*trigger warning* Nuclear War - Is it more likely than you thought?

dreamofalightahead · 28/03/2023 20:47

Weeks ago I would've said, no, very unlikely to ever happen at all. Nobody wins, etc etc

Recent events, none I can even pinpoint, give me a different feel and I suddenly think it's more likely to happen soon than I did weeks ago

What does everyone else think?

Yes, it's coming, unfortunately.

It's alright the self-styled stoical Generation X'ers on here saying how terrible things were for them in the 80's, etc, but the fact is, the Doomsday Clock is as close to Midnight (90 seconds) as it has ever been since its inception in 1947.

There is a reason for it, despite what the Findus crispy pancake munching, space hopping, pop swatch wearing Goonies preach.

dreamofalightahead · 28/03/2023 22:11

@PomonaPomona didn't actually know what a Dooms day clock was before googling

Just had a look and you're actually right. It's the closest it's been to midnight, so 'end of the world' type scenario, since 1947

Do any of you remember the advice...what to do when the 4 minute warning came...first take off a door...now I don't know about you but it would take me 4 mins to find a suitable screw driver..maybe that was to keep you busy .

That did make me chuckle

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 28/03/2023 22:18

That fucking clock. Like the Sword of Damocles.

Who cares what a load of randoms think? It’s always ‘closer than its ever been’ it never bloody moves backwards ( actually l think it did once). It’s been ‘closer than it’s ever been since’ l was at school in the 80’s

Yeah, we know fuck all after all😂

Or perhaps we just don’t pay attention to a dumb clock that’s been ticking away all our lives.

It's 'The' Doomsday Clock. It's symbolic of the likelihood and closeness to a human-made global catastrophe in the form of nuclear war. It's administrated by The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists; as in people who know what they're on about and aren't concerned only with the humous being chilled, the chocolate fair trade and fresh batteries in the vibrator like the blasé types on here who take pleasure in telling you you're stupid to worry about it.

That said, and with all respect to you, if you didn't know what it was before getting worked up and worried about an impending nuclear war then I think you'd do well to try and put it out of your mind. They're right to say there is nothing you can do about it because there isn't so please do just try and get on with life and be happy.

And hope you're right underneath it when the wind blows.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 28/03/2023 22:24

‘The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists’

Not like they have a vested interest in keeping it ticking away…

I don't think it's going to be MAD, mutually assured destruction. I do think there will be some nukes at some point.

Countries that have bunkers as standard in their cellars are advising their citizens to consider them, Russia are for starters.

Countries like ours without bunkers in our homed are trying to keep their population calm.

There isn't anything practical we can do.

Do you have anything to back that up?

Personally I think it is vanishingly unlikely nukes will be used anytime soon

Yeah, and exactly what are our government doing to keep us calm?

BertaHoon · 28/03/2023 22:26

How nice. Thank you for your considered and intelligent opinion. I’m now asking for that post to be delisted.

They're testing an emergency messaging/broadcasting system next month.

That'll keep you calm . . . . if not make you question why.

There's a surprise.

Can't handle criticism. Weak.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 28/03/2023 22:30

😂loads of other countries have these. Britain is just behind as usual. I’d be amazed if our shit 5G can actually cope with it.

Have you tried getting a signal in remote parts of the country?

BertaHoon · 28/03/2023 22:30

Our country is full of underground tunnels.

We may not have designated bunkers as such, but there is plenty going on underground.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 28/03/2023 22:31

Criticism🤔

I’d say they were insults. And MN appeared to agree.😂

Reported for scaremongering? Really?

IClaudine · 28/03/2023 22:33

There have been a few of these type of threads over the past few months. Almost always posted by and often commented on by people who have recently joined MN or have recently name changed.

Wonder why?🤔

I've seen scarier Scooby Doo episodes.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 28/03/2023 22:37

There’s a village near me where it’s impossible to get a signal.

They’ll just have to guess when the 4 minute warning hits.

Are people seriously putting Belarus missiles and government warnings together? It’s laughable. This government couldn’t send a text out. They can’t even get the bloody trains to run on time.

Workinghardeveryday · 28/03/2023 22:38

Well, I was scared before, after reading this I am shitting myself

HereComesMaleficent · 28/03/2023 22:40

Nobody is going to long range nuke anyone. To be honest I'd be surprised if the Soviet rust bucket nukes they own even took off.

Short range, yeah maybe. I mean I wouldn't want to be living within about 1000miles of Russia.

Were about 3500 so selfishly, we will be alright if Putin goes mental.

MysteriesOfTheOrganism · 28/03/2023 22:43

No, I'm not particularly worried. Nuclear war has been a present threat since the late 1940s. Sometimes it seems more likely, other times less so. Right now with the war in Ukraine going badly for Putin there's a heightened risk, but realistically I don't see it happening.

mixedrecycling · 28/03/2023 22:43

Consequences of nuclear war are explored here What If Putin Goes Nuclear? | All 4 (channel4.com)

It isn't mutually assured destruction. Not good, of course. But not inevitable horrendous death for everyone.

Weirdly, the Chernobyl disaster has been a useful model for the consequences. Areas of extreme contamination, but limited illness for people in the area of they move out of that zone.
