New Harry Potter TV adaptation: What details are you hoping get included?

Things that weren't in the film adaptations, either due to technology not being available to show it on film, budget, or cutting due to run time.

Little detail: in the Philosopher's Stone, one of the ways the Hogwarts letters are delivered to the Dursley house is rolled up inside a dozen eggs, passed through the window to Aunt Petunia (as the door is already nailed shut). I would love to see Aunt Petunia cracking open eggs and finding a Hogwarts letter inside each one.

Big detail: The whole scene in which the Weasley family attempt to come get Harry from Privet Drive ahead of the Quidditch World Cup, by connecting their fireplace to the Floo network, then can't get out as it's an electric fire, end up blasting half the living room apart and Fred & George "accidentally" let Dudley eat a Ton Tongue Toffee.

What's yours? One big detail and one little detail allowed each!

@SirSamVimesCityWatch oh the insidious Watson and Radcliffe won't get actually involved, but will definitely dine out and try and up their sleb status on whyyyy they are so clearly much better than JK at anything Potterwise with all the sycophantic misogynists.

Great thread! Almost as much fun as a Terry Pratchett casting thread 😁

Darn, Emma Thompson would be a great McGonagall.

Yes to Asa Butterfield as James, too. I reckon quite a few of the Sex Education crew could be involved.

washrinse · 16/04/2023 20:19

Snape really needs to be horrible
looking. The Jim Kay illustrations of him are brilliant.

I know it's only early stages, but have they said when this is due to be released?

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 16/04/2023 20:44

No, not yet.

I feel like Mrs Weasley should be someone like Kirsty Allsop - do you think she would consider acting? Phil Spencer can be Mr Weasley 🤭

Kirsty's currently heavily involved in a 'beee kiiind!' spiral on Twitter so wouldn't have thought so.

GinUnicorn · 16/04/2023 21:07

This is fun.

Love the idea of Sheridan Smith as Mrs Dursley.

Julie Andrews or Judy Dench Mrs McGonagall

Caroline Quentin - Professor Umbridge

Idris Elba - Dumbledore

Nina Sosaya - Trelawney

Buffypaws · 16/04/2023 21:15

I want it to be a completely faithful adaptation of the book. Line by line.

Takoneko · 16/04/2023 21:17

Julie Andrews and Judy Dench are both approaching 90, I don’t think either of them are going to be signing on for a 10 year project.

aSofaNearYou · 16/04/2023 21:27

I reckon characters like McGonnagall could be younger than we might expect - she was another character that seemed younger in the book, more middle aged.

WoodenFloorboards · 16/04/2023 21:33

Yes although I wouldn't go any older than early seventies for any character who's in all seven books, you could easily cast McGonagall with an actress in her fifties. The problem is that she's in the second Fantastic Beasts movie, set in 1927, which makes her way older than that in actual years, but we assume that witches age slowly.

Yes - me too! With the characters as close to their descriptions as possible (as well as being great actors!)

I must be stuck in the past. I imagine both of them in their 50s!

Sudden brainwave - Bill Bailey Hagrid

Sudden brainwave - Bill Bailey Hagrid

That would be brilliant!

I'd like Kevin from Motherland in there somewhere. Maybe as Mr Weasley?!

SinisterBumFacedCat · 16/04/2023 23:27

De-gnome-ing the Weasley’s garden, I love the fact that Harry is really excited to do it and all the Weasley kids are bored and stroppy about it.

TheClitterati · 16/04/2023 23:30

I'm really hoping the tv series will be a forensic adaptation of the books. I want it all!

I never really enjoyed the films. They were ok. Apart from the Half Blood Prince which I thought was a real let down.

FirstFallopians · 16/04/2023 23:55

I think we need to be realistic about casting.

This is a ten year project, so anyone signing up for Dumbledore, Hagrid, McGonagall or Snape will need to be committed to the full run. That’ll mean potentially rejecting other projects that might interest them for a decade, depending on shooting schedule. Kind of like Game of Thrones- Sean Bean was the only well known face when it kicked off, and he was knocked off sharpish!

Then there will be people wary of making a professional connection to JKR. She herself might be Teflon (Terflon 🤓) but there will be plenty of established actors who just couldn’t be arsed with the agro they’d get.

I reckon there will be a few established actors in more minor roles like Mad Eye or Rita Skeeter, but the guts of the cast won’t be household names.

Kevin from Motherland is a great shout! Maybe as Fudge?

How about Amanda from Motherland as Umbridge?

BertieBotts · 17/04/2023 09:07

AmyandPhilip this would be amazing!!

I'd rather it's a cast of unknowns to be honest. So long as they can act, I don't care about who they are - I want to see the character, not Famous Person as the character.

Nick Frost as Hagrid! Although Bill Bailey is inspired.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 17/04/2023 10:21

I want Jeremy Swift in it. Don't care what role. He has to be in it.

Runningoutofusernamestochange · 17/04/2023 21:55

If there’s an open casting I’m signing DS up to audition for Harry! He’d be fab!
