NC’d for this as very outing but been here a long time!!

We are going on holiday on Monday to a large holiday home, we have invited 17 people, a mix from both mine and DH’s side, including both sets of grandparents…

It seemed like a fun and nice thing to do at the time but the closer we are getting the more I’m starting to think oh shit, what have we done!!!!

In the mix we have a some very strong feminists, A no shits given, straight talking lady with a slight alcohol problem, a camp chain smoking gay person, an autistic child, a grandad with a knack for inappropriate jokes and a couple with no sense of humour who like to talk about the past all the time and hate things being out of their control.

I love them all dearly but we are going to live to regret this for the rest of our lives aren’t we?!

You need to add one more person, a mild mannered old lady, a finicky Belgian or an eccentric bible-belt American, because what you have set up there is a classic murder mystery. You're going to need the extra detective to solve the case when people start being picked off one by one. Also, keep your fingers crossed that you're not one of the ones to be murdered near the start.

Seriously? I expect people to keep their disagreements civil. I've tried my best to holler at teach my children that. I grew up in household of people arguing sharply (nasty, shouting, loud) about religion, politics, food, and I've no tolerance for people being intolerant of each other on those & most issues.

Are you actually planning big group activities or can people sort of drift together & drift apart all weekend?

Love it we done it with 20 several times now same family mix and was absolutely brilliant and thats why we have continued to do it every year. It will only turn wrong if yoy think negative from the start..Have fun

As long as the autistic child is happy & comfortable it sounds like a great mix to me! Big groups of strong & unique characters are my kind of thing!

I do hope you'll update afterwards with some anecdotes. It sounds like an ideal cross-section for a Citizen's Council to debate public policy but not exactly a recipe for a relaxing holiday. Perhaps appoint the autistic child (depending on age) as the mediator: they will view everything with strict logic, a sense of justice and zero tolerance for any unpleasantless if they are anything like my one. I swear they could solve just about any international conflict so this would be a walk in the park.

It could well end up being both hilarious and fabulous though, provided all of these people are respectful which I assume they are or you wouldn't have invited them! It can be very interesting and refreshing getting to know people who are very different to you.

We did similar years ago - a couple of my wife’s friends are feminists (and both vegans), I was warned not to approach certain topics as I’d likely have my ear chewed off.

We actually had the best time debating some interesting topics - completely unexpected, I thought I’d end up plotting a murder but had a great experience.

If topics veer into ‘batshit crazy’ territory (which happened a few times) then just try and steer it to something more neutral.

It will be great. Worst case just go to bed early with a good book. Plus it sounds like where you are staying will be big enough to have places to escape to. You are brave though! 😁
