"Local elections mean nothing. It's essentially an election where people will make a lot for protest votes. Come GE, the supporters will flock back from the LD and the Greens."

Excellent. Let's have a GE. June ok?

I'm up for that!
.
How lucky for Sunak we have a Coronation today. He can go to ground until probably tuesday.. and come up with a spin on the truly dreadful result for the Tories.

BBC headlines this morning
"Local elections 2023: Labour eyes power after crushing Tory losses"

borntobequiet · 06/05/2023 08:24

Emotionalstorm · 06/05/2023 08:20

How about most of the press apart from rags like the Guardian and the FT.

Strange to refer to two of our most respected broadsheets as “rags”. But you do you.

And the Telegraph isn't a rag? It officially is now, you know!

I've just put the BBC headlines there on my previous post

Here is Sky...
"Labour now largest party of local government and Conservatives lose over 1,000 seats"

Here is Financial Times
"Conservatives suffer steep losses in English local elections"

ITV..
"Disastrous local elections for Tories as Starmer 'on course' to become PM"

That'll do for now.

The TV coverage on the BBC was much more favourable yesterday for our government.

The TV coverage on the BBC was much more favourable yesterday for our government.

Well, it would be, for reasons detailed above.
Just out of interest - what newspapers would you classify as not rags? The Mail? The Express?

Of course. That is no surprise. I like to watch a lot of different news channels, and my opinion is based on all the diferent news outlets I look at so I can take a broad view.

I am really not sure what your point is?

I read the Telegraph and Reuters.

Notonthestairs · 06/05/2023 08:37

So lets have a General Election.

I still don't believe labour will get a majority at the GE. As I said, people vote differently at a local election vs at a GE. The LDs always underperform at the GE. My prediction is that the conservatives will win with a small majority or worst case scenario they form a coalition government with another party.

redavocado · 06/05/2023 08:43

Can you see another party being willing to form a coalition government with the tories? After how that turned out for the LDs? And after the last 13 years?

OK... is that your point? That's fine, your opinion.

There are very many people who will be working extremely hard to make your prediction wrong.

Enjoy the wishful thinking. Historically, low turnout has always favoured the Tories. Turnout was very low this year and still they took a battering. Turnout tends to be considerably higher in General Elections.

Recent byelections have also shown an electorate fed up with the Tories - remind me, how did those byelections go? I understand you're a staunch Tory devotee who will only change their vote because of the new animal testing legislation (because people don't matter, especially poor ones), but you're on a hiding to nowhere here.

Well they were going to run out of ways to make over 1000 lost seats seem credible at some point.

Even with the experience they and the Tory's have at scraping the barrel it will always eventually - run dry!

He's marched for everything, Black Lives Matter, Kill the Bill, Reclaim the streets, Roe v Wade, Ban Donald Trump from visiting. He redesigned the tram network for our city when he was 14 & his plans became part of the Green Party manifesto for the City. He has been involved with the Green Party since he was 13 & served on their Transport committee since he was 14, he is the official Transport guru, it has turned what is part of his autism in to something that is transforming our city. From a 3 year old who was obsessed with buses who turned in to a 14 year old obsessed with trains it has served him well.

Aww. I love this. He sounds amazing nat

AdamRyan · 06/05/2023 09:16

So. Is the Johnson report going to be published this week do we think? 🍿

The Times suggested that after the publication of the Anthony Seldon book the Committee might be keen to talk to Simon Case again. He made some comments about how difficult it was to work with somebody who lies all the time...
So I think June.
But I am hoping it will be a bit quicker than that.

Exactly, that’s sheer lunacy. Any coalition would be every party except the Tories.

pointythings · 06/05/2023 09:43

A Labour/LD coalition might be a good outcome. The LDs want PR and closer ties with the EU. It would give the government a mandate to work towards those things and legitimise that.

I think we're going to end up with a substantial Labour majority, though. The Tories would need to deliver improvements in living standards, a drop in inflation and a prolonged period without sleaze and corruption to have a chance. The party is fractured and ungoverneable. I don't see it happening, they need a spell in the wilderness.

Judging by my area (didn't vote) and the comments section of the newspaper, plus random people I talk to, our current, self serving conservative MP will be out on her arse.

I like to vote for the person I think is best for the job, regardless of which party they stand for. She has been so desperate to be in the gang, she hasn't put her constituents first and she has by default allowed this crap government to limp along. Poor leadership, poor decision making skills and poor judgement. If I have to knock on every bloody door in our constituency to remind people, then I will.

20 years might be enough time for me to forget,I suspect I'll need longer. So will the families of those who died while Johnson and Sunak happily partied through, so much so they received fpns. Not to ention Sunaks second one for thinking the laws on seat belts didn't apply.

The tories are done.

I was pondering this last night whilst wondering if the LD huge gains were related to them being pro EU.

I'd actually be interested in another referendum re being in the EU. Just for interests sake if nothing else.

pointythings · 06/05/2023 10:37

Meanwhile on a different topic, the thread on the protests at the Coronation is full of very scary people.

countrygirl99 · 06/05/2023 10:49

Just looked at that. Scarey indeed. Noy a surprise to people who have been watching this government closely which makes it even scarier.

In 1997, just before the Blair landslide (majority of 179) a friend of mine said “I think the Conservatives will just swing it”.
Now Starmer ain’t no Blair, but I think you’re as wrong as was my friend.
