"I think there is a corollary to be made that any sufficiently posh matey moving of large sums of money appear indistinguishable to money laundering and tax evasion to us plebs. "

Yep.

Mad, Bad and dangerous to lend to.

Wonder just who that credit facility was with - and whether it was deliberately structured so that it didn't need to be declared (I'll bet £800,000 it was).

Russian Oligarch?

Notonthestairs · 28/04/2023 18:59

Well it definitely wasn't a high street bank Grin

newnamethanks · 28/04/2023 19:10

Hope it wasn't from a Sunak family firm. I'm absolutely sure that it was not.

newnamethanks · 28/04/2023 19:11

Are loans taxable as income? Surely not?

In theory, no. In practice you need a fucktonne of paperwork to keep HMRC away. Such as terms, repayment schedule etc. Especially if there is a suspicion that the "loan" was actually part of a transaction (which is taxable).

Otherwise the world plus it's dog would be "loaning" money to the chap that happened to fix your car.

The thing is, the system is already massively skewed to allow the Tory elite to evade tax quite properly. The fact they still get caught trying to grift an extra dollar is a testament to their stomach churning greed.

Notonthestairs · 28/04/2023 19:56

Totally off topic and you've all probably read it already but I thought this long ish thread by John Burn-Murdoch is really interesting and highlights reasons why NHS staff are leaving.

"NEW: we need to talk about NHS staff retention.

At a time when Britain’s healthcare system is acutely short of workers, 1 in 7 UK-trained doctors are practising overseas. No other developed country is like this, which immediately tells you there’s a problem.

Let’s dig deeper:"

Thank you Serendipity. I thought there'd be a money saver aspect to it in some way.

I have seen rumours on twitter yes I know that Johnson is close to bankruptcy (financial)

OP posts:
Thesharkradar · 28/04/2023 21:41

close to bankruptcy?? but what about all the golden opportunities to make large sums of money that he has as an ex prime minister?
If he's so profligate and out of control what was he doing in high office?

Being profligate and out of control, like a shopping trolley with dodgy wheels?

I've seen the same. It doesn't quite square with the £5 million he's supposedly made since leaving Number 10.
I wouldn't be surprised if he had been close to bankruptcy in the past. He has a large family, doesn't like being unpopular and minimal self control.

DuncinToffee · 29/04/2023 09:28

Don’t go near Boris Johnson. Your reputation might depend on it.

Richard Sharp — who resigned as BBC chairman today — is far from the first figure who has taken a disastrous hit after personal dealings with Johnson.

In fact... here's a list:

Boris’ bodycount: BBC chief Richard Sharp is just the latest Johnson casualty

From David Cameron to Richard Sharp, proximity with Boris Johnson can be dangerous.

Yes I agree.

However the £800,000 loan was used by Johnson to finance lifestyle/help repay loans relating to wallpaper-gate so who knows how many more outstanding loans need repaying.

But it's only a rumour

I am reminded of an acquaintance of Aleister Crowley who was libelled in the press. The case was thrown out when they judge decreed that anyone who knew Crowley had no reputation to lose.

{Admittedly apocryphal. Although now I type the name, I can see Crowley and Johnson getting on like a house on fire. I wonder if there is some sort of Satanic cult at the heart of the Tory party ? It's not too much of a stretch to see them all cowled and mumbling around a pentagram ...)

Few more observations on Sharp story & Johnson £800k loan:

- We were told that it was used by Johnson to finance lifestyle/help repay loans relating to wallpaper-gate. Not denied by team Johnson

- Blyth’s involvement clearly risked a conflict (British council)

And yet…

I can see that they have a lot in common @SerendipityJane but surely both would want to be top dog, there would be power struggles...Crowley would summon up demons 👿😈
I think Johnson is someone who likes to ruin people, runs with them to the edge of the cliff stopping just in time to watch them plunge to their death
Maybe his centre of gravity has shifted and he'll end up going over the edge too this time 🤷

@RafaistheKingofClay 13 years? They way this lot have fucked everything up I would hope they would be out for a generation

I’m hoping for a change of electoral system and them never having a majority tbh but Starmer seems to have pissed all over my chips on that one.

In other news I had a government rage dream last night. Woke up really pissed off with them breaking everything. The decade in Tory might not be the best bedtime reading.

pointythings · 29/04/2023 17:48

@RafaistheKingofClay they just never learn. They cling to FPTP to put themselves in power, then the Tories get in again and they start talking about PR, until the polls swing in their favour. It's pathetic.

RafaistheKingofClay · 29/04/2023 17:54

They seem to insist on choosing to have a majority government once in a blue moon rather than be in a coalition all the time. The electorate is mainly left leaning. There’s no reason for the Tories to ever have sole power. It’s infuriating.

Made me laugh when Barclay was going on about the RCN vote only representing a minority of nurses. Bit rich from a party that didn’t even get a majority of votes from the people that bothered to vote and keeps banging on about their democratic mandate.

Its the will of the people.

tobee · 29/04/2023 20:55

I know that FPTP is logical and appealing in many ways. But I also don't necessarily fancy governments that have to rely on coalitions of all kinds of dodgy stripes. That can break apart easily and need many general elections.

I don't know what the solution is. Should it be voted on again? Does the general electorate have the capacity, the interest to understand? Do we trust campaigns to present the facts properly on either side in the run up to a vote?

But then the idea of the Tory party being gone forever is very tempting. Maybe that's too simplistic?

BringBackCoffeeCreams · 29/04/2023 20:59

We always have coalition governments here in Sweden and we're doing ok. The downside is that I don't have the foggiest who to write to when I want to express my outrage at something.

SerendipityJane · 29/04/2023 21:05

To be fair, the LibDems did make the coalition formal and transparent. But as we learned, the UK (or England ?) isn't yet ready for gown up politics.

Incidentally, the news on the grapevine (for those who like irony) is the voter ID scheme is actually set to punish the Torys more than Labour. A hell of a lot of older Tory voters don't have the necessary ID and don't see why they need it. Apparently these ID laws aren't aimed at them, so they don't need to do much. A fact which hasn't been allowed to be recorded in the sham "analysis" of the scheme, because the instigators only want positive stories.

Be prepared for a slew of Daily Mail sadface stories of people who were born an bred here being turned away because they didn't think the law meant them.
