Things that are socially acceptable but you wish they were not

I feel like a bit of a man. For me:

Men pissing by the side of the road. I have see this twice in the past few days, yet there were public loos close by. If a woman did this people would question her sanity, or at the very least think she was undignified yet for men it's considered normal.

Men going shirtless in public. Do what you like in your own garden, but why walk down the high street etc without a shirt. It's never that hot in England - in fact some much hotter climates actually have dignity laws that prohibit both men and women from even showing their arms or legs. Plus you know, sun burn.

Smoking. I hate walking behind someone who is smoking, it blows back in the face of the person behind and gives me a headache. It's unhealthy, expensive and should just be banged in public full stop imo.

You can get little silicone covers

Why should she?! Mine are the same and there’s no chance I’d be sticking silicone to my tits to please some prude. They’re nipples, everyone has them.

Really??? In todays world that's what make you worried about humanity

Yes. The cruelty, complete lack of empathy and compassion shown for other species, a greedy human supremacist entitlement... I think these things are at the absolute heart of the greatest crises facing our lives, not to mention the life of the whole bloody world.

If you can't understand that... well, your loss. But also kind of everybody's.

What makes you despair of humanity out of interest?

Where's the 'like' button 😊

Its the dog owner equivalent of parents who will never allow their DCs to have screens, a dummy or sweet snacks 😂

I mean 'parents to be'

People who have 3+ kids then moan that they’re poor/tired/life is so hard. What did you expect? Do a bit of research before undertaking the biggest decision of your life.

I know of people in that category who were financially well off then unforeseen events have meant they're living in reduced financial circumstances, and with little or no support. Death, divorce, failing business and bankruptcy.

I think you should take all those into account when planning. I always think, could I support myself if my husband died? If we divorced? If I got made redundant or got cancer? If the answer is no, don’t make any decisions that will make your financial situation even riskier than it is currently. It’s easy for me to say tho as I’ve never wanted children though so I don’t “get” wanting something to the point that you’d financially leave yourself very vulnerable in order to get it.

I can totally relate!! I had the misfortune of living next door to someone like that. They endlessly had parties, always to 6am - EVERY bank holiday plus (of course) their 4 birthdays... not once did it occur to them that not everyone has bank holidays off work!!! And even if I did - why would I want to stay up to 6am?

I can't fathom how it's socially acceptable either - everyone on the street whispered to each other that they were really upset about it, but no-one (except me) would do anything (it wasn't just parties they did to the neighbourhood so I guess the others just didn't want the trouble).

I think they see people partying till all hours on the TV and they think that's how they're supposed to live! Some kind of mark of success? The bigger the parties the better than the rest of us they are? #instagram culture ftw!!!

Honestly, the only way to make it stop is to move (which half the street ended up doing).

Oh, I hear you. I often feel the same even if its not a party until 6am.

People who say ‘I can’t stay long cos I have to get back for the dog’ - what’s gonna happen to the dog if you’re out for 5 instead of 4 hours or get it looked after esp if you’ve had several weeks’ notice of an event.

What happens if you are desperate needing a loo and there is no loo?

Stewball01 · 26/03/2023 17:40

I agree with everybody especially the smokers.

Marrying first cousins.

Is marriage with that level of consanguinity legal in the UK? I always thought that second cousins was the closest one could be.

JudgeJ · 26/03/2023 18:26

People tailgating you through urban areas because you are sticking to the speed limit, you driving that close will not make me break the law, ( I also know the spots where the police bike/cam van parks, so I am doing you a favour

I too know a few popular spots where the cameras lurk, one person was tail-gating me so I slowed right down and let him roar past me, just as we approached the spot, so hope he was caught.

failedbluecup · 26/03/2023 18:27

Parking in disabled spaces

Using spray whilst sitting at your desk.

failedbluecup · 26/03/2023 18:29

Daffodilwoman · 24/03/2023 18:44

Yes to all of the above.
As for mobile phones-urgh! Stop answering your phone during an appointment with me, it’s bloody rude. Should I just answer my personal phone during your appointment? I have been known to stop, look pointedly at my watch and tell the client ‘ you now have 10 minutes left.’

What business to you run?

Anyfeckinusername · 26/03/2023 18:54

Saying to single mothers "is your mum nearby, can she help?"
WHAT ABOUT THE DAD?

Because she asked and she might want to? My friend has them because she doesn't want everyone staring at her nipples, why do you care what others might want to do??

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 26/03/2023 19:40

@JudgeJ

It's completely legal in the UK

metro.co.uk/2018/08/01/can-marry-cousin-uk-family-members-illegal-marry-7785320/

I grew up knowing a married couple who were first cousins

They say if you're tailgated by one car, he's the problem, if there's more than one, you are problem.

What makes me despair of humanity is the fact that world leaders are still making decisions about environmental issues based on money. If we destroy the environment money will be totally irrelevant. My son asked me, why don't they make solar panels and electric cars free, then everyone would use them instead of burning fossil fuels? Because that wouldn't make people money. I actually despair. In my coastal area there have already been projections saying towns will be under water within 25 years and yet they just keep building new houses. It's like people are just sticking their fingers in their ears and going la la la. And they won't stop until it's too late and the water comes up to their door.

You can't predict every eventuality. I've known of a middle class family with five children who went from very affluent to bankruptcy. Another (3 children) where one parent (in their late 30s) had a terminal illness and part of the insurance money was used to make them comfortable in their final days and for general support (I believe, or at least they were able, to use some of the life insurance). Even divorce difficulties.

I totally agree and not to mention the damage to the environment that it causes and all the grain and water used to rear the animals while people are actually starving - it’s disgraceful. But there’s money to be made from it so it’s all kept quite hush hush “nothing to see here”.

eastegg · 26/03/2023 23:16

PalominoUK · 26/03/2023 20:09

They say if you're tailgated by one car, he's the problem, if there's more than one, you are problem.

If this was ever true, it’s out of date, certainly in particular areas where there are lots of 20mph zones. If you stick to 20 it’s very easy to get lots of people behind you wanting to go faster.

zviff · 27/03/2023 00:10

Do you feel the same way about women wearing overly revealing clothes or is that "different"?

zviff · 27/03/2023 00:12

Sure. But if you're just putting along in the passing lane, refusing to move over because "IM GOING 5 OVER THE SPEED LIMIT!!! WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT??!!!" I want you to gtfo of the way and let people use the lane for what it is intended for. Passing.

zviff · 27/03/2023 00:14

People that leave their dogs out after dinner/overnight. Every time their dog barks, they should be forces to listen to an entire Infant Annihilator album at full volume. While they're trying to sleep.

Going shopping in pyjamas, slippers and dressing gown. Always women. Never see blokes doing it

Yes this really irritates me. I can’t quite work out the argument against it though except it’s depressing and also somehow disrespectful to those around them who have bothered to get dressed.
