What is going on at the BBC right now?

What with the news breaking today ( 10/03/23) that Lineker is to step back from presenting Match of the Day and now Ian Wright is also not going to appear on the show in solidarity. They also have said that they will not air a David Attenborough (what the hell did he do/say that pushed their buttons) episode due to fears of a right-wing backlash. On top of that, Fiona Bruce has said that Stanley Johnson 'only' broke his wife's nose once (I mean just how many times is too many, I ask ye).

What the hell is going on at the BBC right now????

Sources:
David Attenborough being cancelled
Gary Lineker stepping back from MotD
Ian Wright standing by Gary
Fiona Bruce story

Just wondering if anyone can make sense of what is going on in the BBC at the moment.

I mean do people really watch MOTD in droves because of him? Nah, plenty of passionate, knowledgeable and engaging other people could do it and people would still watch.

There don't seem to be too many keen to do it now...

Gary Lineker is a highly skilled presenter. MOTD viewing figures have risen appreciably during his tenure. He is widely admired and highly regarded within both the football word and the TV presenting world. He may well be overpaid but so are very many people.

He's the highest paid on BBC and far from the most talented. I agree lots of people are overpaid, but bearing in mind women are disproportionately jailed for not paying for a TV license, people are hounded for not doing so and even if you dont watch any BBC channels you have to bloody pay the license fee the money should be spent responsibly.

MOTD has had decent viewing figures for over 5 decades, the notable rise in viewers wasn't until well into his tenure, suggesting perhaps its not just him but the whole team who put the show together. It's drawn plenty of criticism for being bland, boring so I'm not sure- i think a breath of fresh air would be great for the programme.

I presume you didn’t see a couple of films uploaded to YouTube this week. Northern Ireland. A woman walking home in the dark accosted by a group of immigrants from the local hotel accommodating them. A man following her and two in front making sure she can’t get away. Not suggesting that all migrants are like this, but it’s a cause for concern.

Why not seperate their criminality from their nationality?

Why is all about Albanians?

The BBC have commented on The Guardian story about David Attenborough to correct their inaccurate reporting.

"This is totally inaccurate, there is no ‘6th episode’. Wild Isles is – and always was - a 5 part series. We acquired a separate film for iPlayer from the RSPB, WWF and Silverback Films about people working to preserve and restore the biodiversity of the British Isles."

Unfortunately they didn’t think to take down their own blurb about it on the Countryfile page before claiming the Guardian had got it wrong. Oops!

@NiceHotCuppaCoffee wtf does gender ideology have to do with it ? You were banging on about it in the other thread ...

Rosscameasdoody · 10/03/2023 20:35

Believeitornot · 10/03/2023 20:31

You did.

The lawyers are jumping on it because it is unlawful.

Why doesn’t the government come up with lawful options? Can’t be hard.

Nope. Didn’t. I live in an area of high immigration and I see the consequences every day - do you ? Something has to be done. And don’t be naive. If there wasn’t money to be made, no lawyer would be anywhere near it.

2020, so not updated, but according to the UN we at number 5, IN THE WORLD for foreign born nationals. The list is USA, Germany, Saudi, Russia (this will have changed!), then UK.

Foreign born nationals isn’t the same as taking asylum seekers…. Eg could you count people who bought visa under the golden visa scheme…

Liverpool had school girls filming immigrant adult men trying to get their needs 'serviced'.

Too many men, and undocumented, what happens to all the Albanian men when they leave our prisons?

Yes. We have asylum seeking children in our schools and my children’s classes.

And I feel really sorry for them.

But our services are under strain because the Tories have cut public services - as they don’t particularly like the state and will take any excuse to cut it. I don’t blame asylum seekers for that.

Closdifficile · 10/03/2023 20:37

@Rosscameasdoody so do I. But the town has been starved of money for years. Services crumbling because of that not 50 somalian women and children fleeing war.

He's had refugees living in his house. He doesn't just talk the talk.

...and I bet he hates to talk about it
he's completely lost contact with the concerns of the ordinary person- I guess the media bubble does that to you if you're not already uber middle class (and living in walthamstow/brighton etc)
i would have so much admiration for him if he'd stood up for women's sports- he's a sportsman ffs- there's no way he doesn't know what's going on with men fucking over women's sport.
he has fuck all integrity
so, yeah, anything he does that appears virtuous- I don't buy it

That was a fake video according to media (real media not social media) reports.

Be mindful that there are many truly awful racist cunts out there who are happy to lie to the gullible. Don't be one of the gullible!

Give me a reason to. All I’m seeing is women being hounded in my local area. Reported on the local news every day. Tonight a news report about a thirteen year old girl being asked for sex and telling the perpetrator that that’s not how we behave in this country. Film to support it - three men, one following her and two in front to stop her getting away. Deny it all you like, but it happens.

3amflatulence · 10/03/2023 20:39

actually i would nt have admiration if he stood up for womens sports- it's a bare minimum for a high profile sportsman but i know he's too cowardly- wait until the wind blows more favourably

I was Shock at what FB said, although on many other matters on QT last night I thought she was more robust with the Minister.

But what she said about 'only once' was disgusting.

It doesn't matter how they got here, or what you classify them as. This figure will include asylum seekers Linekar thinks we are racists and Nazis. We clearly are not.

Piggywaspushed · 10/03/2023 20:40

Is that an issue in football?

Of course it matters. Russians buying their way here is doesn’t equate to taking vulnerable people fleeing persecution

It was appalling and she or the BBC should issue a statement

It’s incredibly racist to do so.

I would be wary of conflating criminals with their nationality.

If they commit a crime, deal with them accordingly, but implying that asylum seekers shouldn’t be allowed in the U.K. because of potential for law breaking - that implies you think they’re all criminals.

I find the sex imbalance a concern. The vast majority of those arriving are young males. We know that men are responsible for 98% of violent crime. That is not to say that all men (or all asylum seekers are criminals) but a proportion of them will be for sure. I wonder if continually accepting high numbers of male asylum seekers or immigrants without similar numbers of females (they must exist) will create a social imbalance eventually. It would be nice to see more balance.

Shock that is really embarrassing. They are just lying now.

It is sad because this is what the Tories wanted I think - put Tories in a break the BBC from the inside.

JemimaTiggywinkles · 10/03/2023 20:42

So would I. But despite my disappointment in him, I still support him now. Because having been on the “wrong” side of “correct” speech in recent years wrt single sex spaces, I value freedom of speech now even more than I did before.

I don’t know what the answer is on immigration. I don’t know if what he said was right or wrong. But I think he had every right to say it, and shouldn’t be sacked for it.
