The Netherlands also always has coalition governments, as does Belgium - and Belgium managed to run perfectly well without a government in place for almost 2 years. Coalitions temper extreme positions. Coalitions get things done. Coalitions bring compromise. It really is a no brainer.

RafaistheKingofClay · 29/04/2023 21:35

Also not helped by the fact that it was a Tory leaflet that had you don’t need ID on it and anyone who just binned it won’t have seen that bit.

tobee · 29/04/2023 21:49

Obviously there are many good examples of coalition governments in many countries over the decades but of course we don't know of U.K. will follow hose examples.

It's a bit like when I discuss how I want to get rid of our hereditary monarchy but want the replacement to be excellent. I understand the reaction "just give us a republic now!" emotional response.

Luckily FPTP has produced a series of stable functioning governments in the past several years to there really is no compelling argument to make a change.

Guys, we’ve destroyed British politics.

Guys, we’ve destroyed British politics.

I am not sure the Pot Plant King of the World needed any help demolishing his character.

itsgettingweird · 30/04/2023 06:45

SerendipityJane · 29/04/2023 21:05

I know that FPTP is logical and appealing in many ways. But I also don't necessarily fancy governments that have to rely on coalitions of all kinds of dodgy stripes. That can break apart easily and need many general elections.

To be fair, the LibDems did make the coalition formal and transparent. But as we learned, the UK (or England ?) isn't yet ready for gown up politics.

Incidentally, the news on the grapevine (for those who like irony) is the voter ID scheme is actually set to punish the Torys more than Labour. A hell of a lot of older Tory voters don't have the necessary ID and don't see why they need it. Apparently these ID laws aren't aimed at them, so they don't need to do much. A fact which hasn't been allowed to be recorded in the sham "analysis" of the scheme, because the instigators only want positive stories.

Be prepared for a slew of Daily Mail sadface stories of people who were born an bred here being turned away because they didn't think the law meant them.

I heard a very amusing interview with Jenrick BBC R4 on Friday. (Any questions)

He was asked why older people can use a bus pass but students couldn't use railcards.

His answer was that studies showed many students also had alternative ID.

So he was asked if they didn't why couldn't they use the same ID as over 65's.

Apparently because they can get other ID.

So can the over 65's it was pointed out.

Yes but studies show students often already have alternative ID.

He's sooooooo tone deaf to the actual point it's embarrassing he's a minister for this country. And yet people still can't see the issue with this bunch of Tory's even when they spell out the problem with them to you on radio!

Zonder · 30/04/2023 08:19

I heard that too @itsgettingweird - one of many irritating things he said. But the one that got my dh shouting at the radio was when he talked about Temple Mead in Bristol and what he did there as housing minister. You'd expect him to know it's Temple Meads if he was that involved 😆

The prospect of coalitions is what makes me really support FPTP. The libdem Tory one was a disaster but that's because it didn't come from a FPTP result where the outcome would have been different.

Right, that's going on my CV.

Piggywaspushed · 30/04/2023 09:40

I've watched Borgen. All they do in coalitions is bicker and appease each other. I could not bear the thought of the Far Right having nay real power at all, tbh. Italy puts me off - it's easy to look to good examples but there are also chaotic ones.

DuncinToffee · 30/04/2023 09:49

Sunak met with Italy's prime minister Giorgia Meloni and said his and Meloni's values are "very aligned".

Florida's DeSantis is endorsing Badenoch

Tory party seems very happy with far right wing support.

His team says financial facility of up to £800k underwritten by Sam Blyth was provided by an unspecified British bank

They do not intend to go further in discussing personal finances

Yes, that's my fear. In a coalition we couldn't get rid of them.

Are you describing the current Tory government?

Could you describe to me how we can get rid of the far right government we have at the moment, which most people did not vote for?

itsgettingweird · 30/04/2023 10:16

If anyones board have a look at Bravermans FB page.

Her last 2 posts have been overtaken by some far right nutter who doesn't actually add any point to the table - just spouts a load of tosh calling everyone trolls.

I think she thinks she's being clever. But it does Bravermans reputation no favours having people like her as supporters 🤷‍♀️🫣

itsgettingweird · 30/04/2023 10:16

Bored even!

No. I'm all out of plans...I fear the Revolution may not happen.

pointythings · 30/04/2023 10:22

Thing is, the Tory Party is the far right already. And the votes of all those who didn't vote for them just didn't count. At least with PR, if you get a far right government you know that it's democratically elected. You don't have to like it, but it's democratic and has a mandate.

Article yesterday on BBC website [which I now can't find] rather brutally ascribed Johnson's 'overspending' as mainly due to his ''multi-million divorce settlement with Marina Wheeler'' and some coy expression which related to maintainance for prior children

In addition to all the interior decorating, endless holidays, nannies etc etc

Blossomtoes · 30/04/2023 10:52

Poor little thing. Given that Wheeler was the person who earned all the money in that marriage and put up with him for 25 years, it’s only right and just that she walked away with the multiple millions. She should get a medal as well.

MumofTwins234 · 30/04/2023 11:16

Surely most of Johnson's kids are adults now though, how many is he paying maintenance for? 1?

onirgellep · 30/04/2023 11:24

IDK there are a couple ?mid-teens that are semi public knowledge and his youngest with MW is about 23
