What is going on at the BBC right now?

What with the news breaking today ( 10/03/23) that Lineker is to step back from presenting Match of the Day and now Ian Wright is also not going to appear on the show in solidarity. They also have said that they will not air a David Attenborough (what the hell did he do/say that pushed their buttons) episode due to fears of a right-wing backlash. On top of that, Fiona Bruce has said that Stanley Johnson 'only' broke his wife's nose once (I mean just how many times is too many, I ask ye).

What the hell is going on at the BBC right now????

Sources:
David Attenborough being cancelled
Gary Lineker stepping back from MotD
Ian Wright standing by Gary
Fiona Bruce story

Just wondering if anyone can make sense of what is going on in the BBC at the moment.

Hard working football presenter - 2 hours a week or whatever bloody hell saint Garys on £2 million salary, that's 12 times the prime ministers salary and 66 times a nurses. Good riddance.

What's going on with the BBC right now is that it's chairman, Richard Simon Sharp is a former banker who worked at JP Morgan for eight years, and then for 23 years at Goldman Sachs. He was an advisor to Boris Johnson during his tenure as London Mayor, and to Rishi Sunak as Chancellor. A damning parliamentary report accused him of breaching standards by failing to divulge publicly that he facilitated a substantial loan to Boris Johnson. In other words, murky goings on, as with the rest of our current sleazy overlords.

He hasn’t gone!

Gary Lineker giving voice to his concerns when the government is spouting fascist BS is an asset to this country. He is speaking out against policy that damages the most vulnerable. The idea that he is punishable by a national broadcaster for highlighting the need for decent treatment for those in the direst of straits is utterly wrong.

If labour win the next election they'll put their people in the BBC just as every political party in power has done for years. Round and round it goes and it's the perfect example of why we shouldn't have a tv channel funded with taxpayers money, time to abolish the tv licence and be done with this farce.

Gfplux · 10/03/2023 18:54

I totally support Lineker

Closdifficile · 10/03/2023 18:54

@Calmdown14 he hosted a ukrainian refugee and donates money to loads of charities.

Tiny sub samples of political stuff Jeremy Clarkson said or did when presenting Top Gear for BBC:

how did what GL said cross lines that JC didn't obliterate, weren't tolerated by a Beeb presenter?

TwoMonthsOff · 10/03/2023 18:55

Just trying to save some money I expect

VenAqui · 10/03/2023 18:56

Maybe Fiona Bruce could present

ive just finished watching W1A again and can only imagine the meetings going on right now 🤣

GPTec1 · 10/03/2023 18:56

Shouldn't be forgotten why Lineker tweeted what he did.

So we know live in a country where opposing views to that of this Government cannot be voiced.

Ms Salter, who has been recognised with an MBE for her work on Holocaust education, likened Ms Braverman's rhetoric on migrants attempting to cross the English Channel to that used by the Nazis during the Second World War
In footage of the exchange, provided by the charity Freedom From Torture, Ms Salter said: "I am a child survivor of the Holocaust
"In 1943, I was forced to flee my birthplace in Belgium and went across war-torn Europe and dangerous seas until I finally was able to come to the UK in 1947
"When I hear you using words against refugees like 'swarms' and an 'invasion', I am reminded of the language used to dehumanise and justify the murder of my family and millions of others"

The BBC have caved into political pressure, if they do that over a sports presenter, what chance of free and fair political coverage at the next GE ?

It's quite easy to host refugees when you have millions and live in a huge house, they would hardly be sharing the sofa and kitchen space

mrswhiplington · 10/03/2023 18:56

If he wants to be a champion for migrants then he should speak up for ALL migrants, not just when it involves the British government. As I said in a previous post, it suited him to keep quiet in Qatar and take the money.

mrswhiplington · 10/03/2023 18:45

Why wasn't he so outspoken about human rights and the treatment of women and migrant workers in Qatar during the World Cup. I imagine the pay packet was too good to turn down.

He was! His entire introduction to the opening of the World Cup was devoted to these issues. Have a listen to the News Agents podcast about it.

But this is why it has a Charter and rules. Governments will try to drag it one way or the other, but (like the Civil Service) the aim is to make it a heavy weight to drag in either direction.

This why the tories will never turn it into Fox News, no matter who they appoint. And vice versa.

He does loads of work with the International Red Cross, not just migration but world wide across many issues.

So i guess his work with the Red Cross should have been stopped long ago........

userlotsanumbers · 10/03/2023 18:59

Do I recall that Paul Dacre, formerly of the Daily Mail had taken over? Might explain the shift in thinking, if so?

It still didn't stop him profiting from it though, did it?

LakeTiticaca · 10/03/2023 19:00

Gary Lineker should remain impartial and do the job he is paid for, presenting the football. His tweet about comparing the illegal immigration to the national holocaust was insulting and uncalled for, but it seems the Jews are still fair game for taking potshots at.
Those who are shouting the loudest about letting all comers into the country are those least likely to be affected by suddenly having 200 twenty-something men dumped upon their community. It won't affect Gary is his nice gated community.
Gary, Ian Wright et al were all quite happy to pocket large sums of money on the back of the abused migrant workers in Qatar weren't they!!
One thing worse than a champagne socialist, a bloody hypocritical one!!

Galadriel90 · 10/03/2023 19:00

I'm Jewish and I'm not insulted. I agree with Gary lineker.

Fleur405 · 10/03/2023 19:00

They are scared of the Tory government cutting or even removing the licence fee.

I honestly feel Gary Lineker should be entitled to his opinion re political issues on his personal social media. He’s not a journalist or reading the 10 o’clock news, he presents a football show! Providing he doesn’t use match of the day to set out his views on immigration I don’t see how it impacts impartiality at the BBC.

As for the David Attenborough thing that is downright bonkers and I expect he’s appalled.

Soapyspuds · 10/03/2023 19:00

@WinterMusings

He has a really really high following, it's only going to damage the BBC, taking him off MOTD

What do you mean by high following?

I would guess that people watch match of the day primarily for the football highlights. As long as the host is sufficiently competent, personable and knowledgeable I cannot see the ratings changing much. There might be an initial drop as some viewers decide to switch off in support but I cannot imagine that lasting long.

Lineker has been ever more vocal on social media recently and peoples opinions on this will be very polarised. I expect that him leaving will cause some viewers to return after getting fed up with his antics.

Completely agree. It's easy to say he spoke about it but he still took the money. Seems his principles only apply when he wants them too. I just can't feel sorry for him when he picks and chooses what he preaches about.
