New Harry Potter TV adaptation: What details are you hoping get included?

Things that weren't in the film adaptations, either due to technology not being available to show it on film, budget, or cutting due to run time.

Little detail: in the Philosopher's Stone, one of the ways the Hogwarts letters are delivered to the Dursley house is rolled up inside a dozen eggs, passed through the window to Aunt Petunia (as the door is already nailed shut). I would love to see Aunt Petunia cracking open eggs and finding a Hogwarts letter inside each one.

Big detail: The whole scene in which the Weasley family attempt to come get Harry from Privet Drive ahead of the Quidditch World Cup, by connecting their fireplace to the Floo network, then can't get out as it's an electric fire, end up blasting half the living room apart and Fred & George "accidentally" let Dudley eat a Ton Tongue Toffee.

What's yours? One big detail and one little detail allowed each!

Bill bailey would be far far better as a Peter pettigrew rather than a hagrid.

Too old!! Pettigrew should be mid 30s by the time he un-rats.

Jamie Bell would make a good Peter Pettigrew. (In the nicest way possible) he has a ratty like face and looks younger than he actually is.

How are people planning on actually watching this though?! It's going to be on HBO Max which isn't available in the UK 🤔

They've said it will be available to watch globally. So I assume one of our streaming services will pick it up. if not there's always a way

WoodenFloorboards · 24/04/2023 18:56

HBO Max shows are normally available on Now TV in the UK I think - that's how I watched Game of Thrones/House of the Dragon.

Minesril · 25/04/2023 08:24

I think the St Mungos scene may have been too upsetting and push the age rating up. I like the way the films did deal with Neville's backstory though: the crying at the window in GOF; explaining to Harry what happened in OOTP with the photos in the background; and the bit with Bellatrix: 'how's mum and dad?' 'Better now they're going to be avenged!'

Did anyone ever read the Red Hen articles? There was a wonderful one about Neville which theorised that having witnessed what magic did to his parents, he tried to suppress it in himself, which is why he didn't really try in his first few years of Hogwarts. In fact, the reason the hat took so long to sort him was because it was trying to persuade him that he was a wizard full stop!

What's with Idris Elba as Dumbledore?!?!? Absolutely not! The man is too young and far far far too handsome. Not to mention he plays a hard man, action character. Dumbledore is not that at all.

Olivia Coleman as Mrs Weasley is inspired.

Bill bailey would be far far better as a Peter pettigrew rather than a hagrid.

Idris Elba is an actor though. I have no doubt he could play a compassionate wizard just as well as he plays Luther. And Dumbledore really should have a core of menace about him - he's the most powerful wizard in the world, not a bumbling duffer who got his Order of Merlin (first class) for growing a very nice beard.

And make up is a thing. He wouldn't be Idris Elba, he'd be Dumbledore.

Jourdain11 · 25/04/2023 21:34

What about Colin Morgan as Sirius?

I'd like Charles Dance as Dumbledore.

Agree Olivia Colman would be fab as Molly Weasley!

Waitwhat23 · 25/04/2023 21:50

Charles Dance is Vetinari to me (Discworld). I cannot see him as anything else!

I think Olivia Coleman is too old to play Molly, surely Molly was only about 40 when Ron went to Hogwarts?

I'm 37 this year, I can play her 😂

Takoneko · 26/04/2023 07:59

If Molly Weasley is only 40 at the start of the books then she had 6 kids by the age of 29. I think she would have been a bit older than that. Bill and Charlie had both already left Hogwarts by that stage. Although the books don’t say explicitly, I always imagined her as significantly older than Harry’s parents would have been. I don’t think Olivia Colman at 49 is wildly out of range. I think she and Arthur would likely have been mid to late forties at the start and early to mid fifties at the end of the series.

slithytoveisascientist · 26/04/2023 08:05

Hp wiki says Bill was born Nov 1970 when Molly was about 20, and Ron Mar 1980, so under 10 years for 5 pregnancies.

So she would be 41-2 at the start. I suppose she might look older, it's a hard life with seven kids

I had five kids in seven and a half years and can testify to looking raddled and ancient.

Blimey, vroom, that's good going! My ovaries are tying themselves in knots just thinking about it!

@Vroomfondleswaistcoat 😂😂😂 maybe Olivia Coleman is perfect then!

SoManyCreepyBears · 28/04/2023 22:41

I want both Michael Sheen and David Tennant in it. Really don’t know who as though but I think they’d be amazing in any role.

GrandTheftWalrus · 29/04/2023 18:36

David Tennant was Barty crouch Jr in the films.

SoManyCreepyBears · 29/04/2023 18:48

He can come back- I don’t mind!

imnotwhoyouthinkiam · 29/04/2023 18:54

Our dream cast so far involves
David Tennant (for me)
Tom Hiddlestone (for my mum)
Tom Holland (for DS1)
Harry Styles (for DS2)

We don't care who plays what part. And obviously need to get a lot more characters. But that's our list so far.

CandlelightGlow · 29/04/2023 19:00

Haven't RTFT yet because I'm too excited to wait before I add my suggestions! 😇

The biggest thing for me and something sorely missed from the movies was the frequency of corporeal patronuses.

I am super boring so instead of any big ticket scenes from the books that are missing from the movies, I would really love to have more details of the general life at wizarding school - more lessons, more hobbies and extracurricular type things, silly homework etc. I am desperately hoping that because of the fact it will be a TV series, they will have the time for it!

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 29/04/2023 19:04

Hugh Grant for Gilderoy Lockhart
Matt Smith for Remus Lupin

Havent completed the thread but I was gutted that the twins entire storyline in OOTP was missed, I remember reading it thinking this will be amazing on film

HBO have an exclusivity thing with SKY

Basically if it's HBO it will be found on Sky Atlantic and Now TV

I might be projecting but I actually feel like Idris could make an amazing Dumbledore. There are 2 sides to Dumbledore - his sparkling humour and playfulness, and his imposing grandeur. I know Idris is quite young but he's not ever so young that he'd be completely unbelievable in a long wig and beard!

doadeer · 29/04/2023 19:07

I want to see Charlie Wesley!!!!

I never thought Bill was very well cast. He wasn't cool enough
