I think there was a thread along these lines a few months ago but I couldn't find it so I thought I'd start another one.

Here are a few of the names that my friends' parents were called when I was growing up that I can't imagine anyone ever calling a baby........

Elaine
Yvonne
Jackie
Sheila
Pat
Pauline
Tina
Joan

Mark
Paul
Ray
Nigel
Alan
Ken
Neville
Brian

I also thought about highly unlikely names for baby twins in 2023 and came up with a few....

Malcolm and Wendy
Jason and Sandra
Russell and Paula
Gary and Judith

Any others?

With you on most of these OP, but “Paul”? I know lots of Pauls under 10!

I’d like Beryl to come back, in the same way that Elsie did.

Stephanie
Geoffrey

DS2 (3) has a friend in his nursery class called Stephanie. Was a bit of a surprise, mostly because he mispronounced it and I thought he was calling her Destiny for about 3 months!

Names of some of the kids in my year (left school in 1990). I can’t see any being chosen for babies in 2023 but I do like some of them.

DD has a 4 yr old Valerie in her nursery class!

Clare or Claire
Never taught one or heard of one and it never gets mentioned.

It's a family middle name now but my auntie was a Claire/Clara depending on the country she was living in at the time.

I know an 11 year old Mark and Stanley and a Tim who's 9 (but it is short for a Nigerian name, not Timothy).

TheMoth · 26/03/2023 23:02

I last taught a Claire about v 15 years ago.
Never taught a Clive. Or a Cliff. Or a gareth. Or a Gary or a Wendy. Or a Pamela.

WillowtreeHouse · 26/03/2023 23:03

I met a baby Susan a couple of weeks ago and she was the cutest wee baby I've ever seen. I think it's a really pretty name and it suited her.

I actually know a baby Gaylord!

Beryl, Gladys, Bertha, Edna and Queenie for me. I can’t see them making a comeback!

Horace (my dear grandads name!)
Trevor
Malcolm

Danielle9891 · 26/03/2023 23:12

I loved my nanna to bits but her name was Alma and even she said it was old fashioned and hated it. My grandad was called Eric which apart from Simon Cowel I can't see anyone using it today.

I actually think names like Jaden, kayden etc will be very dated soon too, if not already.

my DS is 8 and has a Kevin in his class!

I know of loads of babies and toddlers with names from this thread. In particular, Audrey, Stanley, Edna and Ernest are names from this thread for which I actually know multiple small children with each name.

There's also lots of names here that have been on my own shortlist for my son and in my current pregnancy, that all my friends have thought are lovely (but my older relatives have thought I was mad for choosing).

EmotionalSupportWyrm · 26/03/2023 23:17

they'll all come back, and some of them within the next 10yrs.

I'm of the generation that has those names (1950's - one of my siblings names is on the list) and we would never have imagined names like William, Harry, Theo, Wilf, Isabella, Alice.... would ever be popular again, they were our grandparent's names, old people's names.

BrandyandGinger · 26/03/2023 23:19

I think Elaine and Claire are lovely names, I hope they come back. I feel like Eric and Mark are already back. And Malcolm is an awesome name.
I remember being genuinely surprised when I heard of a baby Elsie about 8 years ago, that was one name I thought was long gone.
