What is going on at the BBC right now?

What with the news breaking today ( 10/03/23) that Lineker is to step back from presenting Match of the Day and now Ian Wright is also not going to appear on the show in solidarity. They also have said that they will not air a David Attenborough (what the hell did he do/say that pushed their buttons) episode due to fears of a right-wing backlash. On top of that, Fiona Bruce has said that Stanley Johnson 'only' broke his wife's nose once (I mean just how many times is too many, I ask ye).

What the hell is going on at the BBC right now????

Sources:
David Attenborough being cancelled
Gary Lineker stepping back from MotD
Ian Wright standing by Gary
Fiona Bruce story

Just wondering if anyone can make sense of what is going on in the BBC at the moment.

@LakeTiticaca Do you only ever talk about your job? Or is it your job to spout shit about communities not welcoming refugees?

Dottymug · 10/03/2023 19:16

The point surely isn't whether GL is saintly, or not. The point is that he is being shut down for criticising the language used by the government, language that a Holocaust survivor also said reminded her of 30's Germany. GL isn't a newsreader and doesn't have to be impartial in his own time. He should be able to give his opinions on any matter he chooses -we all should. Insisting he apologise is outrageous and scary.

David Attenborough has NOT been cancelled.

Please get your facts straight.

Watered down, in case it upsets the Tory right wing climate deniers.

'He didn't compare it to the Holocaust. He compared it to 1930s Germany when Hitler was first in power and started using racist language towards Jews and introduced laws and policies against Jews. It was the pre cursor to the Holocaust'

We all know exactly what '1930s Germany' was a precursor to. That is the point. To post such offensive inflammatory crap is not ok.

I hope the BBC stick to their guns and show him, 'Wrighty' and Shearer the door. It's football ffs how can these highly privileged arseholes take themselves so seriously

Do you think 1930s Germany was the same as late 1930s and early 1940s…. If you do, then you’re a fool.

Do you think it’s okay for a Home Secretary to lie? Lie that there is an “invasion”? Lie that there are 100 million coming here (or billions in the Daily Mail)….?

What kind of image is the Home Secretary trying to conjure up…. She’s trying to conjure up the idea that asylum seekers are all one and the same and not in a good way.

That is the language that she is being called out on and quite right too. It’s nationalistic racism.

Artemisty · 10/03/2023 19:17

I think it would be helpful for some people on here to read the BBCs editorial guidelines

In fact it might be helpful for the BBC staffer who made the decision about GL etc to also read the editorial guidelines.

Solonge · 10/03/2023 19:09

He was quite rightly stating that the language used by our present criminal government is similar to that of the Nazi Germans. No one arrives illegally, there is no such thing. Legally anyone can claim asylum. It is however illegal to prevent people claiming asylum.
Funny that Braverman, Sunak and Patel’s parents all arrived as economic migrants. I dont wish for the vile Braverman to make inclusive statements such as ‘The British people want us…’ some do….the racists, the rest dont. The BBC havent said anything about the Tory poster girl, Fiona Bruce making allowances for Stanley Johnson breaking his wife’s nose by saying it only happened once! Bruce sits on the board of a charity for women suffering domestic abuse….where is the BBC ‘s horror!

Yes I agree. Did you mean to quote me or did you think I was someone else?

The guidelines say Audiences expect artists, writers and entertainers to have freedom to explore subjects from one perspective and to create content that reflects their own distinctive voice. It must be clear to audiences where personal views are being expressed

I think it was pretty obvious that GL was expressing his own views and not that of the BBC 🤣👍

Notaflippinclue · 10/03/2023 19:19

Dan Walker - I'm going to watch it for the first time in my life, just because I don't know what I'm missing.

PrincessScarlett · 10/03/2023 19:19

Agree, it's nothing to do with whether you like GL or not, whether you think he's overpaid. It's the fact he's spoken out against government policy (in support of an actual holocaust survivor who confronted Braverman and was brushed aside by her) and is now being censored and punished for not agreeing with our government by a supposedly impartial BBC.

Rhondaa · 10/03/2023 19:20

I loathe all this he didn't mention the Holocaust disingenuous rubbish. That was what he was alluding to.

I wonder if footballers both ex and current think the sun shines out of their own arses and they shouldn't be held accountable for nonsense they spout on Twatter?

I hope they get some young fresh talent on and put the dinosaurs out to pasture.

GPTec1 · 10/03/2023 19:20

@Believeitornot Yep Braverman and the other right wingers in the Tory party don't like any form of opposition, so seek to shut it down.

What happened in Germany in the late 20s and early 30s can happen anywhere, papers like the Mail supported Hitler back then.

itsgettingweird · 10/03/2023 19:11

Not sure what's going on beyond them showing they aren't really impartial.

Sounds ironic but if they cancel people for having opinions outside of their job then it's very clear they aren't allowing any opinions that aren't right wing as their leadership are mates with Tories.

Makes me so angry tbh.

Its a good point. If he had said or implied he agreed with the governments refugee policies, would the BBC tell him off for not being impartial? No, there wouldnt be any peep from them

ColdHandsHotHead · 10/03/2023 19:22

The Tories are tightening their grip on the media, ahead of the next general election, of course.

They're hoping we've all got short memories.

Nobody who lost someone dear to think during a lockdown will forget, though.

ColdHandsHotHead · 10/03/2023 19:23

They’d probably appoint him as the next BBC Chairman!

If you see that language being used now then that’s a klaxon that the Government is not compassionate and let’s not pretend otherwise.

Do you think it’s appropriate for a Home Secretary to lie about invasions and 100 million refugees? Have you noticed that they don’t tell you the stories of refugees and just conjure up certain images….

if you spot nationalism and fascism, then be clear, it never takes you to a good place and should be called out.

Rhondaa · 10/03/2023 19:23

'Are you against this survivor having a platform?'

There are plenty more survivors that have been horrified by his glib, attention seeking comments. '1930s Germany' I mean fgs I know footballers aren't renowned for their intelligence but even so. Just stfu and get off sm Lineker.

Dan Walker doesn't work for the BBC any more.

Moonicorn · 10/03/2023 19:24

It’s confusing because the content produced by the BBC is very woke - lots of ‘sex positivity’ programmes, mental health, gender identity, disability.

I think it’s more that the people who watch MOTD are more likely to be centre or right of centre and disagree with Gary 🤷🏼‍♀️

As for the Attenborough thing. Just weird.

Labour didn't put their own people in

2003
Former BBC executive Will Wyatt has admitted he was the insider who nearly scuppered Greg Dyke's campaign to become director general by leaking details of his Labour party donations to the Times.

The stories, printed four years ago, sparked a political row and a war of words in the broadsheet between pro and anti-Dyke supporters. However, it did not stop Mr Dyke taking the top job at the corporation.

Moonicorn · 10/03/2023 19:26

And disagreeing with Lineker is not ‘right wing’. I’m fed up of anything other than complete unquestioning agreement with the standard hard left approach being labelled ‘right wing’.

Frankly when you do that you piss people off so much you drive them to actually being it 🤷🏼‍♀️

It's got absolutely nothing to do with who watches MOTD!

I totally agree with Lineker, so do millions of others.
