"One of the Tories on my local news saying he's desperately sad that seats have been lost 'for national reasons'"

Tory members (which presumably will include councillors) voted for Truss! They can't disassociate from her now!

itsgettingweird · 05/05/2023 07:18

They saw this economic mayhem whilst in opposition as a political opportunity and managed to convince the electorate that, as they said at the time – “We can’t go on like this.”

Thirteen years later and the Tories have solved none of the problems that existed. We still have a housing crisis and a social care crisis. But now we have many more problems too – as a direct result of their reign. In fact, overall, it’s been an unmitigated disaster.

Britain is now more divided than ever. The four nations that make up the United Kingdom are now under serious threat. We are the only country in the world with a physical internal border. Another terrible political crisis awaits us in the road ahead.

And as the treasury takes more and more of our money away from us – often attacking pension savings and its tax breaks to encourage us to look after ourselves – it will only get worse.

For millions of Millennials – home ownership is a lost dream in something called the rent trap. For them, the pensions time bomb goes off when they stop work and still have to pay rent for the rest of their lives. Inheritances will have been gobbled up by private care costs of their parents.

Surely it is time to see off the charlatans, the fraudsters and political hustlers. If anyone claims they love this country, they should do their duty. Voting Tory is the exact opposite of this because the actions of this government tell us that they are in it for themselves and their donors – not you, not me, or our communities, prospects or the future of the next generation.

I've C and P this from Bravermans FB page from a response on her campaign articles. I just thought it was spot on.

Notonthestairs · 05/05/2023 07:19

I see what you mean Itsgettingweird. Although I think (via my Telegraph reading Dad) that the Telegraph would still love to bring back Johnson. Bad results for Sunak adds fuel to that fire.

On the subject of the Braverman, I think we saw the mess the Tory party is in locally with the laughable turnout for the vote to determine who would be the Tory candidate in the rejoin seat in her area at the next GE. From memory just over 100 people voted. You aren't going to have a very effective campaign with that few people on the ground.

Notonthestairs · 05/05/2023 07:22

The pincer movement. Lab squeezing in Brexit facing Red Wall, LDs in the traditional Tory shires. Was told anecdotally y’day couple MPs that in W Mids bit of chat about wanting Johnson back. I also had this in Stockton last wk. Emerging Q of day, just who will vote for Sunak?

Roussette · 05/05/2023 07:24

itsgettingweird that post is spot on.

Bath & NE somerset (Mogg's constituency) have LDs winning through as councillors for the first time to replace Tory ones, and by a big margin.
That is good news

LDs claiming victory in Windsor & Maidenhead. 😁

I’m wondering at what point the ‘but tactical voting’ complaints from the Tories start.

Notonthestairs · 05/05/2023 07:42

Greg Hands sent out to say they predicted a 1000 seat loss.
Nope.
It was the far end of a range of possible outcomes.
Not a prediction.

RafaistheKingofClay · 05/05/2023 07:44

This is going to be really funny if they lose more than 1000 seats.

Roussette · 05/05/2023 07:45

Greg Hands on breakfast news hahahahaha. Desperation right in front my face. Love the tactic of predicting 1,000 so they did well 🤣

7:41AM
Lord Barwell: Rishi Sunak has 'hell of a job' ahead of him to 'close the gap'
Lord Barwell, the former Tory MP and Downing Street chief of staff to Theresa May, told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme that Rishi Sunak has a "hell of a job" ahead of him as he reacted to the bruising results for the Conservative Party.
He said: "I think the problem is not actually the current Government. The problem is the damage that Boris Johnson and Liz Truss did to the Conservative brand."
Lord Barwell said No10 "will not be surprised" by these results: "If you look at the national polls, the Conservatives are still a long way behind, they are in serious political difficulty. And the gap has narrowed since Rishi Sunak took over.
"If you ask the question who makes the best Prime Minister, Sunak is pretty competitive with Starmer."
He added: "The problem is not Sunak, he’s improving the situation. But he started miles behind and he’s got a hell of a job to do to try to close the gap."

Still blaming Truss and Johnson. "It's not the brand" 🙄

newnamethanks · 05/05/2023 07:46

Windsor & Maidenhead! Trembling in the shires. Good.

Is Lord Barwell unaware that the appearance of people like Lord Barwell in the House of Lords, who have done nothing to earn that place, might be part of the problem.
Surely his very appearance on the radio this morning, just goes to emphasise the problems the Tories have created for themselves and more importantly the country.

Notonthestairs · 05/05/2023 07:51

And the Times is straight in with an article claiming the Tory right and Johnson supporters (JRM, Dorries, Frost, Cruddas etc) are poised to seize control of the party.
Are they forgetting that is the exact same wing of the party that supported Truss? Or that maintain Johnson is a fit person to lead the country.

One half of the party blaming Truss Johnson legacy.
The other half claiming Truss Johnson are the way forward.

RafaistheKingofClay · 05/05/2023 07:54

LDs won 22 of the Windsor and Maidenhead seats a gain of 13 seats. Tories lost 16 seats, leaving them with 7.

More of this please.

Perhaps he should try getting the letter out.

jgw1 · 05/05/2023 08:07

I think the Tories are making a comeback.
When I woke up they had lost 1/3 of the seats that they previously held that had been declared.
Now they have only lost 32.8% of the declared seats that they previously held.

Is Putin distracted by other things and so not able to support the Tories as much as in the past?
