Mumsnet “norms” that annoy you most

For me it’s the utterly obscure baby names. We’ve all seen them and I’m quite sure nobody uses them in real life. Yet on MN, it’s apparently standard.

Honourable mention to the 50% of posters whose husbands are earning upwards of £100K too.

If you worry about anything, ever: have you been to the GP about your anxiety?

There's a thread I saw earlier where an OP was looking for ideas as to what was making her feel sick at certain times of the day, and was immediately met with the predictably smug:

"And you're asking Mumsnet and not seeing a GP because?"

Chowtime · 31/03/2023 21:52

"I'm not eligible for a mortgage because i'm self employed"

"he doesn't have to pay child support because he's self employed"

camelfinger · 31/03/2023 21:52

A Paddington hard stare is sufficient to get everyone into line.

Why are you even asking this question? Why would anyone worry about it? Just don't worry about it.

LondonQueen · 31/03/2023 21:53

"No is a complete sentence". No it's not!

HighInfidelity · 31/03/2023 21:53

The obsessive hygiene levels.

The RG university snobbery.

RosesInWater · 31/03/2023 21:54

When someone asks why their house hasn't had an offer in five minutes, some will demand that the vendor spend the value of the house doing it up to ensure the asking price. Seriously?

Yes and the crazy school threads.

Are some allowed to earn this? I do.

MrsMariaReynolds · 31/03/2023 21:55

Spouses and children with non-descript but v v important "hobbies" that are too identifying to be mentioned on a public forum. Said hobbies always cause massive disruption to family life, yet cannot possibly be named.

CountingMareep · 31/03/2023 21:56

Yes to the competitive undereating, and the fixation some posters have with absolute numbers with either weight, calories or BMI. You don’t have to have a diagnosed ED for too much of this to mess with your head quite spectacularly.

ItsThePlayBusDingDing · 31/03/2023 21:56

"Have you tried telling your MIL to just fuck herself, then head tilt and tinkly laugh, that will show her she can't go knitting a cardigan for your baby without permission"

Ames85 · 31/03/2023 21:57

Man bashing. Husbands/partners must immediately be ditched for being anything other than perfect. Talking and working on relationships couldn’t possibly be a sensible solution

ItsThePlayBusDingDing · 31/03/2023 21:57

Oh let's not forget a poster having 2 glasses of wine or a couple of G&Ts on a Saturday night being told they have a drinking problem too.

CountingMareep · 31/03/2023 21:58

camelfinger · 31/03/2023 21:52

The latest version of ‘Did you mean to be so rude?’ or ‘No is a complete sentence’.

ChocHotolate · 31/03/2023 21:58

No one's child ever seems to fail the 11 plus exam

ChillysWaterBottle · 31/03/2023 21:58

The compulsive use of the word 'entitled', especially when it relates to parents of young children existing in anything but a state of constant cringing apology.

CutOffs · 31/03/2023 21:59

If a random person is rude af to you, you can’t say anything to them.....they might have dementia. 🤔

LubaLuca · 31/03/2023 22:00

All teenaged sons are big strapping 6 footers, with not a scrap of fat on them.

I have skinny sons of average height who have skinny friends. Only one of the friends is 6'+.

BeatriceFranklin · 31/03/2023 22:02

The MN buzzwords

The condescending use of ‘please use critical thinking’.

CountingMareep · 31/03/2023 22:03

Oh, and all these people who are apparently disgusted and irritated and appalled by perfectly normal activities like eating crisps or wiping your mouth with a tissue. Do they ever leave the house?

GelPens1 · 31/03/2023 22:03
  1. Earning under £70k a year is poverty.
  2. Consuming under 1000 calories a day is fine for an adult and their children barely eat.
  3. ’Just get a nanny and a cleaner.’
  4. It’s practically child abuse to make 2 same sex biological siblings share a bedroom.
XenoBitch · 31/03/2023 22:03

Oh, the dog hating. No one should have a pet dog... they just want a being that that they can exert power over. All dogs should be muzzled and on a lead in public.

Someone who is struggling with the cost of living told to just retrain and get a better job. Like it is that easy. Or move to a cheaper area.
