Mumsnet “norms” that annoy you most

For me it’s the utterly obscure baby names. We’ve all seen them and I’m quite sure nobody uses them in real life. Yet on MN, it’s apparently standard.

Honourable mention to the 50% of posters whose husbands are earning upwards of £100K too.

OP posts:
Schmutter · 31/03/2023 22:35

The allusion to the husband’s ‘hobby’ without giving details.

It’s almost certainly golf or cycling; I don’t get the secretiveness. It’s hardly identifying.

TeenLifeMum · 31/03/2023 22:35

I look at the women I work with who are earning more than 100k and I can’t imagine any of them are mnetters. But obviously I could be wrong. In my world, earning £40-50k is a decent salary but in mn terms I think I’d get sympathy. Oh and you can only afford to live in London if you earn 6 figures… so the hospital band 2-8 staff, teachers, cleaners, waiters, shop assistants in London must all either live on the street in boxes or vaporise in between shifts.

BiscuitLover3678 · 31/03/2023 22:36

The really horrible treatment of sahp and particularly sahm. Nasty and calling them stupid at worst and incredibly patronising and ‘concerned’ at best. Don’t put everyone in a box. Taking 3 years out of paid work to do it isn’t as horrific as you all think.

The number of people who will come on and defend lax parenting when children are being a pain in the arse in public and parents are on their phones instead of supervising their kids.

Because crap parents seem to be the norm. I’m heavily involved in the kids’ football teams and honestly so many parents literally turn away rather than dealing with bad behaviour. My husband is a coach and gives three warnings for bad behaviour followed by a five minute time out. Some parents think he is too tough. These kids talk back, refuse to do the drills etc.

Kanaloa · 31/03/2023 21:37

Being terrified of normal food items - ie scornfully ripping apart someone’s meal plan because it’s disgusting that they would feed their kids a banana, it’s basically empty sugar and they should be having lightly toasted homegrown seeds. When in real life most kids get a ham or cheese sandwich, a penguin or a Kit Kat, and maybe a tangerine/apple/banana and that is absolutely fine.

Also asking ‘school mums.’ So somebody will post ‘oh I can’t get anyone to pick up my kids while I have a doctors appointment’ and it will be ‘just ask one of the school mums.’ As if it’s normal to approach people you don’t know asking them for favours. But on the flip side if a school mum asks you to pick her child up she’s a cheeky fucker who is trying to use you for childcare.

So true

MorrisZapp · 31/03/2023 22:37

I've never seen anyone suggesting solutions to poverty or to childcare issues using the word 'just...'.

'just take in ironing', never seen it.

”vaporise” 😂😂

Hiring a nanny/cleaner/personal chef will solve all life problems

TheIsleOfTheLost · 31/03/2023 22:39

The abbreviations when they are the same letters. So talking about dn and dn. Why not just say nice and nephew? Would be a lot easier to follow! And d anyone when it's clear the poster can't stand them any more.

Bitching about Mumsnet on Mumsnet. Nobody is obliged to be on here. It’s free, it’s entertaining, and it’s often useful when you want a range of views or advice.

Toilet brushes. Until Mumsnet I didn't know it was such a heinous crime.

TeenLifeMum · 31/03/2023 22:41

@Dippydinosaurus i feel like such a rebel when I use mine 😆

Landlord = evil
SAHMs = lazy / stupid
WMs = obv don't care enough about their children

Old people : greedy entitled misers counting their illgotten hoards in their massive houses that cost them sixpence and which they should be grateful to give away to someone who has miraculously increased the average IQ of the human race by pushing a child our of her fanny.

JamSandle · 31/03/2023 22:42

People repeating the same advice in once post many times...then beginning to use capital letters to explain JUST LEAVE, JUST MOVE, JUST THIS. As if the poster is dense and as if that simple a solution.

WunWun · 31/03/2023 22:42

Competitively short shower times along with faux shock at anyone who takes longer than two minutes to shower.

I always imagine a group of jolly sensible Malory towers types coming along to be jolly little athletic bullies while eating three loaves of bread per day and not caring about any of the modern fashions because the coolest clothes are those you can pinch from mum’s wardrobe or pick up at the charity shop.

Yes! And they’re so sensible that they always prefer plain water over fizzy drinks and always choose carrot sticks and tomatoes (“toms”) over haribo

If a random person is rude af to you, you can’t say anything to them.....they might have dementia. 🤔

From the old man in the petrol station thread? 😂

OP posts:

Harassing men off of the site for asking questions that a woman would get a nice(er) response to.

WeeBitOfWoo · 31/03/2023 22:45

The London hate.

Filthy, crime ridden den of depravity. One couldn’t possibly raise children there!

Daisybee6 · 31/03/2023 22:45

Oh

And posters who say they called a man in public 'random man' to his face

I would feel embarrassed for them if I witnessed that

Hi 👋

The love for JKR

The way 'woke' is used as an insult.

OhFFS! · 31/03/2023 22:49

That all car owners are lazy and not concerned about the planet. Just get a bus/train/walk even though a lot of places outside cities don't have the public transport or pavements to walk on
