Statement from Electoral Commission

https://www.electoralcommission.org.uk/media-centre/post-poll-statement-may-2023

We already know from our research that the ID requirement posed a greater challenge for some groups in society, and that some people were regrettably unable to vote today as a result. It will be essential to understand the extent of this impact, and the reasons behind it, before a final view can be taken on how the policy has worked in practice and what can be learnt for future elections.

I don't know how independent the Electoral Commission can be considered. I know their hands have been tied by the Conservatives.

DuncinToffee · 04/05/2023 23:06

Very first result is in, Chester-le-Street East
Labour gain from Conservatives

Notonthestairs · 04/05/2023 23:17

Britain Elects @ BritainElects is a good source for results

Looking good so far although far too early to tell.

voter turnout seems to be right down though.

Piggywaspushed · 05/05/2023 05:57

Stoke has gone to Labour. Delightful.

RafaistheKingofClay · 05/05/2023 06:40

As has Plymouth.

Seats falling everywhere even where labour are only making small gains.Lib dems doing well which is good news for the blue wall in the south.

Roussette · 05/05/2023 06:48

LD have increased their seats in the two areas close to me. Labour losing. I didn't vote so it's just the adjacent Councils to me.
All good

I read that it will take until this afternoon to get a clearer picture

itsgettingweird · 05/05/2023 06:48

State of play at 6.42am
The results are now in from 51 of the 230 local authorities where elections have been held.
The Tories have lost control of five councils, while Labour has gained two.
The Conservatives have lost 134 seats, with Labour gaining 107. Meanwhile, the Liberal Democrats have gained 42 and the Greens have gained nine.

Nearly a quarter of the way through.

Labour, LD and greens gained more seats than the Tories have lost.

Labour gaining councils but more importantly Tory's have lost more.

Will be very interesting once all the results are in because with so many LAs still to declare we don't know if they've counted the ones they expected to lose first? So that when things improve they can spin it with "gained!" And "held!" And hope people remember that and not all the losses!

If anyone gets the results for south can you post here?

I thought I had read that the expectation was that some of the more Blue areas would be counted first so it wouldn't look too bad for the Tories in the morning, but would get worse later.

We shall see.

Thus far the Tories have lost 1/3 of the seats that they were previously holding that have been counted.

Roussette · 05/05/2023 06:58

One of the Tories on my local news saying he's desperately sad that seats have been lost 'for national reasons'

You don't say!

RafaistheKingofClay · 05/05/2023 07:02

BBC live feed tentatively suggesting that Tories may have lost more than 1000 seats. They might need to up their expectation management game.

Yes I read a Tory minister said that too. They said people don't really vote for local reasons - they vote nationally and that could show a worrying trend.

itsgettingweird · 05/05/2023 07:05

Gullis (I think it was) basically said people are voting on what happened at the end of 2022. Ie it's Truss' fault and they'll soon realise Sunak is a strong leader and change their minds. Ignoring the fact voting shows in 6 months he hasn't yet done that.

That’s what I’d read somewhere. Thinking May have been on the link about what time to expect results posted earlier. There is a sort of general sense on my Twitter feed that so far Tories are doing worse than predicted.

In the words of Mandy Rice Davies... "well, he would say that, wouldn't he"

Funny... that was a Tory scandal too, very apt!

Saucery · 05/05/2023 07:08

Well, they would say that, wouldn’t they? To coin a phrase.
If your local Councillor demonstrates the same attributes as those shown in Parliament then they’ll be voted out in many cases. Self-reflection isn’t really a Thing for Tory Parish councillors, ime.

Saucery · 05/05/2023 07:08

Lol at X-post.

RafaistheKingofClay · 05/05/2023 07:09

Gullis is an idiot. Perhaps he’s clinging on to hope he won’t lose his seat in the next election.

Roussette · 05/05/2023 07:09

Gullis is a truly awful man. In so many ways. I cannot wait for him to be ousted. Along with many others.

itsgettingweird · 05/05/2023 07:13

Sorry it's the telegraph!!!

My (weird!) theory was it's better to follow a right wing paper whilst watching the losses because it would give some more interesting commentary 🫣🤣
