I've just seen a "butter board" on another thread and feel a bit sick? Who thought smashing butter all over a bit of wood might be appetising? 🤢

Also hate boba tea. Vile little bubbles of pus. Yuk

I love salted caramel and avocados.
I don't get the fuss about Italian food. Why is it so revered (and so common, although I get that it's v.cheap to make)?
If I go out for a meal I want something that I can't do at home...not a bowl of pasta with some sauce that probably came out of a jar on it.
There's a swanky new Italian place in London called Eataly that is part very expensive deli/supermarket and also has five or.six restaurants in it.
We went recently with friends and I had a carbonara that was disgusting. The cheese could have been Kraft slices melted down.
Give me some decent Asian food any day.

I detest Halloumi. Realise it’s not new, but right now it seems to be everywhere , sort of lazy vegetarian.
And for goodness sake, don’t dip it in batter and serve is as ‘halloumi chips’ . 🤢Yes, I am in Scotland.

FrancescaContini · 26/03/2023 08:54

“Vegan” food that’s just UPF in a box. Look at the ingredients 😱

Riverlee · 26/03/2023 08:55

Soopermum1 · 26/03/2023 00:11

Skin on chips and crisps. If I'm buying chips, I don't have an eye on any health benefits

That made me laugh, but so true.

southlondoner02 · 26/03/2023 08:59

Truffle oil on chips - just ruins chips. Agree with food on boards/ slates/ shoes - always loved the We Want Plates twitter account although I don't think they're going anymore.

Beans and chips in separate pots is just infantilising- fine for little kids who don't like food touching, unnecessary for adults. I always assume it's a way to give smaller potions

Also putting calorie content on all dishes, puts me right off.

Isn’t that law now, that if you employ over so many people, you have to list the calorie content? Considering I’ve had different portion sizes of the same dish in the same restaurant, not sure how accurate this is.

namechangeforthisbleep · 26/03/2023 08:25

I mean, there is macaroni AND cheese in it sooooo

But the dish is called “ Macaroni cheese”!

WandaWonder · 26/03/2023 09:15

Real truffle tastes like soggy cardboard

Lobster has no flavour same with crab although a little better

Caviar is just weird

And I don't want food stacked on top of each or minuscule so 99% of the food I see on masterchef doesn't really work for me or foam, cubed or twist-ed

So I guess if people genuinely like specific things fine i am not commenting it is the automatic having to like something I don't get, I am sure there are people who genuinely love the taste of caviar I think it's awful

Imicola · 26/03/2023 09:25

Loaded anything...

LennyCrabbitz · 26/03/2023 10:05

Going to have to Google matcha 🍵 although I see it has an emoji

Not really a food trend, but why do folk say "tumeric" when it's "turmeric"? Gets on my wick.

Cherubiminal · 26/03/2023 10:34

Sweet potatoes...in any form, if you say you don't like them mashed then someone always says "but have you tried sp chips"...it's almost as if it's compulsory to like them, thankfully that trend seems to be waining.

Ostryga · 26/03/2023 10:40

Scallops with cauliflower purée and a raisin dressing. It was nice the first time I ate it 20 years ago but now just makes me think the chef is lazy.

Smash burgers are actually delicious! With a proper one the ‘smashing’ into a hot pan leaves a wonderful lacy crusted bottom and proper Maillard reaction. Squashing them before they touch a hot pan just leave a thin burger with no flavour.

Baldieheid · 26/03/2023 10:41

Sweet potato chips are an abomination. Sweet potatoes are soft. They don't crisp up, not in my experience. I love them but asking them to be good chips is like asking a dog to miaow. It's not what they do!

barelyfunctional · 26/03/2023 10:51

I’m not sure people are understanding what ‘trend’ means. Food from other cultures isn’t a ‘trend’!

While the obsessive sourdough baking became a trend over lockdown, sourdough is an ancient method of baking bread, there are bakeries that have kept the same sourdough starter going for 100+ years.

Bloody biscoff biscuits in everything!

Wash your mouth out 😂 I love it!!!

Squirrelsnut · 26/03/2023 11:37

@WeAreTheHeroes
Thank you!! Tumeric sounds like a disease. Stop it, people!!

RampantIvy · 26/03/2023 11:42

I like spicy food, but some chefs seem to be obsessed with adding chillis to everything. I'm looking at you Jamie Oliver.
Truffles are vile. Adding truffle oil to dishes just ruins them for me.

I have never come across a smashed burger, but @Ostryga makes them sound delicious.

I agree about the trend for making all vegetarian food vegan. It must be pretty easy to add cheese to a dish that is vegan so it could still be an option on a menu.

I have never heard of some of the other trends on this thread so I am off to google.

howaboutchocolate · 26/03/2023 11:55

Miso in places it doesn't belong.

Almost all vegetarian and vegan food now being made with fake meat instead of vegetables, which usually means soya protein.

Soya flour being added to all bread and baked goods to make them softer.

(I have a soya allergy and it's infuriating!)

Anon9898 · 26/03/2023 13:34

Avacado. Why?

Also pistachio everything. No thanks

Crayfishforyou · 26/03/2023 13:45

Bubble tea, it’s frogspawn
anything with avocados
anything served on a wooden ‘platter’
normal food that is served in bowls
vegan ‘cheese’, ‘meat’ ‘dairy’. It is none of those things.

jamdodgers · 26/03/2023 18:05

Salted caramel, whyyyy? I don't like normal caramel though to be fair. Unless it's in a millionaires shortbread 😍

Love avocados but not on toast! Slimy and yuck. I like them chopped with a little salt, pepper and vinaigrette with salad.

Halloumi, I love cheese but don't get why anyone wants chewy salty cheese deep fried or grilled!

White enamelled tin dishes, reminds me of 70s dentist when an extracted tooth would be put in one. Bleurgh.

Delphinium20 · 26/03/2023 19:50

"Dirty" spiced foods (typically dirty rice) come from Louisiana Cajun cooking that is a term that is hundreds of years old. It's cooking rice with whatever is at hand because your family is poor. The rice gets "dirty" from the mix of ingredients.

It's maybe become a trend but I kinda wish the restaurants who serve it would kindly note its historical origins. It's not new.
