*trigger warning* Nuclear War - Is it more likely than you thought?

dreamofalightahead · 28/03/2023 20:47

Weeks ago I would've said, no, very unlikely to ever happen at all. Nobody wins, etc etc

Recent events, none I can even pinpoint, give me a different feel and I suddenly think it's more likely to happen soon than I did weeks ago

What does everyone else think?

There is a film called Threads. It came out in 1984. It's set in Sheffield. And it's about the aftermath of nuclear war.

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 28/03/2023 21:24

Teen of the 80s too.

We were made to watch horrific fall out films and it was pretty scary. It definitely felt worse than now

There were many films and songs made at the
Time too so it certainly was felt in all quarters.

soundsofthesixties · 28/03/2023 21:24

I remember the nuclear threat in the 60s. It's the closest we've ever been to a nuclear war, that was scary, I was a teenager at the time.

I've seen it Sad just awful...

Well the nuclear bit, rest of the film is a bit boring

I think it is as likely now as it's ever been - next to no chance but not impossible.

It's extremely unlikely there will be a nuclear war but if there is, I just hope we get enough warning for me to get my family into a big city so we will be vaporised.

IncompleteSenten · 28/03/2023 21:32

We were shown that film at school. Scared the shit out of us.

Eyesopenwideawake · 28/03/2023 21:34

The Russian nuclear arsenal is old and badly maintained. They know it, the west knows it. If they try a tactical in Ukraine, they will be overrun by Nato with non-nuclear force within days.

Reggiebo · 28/03/2023 21:34

Do any of you remember the advice...what to do when the 4 minute warning came...first take off a door...now I don't know about you but it would take me 4 mins to find a suitable screw driver..maybe that was to keep you busy .

namechangeforthisbleep · 28/03/2023 21:36

Only because everyone on here keeps posting about it and giving me the colly wobbles

IncompleteSenten · 28/03/2023 21:36

I believe the advice was bend over, put your head between your legs and kiss your arse goodbye.

dreamofalightahead · 28/03/2023 21:02

Problem is, for millions it won't be a quick end at all. It'll be slow and painful

Being in the initial blast is like being shot, you won't register it. But to die burning, to die of starvation and fallout pollution... that's another matter entirely

It’s not all that likely OP.

I think you either have to try not to think about it, or join some organisation that you feel does something useful to mitigate the nuclear threat and try and do your little bit for that.

Also, we’ve been so lucky so far, people in so many parts of the world have not - not nuclear war, but horrendous wars and famines and natural disasters. So many people would give anything to be in our shoes. It helps me sometimes to remember I’m lucky.

Not much can be achieved by worrying about it so life goes on

It all means nothing, we have our own nukes, we're a major NATO member. A strike on the UK immediately becomes MAD

What if Russia Nuke us and then the rest of the NATO members with nukes actually think 'you know what, we'll leave it there. We won't retaliate. Rather have a tiny chance of surviving thanks'

We have our own nukes on subs and I'm sure you can imagine where their focus has been recently.

Even if (absolutely and totally massive if) the US and France shrugged their shoulders and didn't press their big red buttons Poo-tin knows damn well he'd be missing some major cities.

Then the rest of NATO would pour all their conventional forces into Ukraine and they wouldn't be thinking about stopping at the Russian border while combined NATO air forces took out everything that looked mildly threatening across Russia until they were convinced it would happen to anyone else.

It would be horrific, nobody wants that. Especially not Russia.

Are you just trying to ramp up the fear like Poo-tin?

Whoiscomingtosaveyou · 28/03/2023 21:44

When your number’s up, it’s up. No point in worrying about it. 🤷‍♀️

Whu · 28/03/2023 21:44

How can you state recent events have made you feel like this from a period of the last few weeks but yet you can’t pinpoint anything?!
That seems a bit odd to me. If I had seen something that had impacted me in such a way that I now felt nuclear war was on the cards I think I would remember what had led me to that thought pattern.

FWIW, no I don’t think it’s that likely and if it does happen there is nothing I can do about it so not worth headspace.

Furries · 28/03/2023 21:49

Have you joined MN to ask this? Or have you name-changed?

No, I’m not worried. And threads like these aren’t going to make me worry either.

I am looking forward to seeing where one of Putin’s body doubles pops up next on a walkabout 🤣. That must be the worst job in the world, can you imagine the annual appraisal?

tillytoodles1 · 28/03/2023 21:49

I really don't care because I have no control over it.

Livelovebehappy · 28/03/2023 22:00

IMO, the UK is shouting from the roof tops about how many weapons we are sending to UKraine, which is just putting a very large target on our backs. Why do we always have to shout the loudest, whilst other countries just discreetly and quietly get on with helping them without feeling they need to summarise everything they’re doing. Also, did anyone else have suspicions about this emergency siren that we are going to start receiving to our phones from late April, to flag to us any dangerous situations? The government say it’s just to let us know if floods etc, but the cynic in me thinks the sole purpose is to alert us to imminent nuclear threats. Not that the majority of us can do anything about the warning anyway.

Furries · 28/03/2023 22:02

The emergency alert system has been in the pipeline/planning for ages. So no, I don’t find it suspicious.

dreamofalightahead · 28/03/2023 22:03

@Livelovebehappy I'm petrified of nuclear war but to be honest, those text alerts have been with my cousins for about 8+ years in Canada. They aren't new

I'm no politician or knowledgable person. But I suppose if I must specify it's because Russia are cross at us sending over specific types of weapons to Ukraine

OP posts:
Eyesopenwideawake · 28/03/2023 22:04

@Livelovebehappy I was in the US a couple of weeks ago and the consensus there was "Why is it only us that are financing and equipping Ukraine? Why aren't other countries doing anything?"

The UK gov. is shouting because it distracts from sending asylum seekers to Rwanda or imprisoning child refugees...

I made a huge point by adding 'trigger warning' as the very first thing in my title. Why are you reporting me when it's clear what the thread is about?
