Mumsnet “norms” that annoy you most

For me it’s the utterly obscure baby names. We’ve all seen them and I’m quite sure nobody uses them in real life. Yet on MN, it’s apparently standard.

Honourable mention to the 50% of posters whose husbands are earning upwards of £100K too.

OP posts:

@Covetthee

Omg the gender disappointment threads are actually full of batshit posters but only if the poster says she wanted a girl!

.....the boy mums go mental as if the OP has personally attacked them Or their precious sons. 🙄

Very telling isn't it? I never ever see women with daughters getting mortally wounded and offended when someone says they prefer boys - or would like a son... But mums of boys go batshit if you DARE to say you long for a daughter. (Most of them anyway.) The ones who get angry and snippy are clearly projecting, and they desire a daughter deep down. (They won't admit this!)

DannyZukosSmile · 04/04/2023 20:38

@Cofis

Endless numbers of showers......

@tuvamoodyson

I find the opposite. People who only shower once a week but ‘definitely don’t smell’

@Mothership4two

but they still wash..??.

@tuvamoodyson

Well, I hope so…in my opinion it’s much quicker to shower than faff about at the sink with a flannel, obviously, that’s only my opinion though.

Agree tuvamoodyson. I cannot fathom WHY anyone would wash all their body - legs/feet/arms/armpits/hands/face/arse/neck etc etc etc, (and presumably have several different flannels coz you're not gonna wipe your face with the same flannel you washed your arse feet with! OR use the same flannel you washed your arse with to wash your feet with.)

Ludicrous faff, would take 3 times longer than a shower, and I don't know a SOUL in real life who does this. EVERYONE has a shower. Even the people I know who have disabilities. Sink/flannel washes have not been a thing for ANYONE since 1963. (Only on mumsnet!!!) 😆

@Robinni

Mandatory RTFT!! - if there are 42 pgs then I don’t have time unless it’s actually very interesting.

Yeah this. ^ I CBA to read the full thread, even if it's only 10 pages! 5 or less then yeah, maybe. Not that I think I am speshul and da rooolz don't apply to me. I just CBA. (Sometimes I will read 10-12 pages if it's a very interesting, frothy, juicy thread, but 4 out of 5 times I won't.) So sue me!!!

(I do agree that it doesn't hurt to quickly read the OP's posts though... in case they have the answer they need, and it's all been resolved/concluded...)

Step mums can never ever complain about anything to do with their DSC. They knew what they were getting into.

I always imagine a group of jolly sensible Malory towers types coming along to be jolly little athletic bullies while eating three loaves of bread per day and not caring about any of the modern fashions because the coolest clothes are those you can pinch from mum’s wardrobe or pick up at the charity shop.

😂😂 oh yes!! Loving your imagination!

Why would how other people feed their babies upset you?

XenoBitch · 04/04/2023 21:18

DannyZukosSmile · 04/04/2023 20:34

I'm not close to tears about it, but it IS tragic that so many new mums can't be arsed to even TRY to breastfeed their baby. Yes yes yes I KNOW some CAN'T - but some don't even TRY.

What does it have to do with you though? It has zero effect on how you feed your own babies.

This is like the comment about smear tests too. Someone struggling with them has fuck all to do with you. So why even get annoyed about it? Total waste of your energy.

DannyZukosSmile · 04/04/2023 21:20

A woman choosing to not have a smear test is only affecting HER. Quite an obvious answer @XenoBitch But you knew that didn't you?

IsThePopeCatholic · 04/04/2023 21:21

So many contradictory posts in this thread. It just shows there are no mumsnet ‘norms’. We’re all as guilty as each other.

Look a few pages back, and there is a poster who was annoyed that some women find smear tests traumatic. She did not believe it to be a legitimate thing, and that no one should ever mention it online in case it puts people off.

ComeOnNumber100 · 04/04/2023 21:31

I love it when someone questions a comment then the poster come back at the questioner reeling off their qualifications or experience.

And? We've moved on... People who were ff go on to have perfectly healthy lives! If someone chooses to bf great. If someone chooses to ff great.

ReneBumsWombats · 04/04/2023 22:05

The precise opposite of baby feeding applies here. Don't give them what they want...

Florenz · 04/04/2023 22:26

All children go to "uni". Whether or not they are academic.

Toddlerteaplease · 04/04/2023 22:34

The obsession with the 11+ and grammar schools. I didn't even know it still existed until I came to Mumsnet. And I wouldn't want a child of mine to take it either.

@DannyZukosSmile completely agree, always read the OP posts so you know wtf is going on. But I cannot bear trailing through 47 posts all saying variations of “what a bastard” (or equivalent depending on subject matter) and not actually giving any advice or helpful support whatsoever.

Robinni · 04/04/2023 23:47

Also @DannyZukosSmile, great name btw, I have John Travolta beaming in my mind haha.

Re. Breast feeding, I think we have to get over the fact that some will opt for an easy life on day 1, while the rest of us slog and whimper through what was (for me anyway) agony and exhaustion until 4 months, then it was great! No washing bottles, hurrah!
It’s an individual choice, and each lady should be supported. What utterly pissed me off, while I was struggling post caesarean to feed and didn’t have a clue what I was doing first time… was that while there was no lactation consultant or any help for breast feeding mothers, the NHS had opted to PAY for formula - bottle trolley wheeled round every hour or so and the ladies in my ward all took it, and five mins later were back to reading magazines!! While I sat there with continual cluster feeding hours on end. You can tell I’m still pissed off about it, really needed help. Funding could be better allocated…. For sure..

As for smears, completely get that people can find it traumatic and have all sorts of issues about it. However, their decision not to have it done doesn’t impact just them if they turn out to have cancer - think family, husband, kids and how crap it would be for them to lose their daughter, wife, mother… I would hope that anyone apprehensive is supported via therapy to be able to eventually have this potentially life saving procedure.

It’s so not tragic. Formula fed babies grow up as strong and healthy as a breastfed baby. What seems important when they’re tiny is so irrelevant in the longer term

Sorry @Houseyvibe but that isn’t quite right, the composition and function of cows milk vs human milk is really quite different. And furthermore the milk that the mother produces changes over time to match the development of the baby, whereas formula is a constant.

Can appreciate many choose not to bf as is bloody hard work, my supply ran out and I couldn’t do it beyond 10m so I’m hardly perfecto myself. But there is a reason they are only able to advertise formula with the prerequisite that bf is best. More below if anyone is interested in the science.

** have previously stated ff or bf women should be supported with their choice.

Responded to above poster as they stated that impact of bf is “irrelevant” long term - which scientifically speaking is incorrect.

Long term healthy diet, lifestyle and modern medicine have far more impact on a humans life in the long term so it really doesn't matter how a baby is fed, as long as they are. If this weren't true (about diet/lifestyle/medicine/environment) then humans wouldn't have died so young throughout history because being breast fed would have ensured they were healthy as it was the only feeding option. They died younger because the cofactors as stated were mostly poor in the long run. Now they have improved people live longer.

The bf argument is so shortsighted. I mean if someone wants to feed that was great but it's certainly not a guarantee for a healthy life in the long term.

ReneBumsWombats · 05/04/2023 07:13

There are benefits to breast milk.

But I never met anyone who could look at a class of six year olds and work out who was breastfed and who was formula fed.

No idea which of my adult friends and acquaintances were either.
