What is going on at the BBC right now?

What with the news breaking today ( 10/03/23) that Lineker is to step back from presenting Match of the Day and now Ian Wright is also not going to appear on the show in solidarity. They also have said that they will not air a David Attenborough (what the hell did he do/say that pushed their buttons) episode due to fears of a right-wing backlash. On top of that, Fiona Bruce has said that Stanley Johnson 'only' broke his wife's nose once (I mean just how many times is too many, I ask ye).

What the hell is going on at the BBC right now????

Sources:
David Attenborough being cancelled
Gary Lineker stepping back from MotD
Ian Wright standing by Gary
Fiona Bruce story

Just wondering if anyone can make sense of what is going on in the BBC at the moment.

It's quite easy to host refugees when you have millions and live in a huge house, they would hardly be sharing the sofa and kitchen space

So what if he has a big living space?

"Lord Attenborough’s highly anticipated new series, Wild Isles, looks at the beauty of nature in the British Isles."
The Guardian better watch out as well 😬

What does that mean? Its the Beeb thats arse licking the government.

MoonahSton · 10/03/2023 19:03

Why he hasn't stuck a "all views are my own" in his Twitter bio is beyond me. I thought that was a given when your workplace is high profile.

hay5689 · 10/03/2023 19:04

@Pandor but they've still all done it and will continue to do so in the future. The BBC will always serve government and we'll pay for it.

Completely agree. It's easy to say he spoke about it but he still took the money. Seems his principles only apply when he wants them too. I just can't feel sorry for him when he picks and chooses what he preaches about.

I’m sure he doesn’t need your pity.

he can comment, or not comment, on whatever he wants.

Even easier not to. Not so easy to offer much needed support to another parent of a child when yours is being treated for leukaemia. Money makes chuff all difference then.

Gary Lineker should remain impartial and do the job he is paid for, presenting the football. His tweet about comparing the illegal immigration to the national holocaust was insulting and uncalled for, but it seems the Jews are still fair game for taking potshots at.
Those who are shouting the loudest about letting all comers into the country are those least likely to be affected by suddenly having 200 twenty-something men dumped upon their community. It won't affect Gary is his nice gated community.
Gary, Ian Wright et al were all quite happy to pocket large sums of money on the back of the abused migrant workers in Qatar weren't they!!
One thing worse than a champagne socialist, a bloody hypocritical one!!

He didn't compare it to the Holocaust. He compared it to 1930s Germany when Hitler was first in power and started using racist language towards Jews and introduced laws and policies against Jews. It was the pre cursor to the Holocaust.

TheFairyCaravan · 10/03/2023 19:07

Alex Scott has, also, confirmed she won’t be presenting MOTD tomorrow.

Jermaine Jenas is currently presenting The One Show, but I hope he refuses to present it, too.

I think the bbc have vetoed that when their chairman arranged an 800k loan for the PM

exactly!!

People are either ignorant, stupid or being deliberately obtuse, by making such claims about Gary Linekar’s words.

The Nazis started off in the early 1930s as racists and then slid to the Holocaust. Fascism isn’t the sole preserve of the Nazis, but it’s the one that’s the most well known.

People need to educate themselves.

If labour win the next election they'll put their people in the BBC just as every political party in power has done for years. Round and round it goes and it's the perfect example of why we shouldn't have a tv channel funded with taxpayers money, time to abolish the tv licence and be done with this farce.

Labour didn't put their own people in.

Michael Grade was Chair of the BBC under Labour, a life long TV guy who was also a member of the Tory party....

No Govt should have anything to do with appointments, certainly not a personal mate of Joghnson, arranging £800k loans.

User15953798 · 10/03/2023 19:09

Hopefully MOTD will disappear from the BBC

MarshaBradyo · 10/03/2023 19:09

I thought Lineker had confirmed he’d present, has there been an update

Solonge · 10/03/2023 19:09

bellac11 · 10/03/2023 19:02

So what if he has a big living space?

He was quite rightly stating that the language used by our present criminal government is similar to that of the Nazi Germans. No one arrives illegally, there is no such thing. Legally anyone can claim asylum. It is however illegal to prevent people claiming asylum.
Funny that Braverman, Sunak and Patel’s parents all arrived as economic migrants. I dont wish for the vile Braverman to make inclusive statements such as ‘The British people want us…’ some do….the racists, the rest dont. The BBC havent said anything about the Tory poster girl, Fiona Bruce making allowances for Stanley Johnson breaking his wife’s nose by saying it only happened once! Bruce sits on the board of a charity for women suffering domestic abuse….where is the BBC ‘s horror!

If you mean doing his job then no it didn't.

But he's freelance. He didn't have to take that job. We knew for 4 years that the world cup was in Qatar. He could have taken a stand and turned it down. If he was under a contract and is supposed to remain impartial then that's what he should do.

The BBC have stood him down.

It's going to be Dan Walker who presents, I'd assume. It looks like the footballers will stand united.

itsgettingweird · 10/03/2023 19:11

Not sure what's going on beyond them showing they aren't really impartial.

Sounds ironic but if they cancel people for having opinions outside of their job then it's very clear they aren't allowing any opinions that aren't right wing as their leadership are mates with Tories.

Makes me so angry tbh.

Rhondaa · 10/03/2023 19:12

'He didn't compare it to the Holocaust. He compared it to 1930s Germany when Hitler was first in power and started using racist language towards Jews and introduced laws and policies against Jews. It was the pre cursor to the Holocaust'

We all know exactly what '1930s Germany' was a precursor to. That is the point. To post such offensive inflammatory crap is not ok.

I hope the BBC stick to their guns and show him, 'Wrighty' and Shearer the door. It's football ffs how can these highly privileged arseholes take themselves so seriously

Gary Lineker is a pain in the neck. He should not be using his high profile in order to promote his political views. So full of himself and totalky unrepentant i'm glad he is gone. Hope he dodoesn't ome back. He has been on the gravy train for far too long.

Support cancel culture do you?

Seventytwosunsetstrip · 10/03/2023 19:14

David Attenborough has NOT been cancelled.

Please get your facts straight.

FabledEasterEgg · 10/03/2023 19:15

FFS Gary Lineker wasn’t paid for his work at the World Cup directly by Qatar, unlike greedypants-desperateforaknighthood Beckham.
The BBC covered the tournament quite well in the circumstances, and there was discussion in their coverage of the migrant deaths building the stadiums, and the refusal to let captains wear the one love armbands.
This latest from the BBC is appalling, however. I presume Richard Sharp will also stand aside for showing inappropriate bias? Oh no, of course he won’t, he’s pro Tory.

Why did the bbc allow him his time to speak out then? That’s not impartial either.

GPTec1 · 10/03/2023 19:15

@Janiie Lineker tweeted what a survivor of the Holocaust said to Bravermans face.

Are you against this survivor having a platform?

Or should her views stay tucked away.
