What food trends can't you stand?

I've just seen a "butter board" on another thread and feel a bit sick? Who thought smashing butter all over a bit of wood might be appetising? 🤢

Also hate boba tea. Vile little bubbles of pus. Yuk

Cadburysucks · 26/03/2023 00:09

Avocado toast sounds disgusting to me.

Soopermum1 · 26/03/2023 00:11

Skin on chips and crisps. If I'm buying chips, I don't have an eye on any health benefits

Cadburysucks · 26/03/2023 00:14

Also putting calorie content on all dishes, puts me right off.

PlateBilledDuckyPerson · 26/03/2023 00:19

Crappy burgers taking up significant chunks every restaurant menu.

Greasy burger from burger van on cold day ✅.

Foot high impossible to eat sensibly 'burger' incorporating brioche or other inappropriate bread semi-deconstructed with ten random ingredients skewered on a dowel rod ❌

CockSpadget · 26/03/2023 00:21

Those bloody ridiculous freakshakes. What an absolute waste of ingredients, I can’t believe anyone actually eats/drinks the whole thing.

“Mac ‘n cheese”
(or even ‘macaroni and cheese’.)

No, it’s “macaroni cheese”, there’s no ‘and’ in it.

And when did this become the latest food trend? I see it everywhere now.

Disclaimer, I actually like macaroni cheese.

Yes, this especially raises my hackles.

Also I'm not sure how many more times I'm willing to listen to my kids call coleslaw "slaw" before I discuss formal estrangement with them.

musicforthesoul · 26/03/2023 00:55

Brioche buns. Its next to impossible to get a burger out now with a normal bun, they're all ruined by brioche.

Precipice · 26/03/2023 02:16

Small plates or tapas style main-meals. They'd be fine as a starter or offered in a choice of smaller or larger portion, but not when the menu is set up so you need 2 or 3, with the cost of one in itself about 2/3 what you'd expect a normal size portion to be, so it just comes out expensive.

Service charges being put on your bill.

Me too, gives me the rage!!

EddieSteady · 26/03/2023 02:58

Grazing tables. Especially sweet ones.

sashh · 26/03/2023 03:10

'Deconstructed' anything.

It seems to have gone now. There are reasons some foods go well together and serving a cottage pie on three different plates isn't 'deconstructed' you just didn't assemble it.

Snowdrop90 · 25/03/2023 21:49

Not a food but matcha tea / coffee. Pretty sure 95% of those drinking it can’t stand it either

It comes in ice cream too. My daughter loves that and the bubble tea. It’s horrible.

I agree with the plates unless you are at a carvery, at my local they actually have plates on the wall so you can see how big the plate is and then it is up to you to pile it is high as you want.

KohlaParasaurus · 26/03/2023 04:17

Bread being served with olive oil and balsamic vinegar (Continental! Sophisticated! So Much Healthier!) to dab it in rather than butter to spread on it is a trend I'm glad to see the back of. I'd rather have a butter board.

Coffee that has the texture and nutritional profile of pudding. Chai anything.

Shards of mouth-ripping hard toffee or biscuit in chocolate. (But I love salted chocolate.)

Kefir and kombucha.

Ha! I've got a friend who has an issue with 'slaw' if we're eating out and the server says "would you like slaw with that" he always says "coleslaw? yes please".

torquewench · 26/03/2023 05:06

Tayto chocolate with cheese and onion flavour crisps in it 🤢

I had to Google this as my first thought was that you must be engaging in some particularly sick trolling. WTF? How did anyone even come up with this concept?

Wobblytrees · 26/03/2023 08:04

Goldbar · 25/03/2023 22:54

I agree on sharing plates or indeed any food which you're intended to share with someone else in a restaurant. Talk about how to turn a nice meal out into something very stressful as you have to navigate around the social niceties. Should men get more because they are bigger? Does it look petty to halve whatever it is down the middle and take your share at the outset? If you eat more quickly than the other person, can you take more than half? It's just unnecessary stress that gets in the way of enjoying the meal.

This. In spades. I bloody hate sharing food. I like to know how much I have!

EspeciallyDedicated · 26/03/2023 08:18

I'm happy doing a sharing plate with DH, we don't split at the outset but take turns with each item or offer each other the majority of the thing we know they like better. Not with anyone else though.

Equally I prefer baked beams and coleslaw in little pots as its easier for me to give him my beans and him to give me his coleslaw without them contaminating the other food on our plates. No to chips in buckets and baskets though.

I mean, there is macaroni AND cheese in it sooooo

LadyHester · 25/03/2023 21:58

Not exactly a food trend, but restaurants where the waiting staff ask ‘Have you eaten with us before?’ and then proceed to explain the Concept at tremendous length, which basically boils down to the menu being comprised of food items which you can order in order to satisfy hunger.
Phew, glad to get that sorted.

😂😂😂😂

Deathraystare · 26/03/2023 08:25

@LadyHester

Wow thanks for explaining the concept for us!!!

Laughable innit? Go to restaurant. Get seated. Order food. Eat food. Now I know!

12BottlesOfVintageChampagne · 26/03/2023 08:29

Ugh, everything is "truffled" at the moment and I can't bear it. The fake truffle flavouring used to achieve this smells like gas to me and if I accidentally put it in my mouth (truffled fries - just WHY?!) then makes me heave. Stop putting it in everything!!!

speakout · 26/03/2023 08:34

Sweet food that is salted- I know a certain amount of salt is needed in some desserts and confections, but I don't want salted caramel/chocolate ice cream, yogurt- OH bought a chocolate bar yesterday with big lumps of rock salt on top.

IHeartGeneHunt · 26/03/2023 08:42

Food on boards and slates. Burgers you can't get your mouth around because they're too big.
I love matcha latte and salted caramel though.
