Sunak seems to be hiding since this morning

He’s probably weeping and rocking in a corner somewhere.

That’s not desperation, it’s denial. They’ve lost 1061 councillors now.

And Hands has lost the plot. It is absolutely hilarious.

Piggywaspushed · 05/05/2023 22:52

Bedford has a Tory Mayor. I'm apoplectic.

Emotionalstorm · 06/05/2023 01:34

I still think labour have done very badly and this was a bad night for them. Most of the BBC presenters and the Telegraph think so too.

Maybe @Nat6999s DS was one of the young teenagers that gave me hope on the marches in 2017 ?

He's marched for everything, Black Lives Matter, Kill the Bill, Reclaim the streets, Roe v Wade, Ban Donald Trump from visiting. He redesigned the tram network for our city when he was 14 & his plans became part of the Green Party manifesto for the City. He has been involved with the Green Party since he was 13 & served on their Transport committee since he was 14, he is the official Transport guru, it has turned what is part of his autism in to something that is transforming our city. From a 3 year old who was obsessed with buses who turned in to a 14 year old obsessed with trains it has served him well.

I think the rail issue swung it. Let's see if he can walk the walk. He won't have the influence the single issue voters think he has.

You must be SO proud of your wonderful son.

(I was on a couple of those marches with my DCs!)

If Labour have done badly how would you rate thr Conservative performance?

The live coverage of the BBC implies otherwise and also the front page of the telegraph.

Local elections mean nothing. It's essentially an election where people will make a lot for protest votes. Come GE, the supporters will flock back from the LD and the Greens.

countrygirl99 · 06/05/2023 06:03

I'm sure the Conservatives would be saying exactly the opposite if they had gained seats. It still stands that if gaining hundreds of seats is a poor performance losing hundreds must be abysmal.

Are they watching an election in another country?

Tory's lost over 1000 seats.

Labour gained more than half of them and the LD/greens gained the rest.

The country are clearly showing that they don't want this far right wing party leading us. Their racist rhetoric is backfiring. We don't want it.

And I think Lib Dem's have gained massively because they are pro EU and Brexit has been the predicted shit show and people are showing they aren't happy with it.

You have a very subtle sense of humour, don’t you?

Just a little local mid term blues, nothing unexpected or to be worried about.

Even when I throw in a But Jeremy Corbyn or Boris knows what a woman is for, they lap it up.
I blame whover suggested a celebratory drink.

Piggywaspushed · 06/05/2023 07:40

I've just been reminded re our Tory mayor that all previous votes have been STVs. The Tory government changed mayoral votes to FPTP Hey presto - Tory mayor. More people voted not Tory than for the winner. The LD, wo has been mayor for 14 years, lost by 100 votes.

Facebook confirms two reasons - the highly controversial EW rail link (LD mayor favoured the northern route through many fields near Tory villages and through the land belonging to the new Tory mayor...) and others favoured a southern route. This was the nail in his coffin. The northern route also compulsorily purchases some houses. The southern route would go near other villages- mine included-though, so God knows.

The other reason - too many leaflets from the LD mayor. 'Too much information, so I voted Tory'. Honestly, you couldn't make it up. Well jgw could.

Of course! It's the BBC and the Telegraph, say no more. Have a look around elsewhere maybe?

I don’t think you needed the celebratory drink as encouragement.

Excellent. Let's have a GE. June ok?

Notonthestairs · 06/05/2023 08:17

"The live coverage of the BBC implies otherwise and also the front page of the telegraph."

The BBC where the ex leader of Hammersmith & Fulham Conservatives Tim Davie is Director General and the Chairman arranged off the books bank loans for the then PM. Not forgetting Robbie Gibb is on the board - ex Tory government advisor and brother to a Tory MP Nick Gibb.
It's not like they would want partisan coverage would they?

The Telegraph is of course staunchly neutral owned as it is by huge supporters of Truss the non dom billionaire Barclays.

Oh I can't be bothered. The Conservatives exceeded their worst case scenario and that's enough.

How about most of the press apart from rags like the Guardian and the FT.
