally have a jacket of some type tied around my waist but wouldn't have thought of that. I hope I'm never in that situation, but it genuinely worries me. And well done on your quick thinking, it must've been frightening.

Thesharkradar · 19/05/2023 12:08

There is a campaign from MP Anna Firth to make dog on dog attacks a specific offense
www.express.co.uk/news/politics/1768222/anna-firth-dog-on-dog-attacks-specific-criminal-offence

Thelnebriati · 19/05/2023 12:19

SidekickSylvia Thank you - I was almost numb with shock, I really thought I was going to lose my dog that day. He was only a small breed though so obviously it would be impractical with a larger dog, or if you have two.

Its a shame but I do think dog on dog attacks need to be made a specific offence now.

2nd dog captured in hoop thing, but escapes hoop and tries to run towards the police officer that is arresting the owner.

Thank you for this bit of info, @ThisOldThang - I had wondered why the second dog was shot if it had been caught in a catch pole, but this explains it.

It looks like the officer leased it from the catchpole so shooting officer could get a clear shot :-(

Megifer · 19/05/2023 12:58

The second dog being released for a clear shot shows that the police had no intention of wanting to check the dogs over. If that was the case why release it when they had it secured? A dog cannot get out of a catchpole.

That poor child.

The mother is still posting that 'it's not the breed', while simultaneously saying she's a model owner - which strongly suggests it is the breed and not the owner.

This seems like a classic bull breed attack:

  • unprovoked
  • without warning.
  • brutal attempt to kill.

I honestly don't know whether a powerful dog can get out of a single catchpole or not - I do know that usually the police have two catchpoles on powerful animals because obviously the dogs fight against it. Normally they use two where possible, manoeuvre the dog into a cage on a police van, release the catchpoles and then the dog settles because it doesn't feel panicked any more.

I'd have thought that a clearer shot could have been achieved it the dog was held comparatively stable. However I haven't watched the footage of the second dog, so I don't know whether it was intentionally released or managed to struggle free by twisting the pole in the officer's hands.

From what I've seen the first dog was legitimately shot, but the second one may be more questionable. There will be a thorough enquiry though, because there always is when a police firearm is discharged in public. (Even in the Met!)

So many of these accounts, or discussions on attacks, refer to the fact that like this mother 'they would never leave the dog alone with a child'. Do they truly not look at that dog and realise that it doesn't actually matter if they're there or not, if the dog wants to kill the child they won't be stopping it any time soon?

I am an out and out dog lover and very used to large and giant breeds - but, in the vast majority of cases, dogs of this type are not responsibly bred, reared and owned. I am very thankful that, as yet, we are not seeing an influx of them in our area, because I would be avoiding them at all costs with my dogs. The thought of one of my dogs being killed in front of me makes me feel physically sick.

Thesharkradar · 19/05/2023 13:44

What is the matter with these people "I never dreamed that the dog would do this"
It's a large powerful predatory animal bred specifically to dismember and kill other large animals.
And you didn't think it would hurt your baby?
