*trigger warning* Nuclear War - Is it more likely than you thought?

dreamofalightahead · 28/03/2023 20:47

Weeks ago I would've said, no, very unlikely to ever happen at all. Nobody wins, etc etc

Recent events, none I can even pinpoint, give me a different feel and I suddenly think it's more likely to happen soon than I did weeks ago

What does everyone else think?

Not everyone is scared & you can’t protect everyone from scary things on the internet. It says what it’s about in the title so people that are scared don’t have to read.

Op, I just don’t think about it. I just think if there’s nothing I can do, it is what it is & if it happens, I just hope I go quickly.

However, you just made me order a 100ml bottle my fave perfume that I haven’t had for ages(years!). No point saving, I can’t take it with me🤣

anon666 · 28/03/2023 22:47

I spent literally my whole childhood being terrified of nuclear war.

Now I look back and think what a waste of energy that was. I live a day at a time mostly.

If it happens it will be so horrendous that having predicted it will be no consolation.

This really opened my eyes Shock

Opened your eyes to what exactly? It's film clips. Some (maybe all) from the Terminator films, a well known science fiction franchise.

Do some people enjoy making others anxious or delight in scary things, what a thing to post

Recycledblonde · 28/03/2023 22:51

I’m a child of the 60s/70s and am very much of the ‘whatever will be will be’ thought process. Nothing I can do about it so don’t stress.

CockSpadget · 28/03/2023 22:52

It will happen, no doubt in my mind about that, but when is a different matter. Could be next week, could be in a hundred years. We really have no idea what actually goes on between the puppet masters. All I know is there is absolutely no point in worrying about it, just the same as anything we have absolutely zero control over.

PogoThePunk · 28/03/2023 22:58

So long as it doesn't happen before I go on holiday, or I'll be majorly pissed off at losing my money.

@museumum I was a child in the 80s too. Then I was worried. This feels nothing like those days to me. I worry about a lot of things, but nuclear war isn't one of them.

Agree 100%

Yes, there are people whose agenda and job (paid in roubles) it is to pretend that the nuclear threat is bigger than Pootin's willy. These threads come ever so often because we in the UK have got bored with same 'ol same 'ol crap from his dopplegangers. These posters are often first time 'disingenuous' posters or have a smattering of recent posts. The more diligent ones try to create an electronic trail but often have a short attention span so that gives them away. After all, it is just a job.

The idea is to make the UK population of a nuclear war so scared that they pressure the government to withdraw support for Ukraine. Hth.

PsychoHotSauce · 28/03/2023 20:50

Nothing surprises me anymore. Maybe it will happen, maybe it won't. But there's fuck all I can do about it so I'm not going to worry about it.

Same 🤷 nothing we as people can do.. that’s what happens when you have a psychopath running countries. It was bound to happen at some point, if it does happen we will most likely be dead so not gonna care about it after either..

GraysPapaya · 28/03/2023 23:16

2 years ago I wouldn’t have imagined Putin would try and take a sovereign nation, totally unprovoked, so I wouldn’t put anything past him.

I think he’s an unstable nutter, and when he’s backed into a corner with nothing to lose (because Russia cannot lose this war, he’ll be finished), who knows what he’ll do.

Yep. They are not half as subtle or clever as they think they are.

scoobydoo1971 · 28/03/2023 23:23

Me. 70's child. I was forced to watch threads in school. The cold war was on my mind back then, and not so much post-Chernobyl. Dropping a nuke on one NATO country means MAD or at least retaliation, and if the wind is blowing in the wrong direction then you are going to radiate your own population fairly quickly.

CockSpadget · 28/03/2023 23:23

I’ll also add, China is loving the distraction that Putin is causing right now.

Anyfeckinusername · 28/03/2023 23:23

museumum · 28/03/2023 21:17

nope, can’t say I feel worried. Can I ask how old you are @dreamofalightahead? I am late 40s and nuclear war feels far less of a threat to me now than it did in my childhood/teens. I’d be interested to know if others who remember the 80s feel similarly.

Yes! I'm 48 and remember the childhood threat of nuclear war vividly - it was a massively real concern. That and the ozone layer burning a hole over Australia! These seemed to be the two Big Things. Sure remember spitting image and all those gags about pushing the Big Red B utton... Reagan and ... was it Gorbachev in spitting image?

Greenshake · 28/03/2023 23:26

I knew this post would go this way, in fact I called it on the first page. OP decides to whip up some hysteria with some faux ignorance and what seems to be a Terminator film clip (!!!), people jump on the bandwagon and totally ignore any post based on fact, common sense or reality. All those stirring the pot should be ashamed of themselves.

I’m also 40’s and back when the gulf war was erupting I was terrified about ‘the big red button being pressed’ so I think early 90’s - like yourself I also feel it is far less likely to happen now.

Lysianthus · 28/03/2023 23:33

OP you need to understand how much of a narcissist Putin is, to realise the last thing he wants is to die. Which would be the inevitability of an attack emanating from Russia. His long long (long) table was to avoid catching anything from strangers (Macron et al).

I know it's hard if you're young, but we lived through threats of the 80s, Israel/Palestine then Central Europe, then Iran/Iraq/Afghanistan then 2001, and now here we are. My parents had a major WW, Vietnam, Middle East. Not forgetting most of Africa in one way or another, now hugely financed by China. And India/Pakistan.

Not sure where you can live, perhaps Down Under?

I wonder if your post was actually prompted by the riots and protests in Israel. That's v worrying. But if you stick a pin in the globe almost anywhere right now, you would have reason to be worried.

Coastalvenues · 28/03/2023 23:37

Not sure the OP is really that bothered tbh

IClaudine · 28/03/2023 23:40

You coming back OP? I really want to know what The Terminator clip "opened your eyes" to.

Furries · 28/03/2023 23:43

I really wouldn’t waste time in trying to reassure the poster, I don’t think they’re worried.

Am amused that Terminator film clips have “opened their eyes”. To what exactly? That the franchise has gone on too long? As an aside, can’t believe it’s coming up to 40 years since it was released, I feel old 🤣

I know Grin
I went to see it on my first ever date.

Furries · 28/03/2023 23:45

Maybe the OP could post an “I’ll be back” holding message whilst they think of further doom and gloom scenarios to post.

Kerfuffler · 28/03/2023 23:45

^ terminator 2, that is.
