MN oldies, what do you wish HQ would do differently?

bibbitybobbityyhat · 18/04/2023 20:38

I'm not putting this in site stuff because I'm not addressing it to HQ, I'm addressing it to people who've used the site for a few years. By oldies I mean people who've been around for a bit - maybe a couple of years?

For me - it's still that they will NOT housekeep AIBU so that the site doesn't look like nothing but AIBU for everything.

Some people post really serious stuff in AIBU (paraphrasing but AIBU to be upset at this devastating cancer diagnosis/violent relationship/being made homeless/dire poverty/dog poo on the streets/state of the NHS/genocide in x country/shall I abort or not) etc. There is nothing unreasonable about what they are posting.

I've moaned about it for years and years and, yes, I'm still here - there aren't many alternatives and I enjoy the food, travel, S&B, TV, property and chat boards and have received and given loads of useful info over the years. But I probably missed a lot because threads on those topics were posted in AIBU.

And also, I think outside of Mumsnet it makes us a bit of a laughing stock.

So that's my biggest petty gripe. What is yours?

Bonus 100 points for every "if you don't like it you can fuck off" post.

I never left. Nor banned

How strange then, as I definitely remember something happening with you as you'd stopped posting.

TrombonesAreNotBones · 20/04/2023 16:39

Cod was outed and some posting history was removed, perhaps that is what you were remembering?

But she never left and pops up, as now, to poke fun and laugh about how ridiculous we were back in the day. We made Justine list chat as _chat so that it would come bottom in the list of topics, for example. Awful! But good times, too.

SwedishEdith · 20/04/2023 18:06

I want to know who the Big White Arse was now.

Oblomov23 · 20/04/2023 18:20

I feel old. Things get on my nerves, but I dint know what to change: like when I've posted something personal on a thread then it gets deleted, because op doesn't like the replies.

Def was a regular. I knew her. Terrible memory

I'd have guessed someone like PPH 😄

Gosh. Def not.

Decorhate · 20/04/2023 19:36

This thread has got me thinking about oldies who are probably not around any more. There was the woman (who lived not too far from me) whose husband had a heart transplant. I hope it worked out for him. Anyone else remember them?

Peter? And she and her sister were both Mumsnetters.

RedRobyn2021 · 20/04/2023 20:28

My only complaint is if someone tags you in a thread there is no notification on the app, you're just sent an email and I barely ever check those. It's really old fashioned tbh.

RedRobyn2021 · 20/04/2023 20:28

Also can't believe I'd be considered an old timer having used mumsnet for the last 3 years, I still feel new!

SauvignonBlanche · 20/04/2023 20:38

I’ve been on since 2007 and had this username since 2010.

I think MNHQ mostly do I great job but I do find it wearing the amount of crap that ends up on AIBU.

The amount of ads is a bit boring and I do:miss not ‘recognising’ posters as much.

Debate is less intelligent and irreverent these days.

Internationalwomendayheadquarters · 20/04/2023 20:39

I’d like to see a few changes:

  • a like button
  • my own colour different to the OP’s colour when I post
  • More wit, warmth and humour.

There are still some utterly fabulous and wise women on here, and it’s why I keep coming back.

JaneJeffer · 20/04/2023 20:56

It already is

Me too but I actually think that's true across real life now also Sad

Agree with this

TrombonesAreNotBones · 21/04/2023 02:02

I have just remembered who the BWA was.

I do think the site has dumbed down and just miss the wit, humour and incorrectness of years gone by, people are now far more serious and worthy plus seem to be more aggrieved by life and everything in it.
I used to regularly end up giggling away while reading random threads which I rarely do now

A couple of fabulous MN curses in the past day, shows me that MN is only as good as the posters on it:

I hope he steps on a plug

Lets hope his next shit's a hedgehog

and

My NDN knocked on my door (bristle, bristle) and I didn't know what they wanted.
Yes that's how doors work. Someone knocks on the door, you answer it and you start talking.

its golden - I found myself giggling inanely for hours, and when I told DH we were both in a pleat, so maximum value-add.

HRTQueen · 21/04/2023 08:20

I mostly like it how it is

i think it’s not as cliquey as it was but you will always attract bullies on an open forum.

I would like the threads that bring out those that have very nasty opinions and enjoy being spiteful to be monitored better or zapped sooner but they often attract a lot of posts which in turn means more revenue for MN. A few years ago white privilege got many very vocal and the racists came out not that long ago there seemed to be a number of threads along the lines of is this fair the family next door have a disabled child and they are allowed to …. some very nasty posts that had no reason to stand were allowed to until I guess MN received a number of posters reporting the thread

there have been some very funny posters and still are I don’t think it’s hugely changed just more numbers on here now and less sneering about Netmums which has always been tiresome

I agree OP, and I'm fairly sure I have posted similar on site stuff in the past.

Lumping everything into AIBU is not good. I sometimes report threads that should be elsewhere but nothing happens. It would make the quieter parts of the site livelier and posters more likely to get actual advice they are looking for.

FloatersintheHotTub · 21/04/2023 21:11

Thank you JaneJeffer

CurlewKate · 22/04/2023 11:36

Oh, does anyone remember going on an "outing@ to Mumsnet in another country? I've forgotten the details, but it was such fun!
