Baby names that will never make a come back

I think there was a thread along these lines a few months ago but I couldn't find it so I thought I'd start another one.

Here are a few of the names that my friends' parents were called when I was growing up that I can't imagine anyone ever calling a baby........

Elaine
Yvonne
Jackie
Sheila
Pat
Pauline
Tina
Joan

Mark
Paul
Ray
Nigel
Alan
Ken
Neville
Brian

I also thought about highly unlikely names for baby twins in 2023 and came up with a few....

Malcolm and Wendy
Jason and Sandra
Russell and Paula
Gary and Judith

Any others?

I’m amazed that among the early C20th names that are so popular now Gladys doesn’t seem to feature. I’d definitely give it to my daughter if I were young enough to have one now. As it is I had to settle for using it for the dog.

Hilda is a horrible name. If it can make a come back, anything can.

Herbert
Melvin
Eunice

My 15 year old has a friend called Denise 😂
I have a client at work with a Gary and Alan. A boy at playgroup is called Percy and my sisters 2 year old is Alma Bernadette

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 26/03/2023 22:15

Well who's to say. 15 years ago I wouldn't have thought Arthur would have ever came back. To me there's nothing appealing about it. Its not even one of those names where I could Its so horrible that's its spilled over into adorable like Percy or Norman. I imagine how cute a baby Norman would be.😂.

Viviennemary · 26/03/2023 22:17

Tracey
Sharon
Vera

Godfrey
Walter

I like Veronica but I can't see it making a comeback.

NortieTortie · 26/03/2023 22:17

I know a few Percys (0 over 3)
And Elaines (0 over 6)
And two young Pauls. (under 10)

Timothy
Eric
Gaye

I like the name Timothy.

I know a young Jean.

Gaylord
Percy
Jolyon
Ethel
Beryl

I know 3 x Percy under 10.

Mark, Paul will come back
Ken will rise with the grandad names (Stanley etc)

I reckon all of the girls' names could have a revival, though not necessarily to the same degree.

Eunice is already back. As is my (deeply unfashionable when I was a child) name - Vera. A nurse at the local surgery congratulated me on my amazingly forward thinking parents!

Siobhan (my own name), there was 3 other girls called Siobhan in my class in school (went to a Catholic school in London) but I don't think I've ever met anyone younger than me with the name.

I'm also Siobhan, and there were 2 others in my year, also a Catholic school in London. I've never met anyone younger than me with the name either. I'm 39. Can't imagine it'll make a comeback!

TruJay · 26/03/2023 22:20

I’ve seen the first 5 of your boys names in the last 5 years, although with slight variation in spelling,

Marc instead of Mark
Paul
Ray
Nigel
Allan instead of Alan

In the last few years I’ve also heard Ethel, Audrey, Sylvie and Dean.

One of the names mentioned on this thread is DH’s name and I can’t imagine choosing it for a baby even back then (80s) 😁

IHateLegDay · 26/03/2023 22:21

I have to say, I've not come across a baby Michelle since the 90s.

Beelezebub · 26/03/2023 22:21

Mervin

pinkySilver · 26/03/2023 22:23

Two friends have had babies called Claire. I was pleased to see it coming back.
Also June, Daphne, Penny, Ronnie, Brian in my immediate circle.

ThreeFeetTall · 26/03/2023 22:24

Bertha
Norma

Ray is already back.
Met a baby Herbert the other day, it suited him

slowquickstep · 26/03/2023 22:26

Hopefully Chardonnay will never make a come back

bakewellbride · 26/03/2023 22:27

I disagree with you on Yvonne op. To me it kind of has the same 'older vibe' as iris, mable, Maeve etc and they've all made a big come back.

I heard a little Stephanie being called in Asda a few weeks ago. She looked about 2.

TruJay · 26/03/2023 22:29

@VivaciousRadish I really wanted to call ds Colin, had absolutely no idea where it came from and everyone thought I was mad. Now I play along with the whole ‘oh remember that mad moment where you wanted to call ds Colin’ but really I still love it 😁

I do love his actual name and always have and prefer it over Colin 100 times over but he really would have made a cracking Colin. He’s such an old soul and has certainly been here before (he’s 13 now)

maddiemookins16mum · 26/03/2023 22:32

25 years ago if anyone had suggested calling their baby girls

Dot
Florence
Ruby
Mabel

they’ve probably been considered very unusual and out of fashion.

Names make a come back.

fyn · 26/03/2023 22:09

Maud and Percy were on our shortlist for our 4 month old 😂

That’s the names of my grandparents. 😊

ramanw · 26/03/2023 22:33

Dierdre

Sally090807 · 26/03/2023 22:33

I can’t imagine Mildred ever coming back in fashion.
