New Harry Potter TV adaptation: What details are you hoping get included?

Things that weren't in the film adaptations, either due to technology not being available to show it on film, budget, or cutting due to run time.

Little detail: in the Philosopher's Stone, one of the ways the Hogwarts letters are delivered to the Dursley house is rolled up inside a dozen eggs, passed through the window to Aunt Petunia (as the door is already nailed shut). I would love to see Aunt Petunia cracking open eggs and finding a Hogwarts letter inside each one.

Big detail: The whole scene in which the Weasley family attempt to come get Harry from Privet Drive ahead of the Quidditch World Cup, by connecting their fireplace to the Floo network, then can't get out as it's an electric fire, end up blasting half the living room apart and Fred & George "accidentally" let Dudley eat a Ton Tongue Toffee.

What's yours? One big detail and one little detail allowed each!

Wow this is exciting!

My petty point is Hermione's dress in the Yule Ball... it was periwinkle not bloody pink! There is so much wrong in that film...

I hope they manage to cast a green-eyed Harry Potter, a sizzling hot Sirius Black and a fair-haired Narcissa Malfoy. Harry's parents were very early twenties when they died, not middle aged! And the remaining marauders need to be the right age. Agree that we need a decent werewolf, not the weird creature on TPOA. I love the idea of Tom Felton returning as Lucius Malfoy! Genius!

I wonder what they will do about the music. John Williams' music was wonderful and is so linked to the story in people's minds...

We are reading book 4 with the kids as their bedtime story we do a chapter a night. We finally after what felt like months, finished, and decided to watch the film.

The pace of the first probably 30 minutes of the film left us feeling a bit motion sick. It absoloutley races through the world cup, the other schools coming, and the names coming out of the hat. We all felt so disappointed.

Did anyone sign up to pottermore website? I remember I got early access and it was great but then they changed it and it was crap

People say it a lot but Adam Driver has the perfect look for Snape.

Yes we were thinking the exact same thing earlier today

ObiWanKanobi · 16/04/2023 06:05

I have been watching House of the Dragon and Ewan Mitchell who plays Aemond would make a great Snape (although I need to imagine him with black hair instead long flowing blonde locks!)

Ian Mckellan for Dumbledore? He has the blue twinkling eyes although might get Gandalf vibes. It is very difficult to think of Britush actors who have not already been in the films.

sashh · 16/04/2023 06:27

I'd like to see Idris Elba as Dumbledore.

Talapia · 16/04/2023 06:38

The house elves story
Snapes back story, more detailed rather than the rush job it was in the film.
St Mungo's

I wonder how much the budget is for the series though as this will impact a lot of the magic and detail.

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 16/04/2023 08:39

HBO have said there basically won't be a budget limit 😄or that it will at least match the budget for House of the Dragon which was something bonkers like $100million.

It's gonna look AMAZING.

Oo yes I can totally picture that, too!

This is so exciting - I'm another one who loved the books and hated the movies. They missed out so much good stuff and the casting was mostly terrible. I really hope they do this right - put all the little details and dialogue in that made this world and these characters so mesmerising for us readers.

Firstly, I think they need to cast mostly unknowns, and get them spot on. So many of the actors in the movies were big names - the who's who of British acting - and it was sort of distracting - oh there's such and such, instead of focusing on the actual character.
Like others have said, do some of the supporting characters some justice also - Ron especially, the twins, ginny, McGonagall and Umbridge.

Then I'd love them to do the Order of the Phoenix properly - they basically ignored so much detail from that book. The opening chapter with the old man (Frank Brice?) finding Voldemort and Pettigrew and confronting them, details about the Quidditch World Cup, the Yule Ball, so many details missed or changed.

Another thing I really would have loved was a prequel focusing on Lily and James and their time in school, how they got together, the Marauders Map, Sirius and Pettigrew and Lupin's 'furry little problem', how they bullied Snape at school, how the four of them learned to be Animagi and got up to all sorts - then later on the rise of Voldemort and the original Order of the Phoenix and ending with Lily and James' death and the fall of Voldemort. There's so much potential there, even from a few memories in a pensieve...that could be a whole other book!

WoodenFloorboards · 16/04/2023 09:39

The advantage of a TV series is that you could do six episodes for the earlier books, moving up to twelve or more for the later ones.

Tisfortired · 16/04/2023 09:46

@SirSamVimesCityWatch really weird to see this as I was watching the American version of the Philosophers Stone with DS the other day and it included the scene with the letters in the eggs! Have a google see if you can find it 😊

2pence · 16/04/2023 10:06

Anthony Hopkins as Dumbledore perhaps?

WoodenFloorboards · 16/04/2023 10:30

Hopkins is eighty five and this is probably a ten year project. I wouldn't go much above seventy for Dumbledore.

Someone linked to it up thread, it's great! I had no idea they'd filmed it.

I'd like the story of the Marauders' Map to be properly explained. It made no sense in the film why it responded to Lupin but not Snape (at least, not in the way he wanted).

I want the staircases done properly. Magical rather than just moving from side to side. So that the ones which lead somewhere else on Fridays do so unexpectedly.

I want to hear the Talking Hat's songs, and more of Dubledore's ramblings at the start of year feasts.

Yy to St Mungo's, Quidditch World Cup and everything else!

BordoisAgain · 16/04/2023 15:44

They missed out the whole story arc about Harry or Neville being "the one" and Voldemort being the catalyst for how own eventual defeat.

Pinkbonbon · 16/04/2023 17:30

I think Freddie highmore might make a good Snape.

He's around the right age and has a fantastic range. I'm sure he could do Snapes simmering rage and contempt very well.

Have to agree with the poster that suggested Asa Butterfield too. I can see him as a messy haired James Potter.

Takoneko · 16/04/2023 18:27

I think Matthew Beard would be an excellent Snape.

MadEyeJudy · 16/04/2023 18:38

My mind is a whirl with all the casting possibilities (who haven't already been in the films). Jodi Comer as Bellatrix? Olivia Coleman as Mrs W? Danny Mays as Pettigrew or Mr W? ....

AmyandPhilipfan · 16/04/2023 18:46

I think it would be nice if lots of the originals got parts, like with Christina Ricci being in Wednesday.

The original kids are now the Sirius etc kind of ages and I could see some of them in those roles.

Tom Felton would be good as Lucius obviously, but I also think Emma Watson would be good as Narcissa.

I reckon Warwick Davies will be back as Flitwick.

I think Emma Thompson could play a very good McGonagall.

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 16/04/2023 18:56

Emma Watson wouldn't touch it, she's too far enmeshed in the "JKR is an evil terf" narrative.

I don't want to have the originals beyond a cameo - I want it to be new! I always find the whole 'oooh, aren't we being terribly cheeky and meta with our casting' really smug and off putting. It ruins it. First sight of Christina Ricci in Wednesday and I thought 'I bet she ends up a villain' because it was just such a smug thing to do.

I feel like Mrs Weasley should be someone like Kirsty Allsop - do you think she would consider acting? Phil Spencer can be Mr Weasley 🤭
