The No 10 inquiry in to Sue Grey wasn't necessary. ACOBA is conducting an investigation (as would be usual in similar circumstances) and makes the recommendation to the PM. Grey has engaged with their investigation to their satisfaction.

It was just an opportunity to keep Grey- Starmer in the headlines - and waste more taxpayers money in the process.

Desperate times for the Tories and their fans.

It has made Dowden look like an even bigger idiot and I didn't think that was possible

Sue Gray insists on following the correct procedure Grin

ACOBA that well known rubber stamping authority that never sees anything wrong with civil servants (do they also report on ministers?) taking up all manner of jobs in businesses they have recently placed contracts with when employed as civil servants.

Yup, do they really want to start an argument about the effectiveness of ACOBA?

#KayBurley - Is it illegal to get on a small boat & cross the Channel?

Tom Tugendhat(Secretary Minister) - "It's not illegal to be a victim of human trafficking"

#KayBurley - Thank you, so it's not illegal.

I had been quite worried about this. If it is illegal to cross the Channel in a small boat then all those people, myself include who sail across each year are breaking the law.

The problem is that wouldn't stand up in a court of law.

If politicians want to (ab)use the media to punt their lies, then it's only "equitable" that the courts be allowed to use that in judgement.

So a business being charged for not submitting paperwork to export to NI should be allowed to play the clip of Boris promising they would not be required to and case dismissed.

Best protest is to ignore, to be honest. Although since walking slowly seems set to be outlawed, I can easily see it becoming a criminal offence to not attend a royal shindig when commanded.

If we cared about English, rather than French traditions, we'd allow the Witan to elect the monarch. Or remove them if they were crap. Funny that never gets taught in our glorious history.

RafaistheKingofClay · 03/05/2023 17:04

Tugenhat presumably learning from Cleverly’s cock up where he tried not to answer the same question from Burley. Seeming didn’t want to admit that it was legal for them to cross so tired to just lie and thought better of it.

Says a lot about the standard of U.K. journalism at the moment that I was impressed Burley didn’t let him get away with the lie and challenged him on it.

Didn’t someone go on GB news and say that anyone who might protest should be arrested before the coronation.

You would have to watch GB News to know if that was the case or not. And that issue reminds me of a (much missed) P J O Rourke zinger on the radio years ago when someone asked him where all the opposition was some liberal lefty protest that day

"I guess we have jobs"

Yes some minor royal said that, Victoria Hervey. She apparently has form

Try and keep a straight face every one. Fresh from the success of maths without having any maths teachers, the government are launching a new plan to stop fraudsters.

Hang on. are the saying that they are going to stop frauds like people making up suprious benefits of political policies like Brexit, then flogging it to people and not admitting it was a fraud?
Or to stop frauds like buying useless products from the mates of ministers because they are the mates of ministers?
Or to stop frauds like the budget enriching the company the PMs wife owns for no apparently obvious reason?

Notonthestairs · 03/05/2023 17:55

I didn't think fraud counted as a crime anymore...

Probably only specific and limited frauds over a few billion pounds don't count.

RafaistheKingofClay · 03/05/2023 17:44

So he set up an internal group to directly lobby the Government regarding regulatory bodies - and was paid for it by an external group (rather than an individual client) and that's within the rules?
WTF?
They sure do know their way around the loopholes.

keep up. (Although you probably weren’t supposed to remember that). That was a few weeks ago. Then it wasn’t a crime. Now it’s important.

I thought crime had ceased to exist since we had 20,000 and eleventy new police offices.

Probably only specific and limited frauds over a few billion pounds don't count.

And that weren't reasonable to commit.
