What is going on at the BBC right now?

What with the news breaking today ( 10/03/23) that Lineker is to step back from presenting Match of the Day and now Ian Wright is also not going to appear on the show in solidarity. They also have said that they will not air a David Attenborough (what the hell did he do/say that pushed their buttons) episode due to fears of a right-wing backlash. On top of that, Fiona Bruce has said that Stanley Johnson 'only' broke his wife's nose once (I mean just how many times is too many, I ask ye).

What the hell is going on at the BBC right now????

Sources:
David Attenborough being cancelled
Gary Lineker stepping back from MotD
Ian Wright standing by Gary
Fiona Bruce story

Just wondering if anyone can make sense of what is going on in the BBC at the moment.

It's ALL madness.

GL is a Sports Broadcaster & doesn't have the clause in his contract about being neutral. He can tweet what he wants. He has a really really high following, it's only going to damage the BBC, taking him off MOTD

DA can be quite scathing of Govts & their policies.

FB I did have to rewind & listen again BUT she is a BRILLIANT presenter & is an absolute star on Question Time, an absolute professional when many of us would have told people on the panel to STFU. I think in the context of the comment that made her say that and the pressure she'd been under for the hour prior to that, it was more just trying to correct the person that made the comment than her thinking his actions were ok because it was only once.

BBC need to think very carefully!

Not to mention the way the top bloke got his position there...

Fiona Bruce has always been a dreadful presenter .
Trouble is she presents arty programmes I am interested in, but I watch them despite her , not because of her.
Her nadir was that awful interview with Prince Philip. She got him so wrong it was embarrassing to watch

There is a refugee crisis and the UK needs to take it’s fair share. It isn’t.

Refugees may have family connections here

They have the right to apply for asylum. It can be turned down. The Home Secretary wants to take that right away completely.

Refugees don’t have other routes and you’ve no idea what they’ve been told about the boat journey.

Has anyone in this government actually spoken to people who make the dangerous journey? Or just made up reasons in their head?

Plus the boat policy does not tackle the existing backlog (many people sitting in hotels didn’t come via boat).

If you believe somebody will do something so dangerous to be reunited with a distant cousin you’re not really up to having this conversation to be honest.

Enfys1982 · 10/03/2023 20:12

@Moonicorn would you prefer I used the words dick, cock or prick instead? Any would apply equally as nicely…

LookItsMeAgain · 10/03/2023 20:12

hay5689 · 10/03/2023 19:01

Completely agree. It's easy to say he spoke about it but he still took the money. Seems his principles only apply when he wants them too. I just can't feel sorry for him when he picks and chooses what he preaches about.

I do hope with that opinion of Lineker, you don't buy anything or support anything that David Beckham ever gave his name to or played for or supported? He took a hell of a lot of money from Qatar recently and was seen in the promo videos for a state in the Middle East that has not had a wonderful history of human rights, to say the very least.

@KnittedCardi if we had a sensible asylum system and safe routes, then more people will come through legal channels and can be turned away quickly if they aren’t eligible.

We don’t have that, and that’s why criminals can exploit it.

Because we don’t take our fair share, other countries have no incentive to help us and France just allow the boats across. We have to bribe them half a million pounds to get them to do a bit more.

We need to invest in people to process claims, invest in a centre in France and have safe routes.

carriedout · 10/03/2023 20:13

woodhill · 10/03/2023 20:11

Exactly

And we have had constant immigration since the 90s.

We have taken in so many people

Lineker's issue was the language and the way the policy was going to be applied.

At no point has Lineker said there wouldn't/shouldn't be visas refused.

You don't have to be a hideous cunt like Braverman to have a border.

Starflecked · 10/03/2023 20:13

Although what he said was offensive (yet not surprising given people always use the comparison for stuff that isn't actually comparable), the issue is that the BBC is meant to remain politically impartial. As he is paid a huge wedge of money from the TV license we are strong armed into paying if we want to watch any live TV, whether he likes it or not as one of their most prolific presenters his views are reflective of the organisation enough that its a problem.

There are other jobs where this is also the case, its not about free speech in general as such, if he felt that passionately he could leave his cushty, over paid and privileged job and be free to say what he likes. I mean do people really watch MOTD in droves because of him? Nah, plenty of passionate, knowledgeable and engaging other people could do it and people would still watch.

The BBC has been on the decline for years imo, not really fit for purpose anymore. Have it at the mercy of advertisers or subscriptions if they want to have political bias like the other channels. Much of the decent content they produce would be procured by other companies.

Todays show where there was a discussion about Fiona Bruce’s comments on Stanley Johnson?

I listened to his show from 10-11 today because I had a midwife appointment. He was discussing Lineker, repeatedly wondering why anyone was giving the issue airtime, whilst giving it a lot of airtime. He had a protracted conversation with a caller who wants immigration that ‘blends in’ and not Muslims. Am I still lying about listening?

Neither are you, because you have no idea what people go through.

Why do you think mothers cross the channel with their babies?

Because their husbands are. They’re subservient in their relationships. Unless you think Afghan women are lying that is.

woodhill · 10/03/2023 20:15

I don't understand the thinking that we don't take our fair share

We have the Afghans, the people from Hong Kong, the Ukrainians etc plus a huge amount of economic migrants

How does that make him sexist?

James is sexist because he absolutely will not address the gender/women’s rights issues even when the content of his show needs him to do it. He says he doesn’t want to call transwomen (men) ‘liars’, and essentially becomes very yellow and spineless because he’s GC underneath but equally relies on his Twitter Wokerati for likes and listeners, so won’t stick up for women at any critical moment. He started off saying some good things about Brexit but has become high on his own supply and now speaks to everyone with a sneering, dismissive, arrogant tone although I appreciate that’s subjective.

woodhill · 10/03/2023 20:17

Perhaps it for depends on where you live?

Yes, women and children only.

I would not have a cap on this.

NiceHotCuppaCoffee · 10/03/2023 20:18

I don't see far right flays flying everywhere, I rarely see a St George or Union flag, I do however see lots and lots of another type of flag.

If anyone has taken over it's not the far right.

I haven’t really looked at detail but I thought more safe routes were going to be established. Recent announcement

Interesting rereading the OP, how few of the posters on here, despite wanting to engage on accusing people of misogyny, are keen to discuss Fiona Bruce's words on QT.

I thought that too.

@Moonicorn you consistently post absolute nonsense not supported by any of the facts known by those who work in the sector.

I myself know people who came here to live with distant relatives after their immediate families were murdered or imprisoned.

You can deny the truth of people's lives if you need to do that because you have a psychological problem processing the reality of the world, but it doesn't make you right.

Of course some people who come are criminals - but equally some are people who have suffered great hardship and trauma who just want to live a peaceful, productive life.

Turkey: 3 million refugees

That is a LOT of people, mainly who live in camps

This is because there is a lot of shit going on in the world and people flee to nearby countries

But these figures aren't widely known

There don't seem to be too many keen to do it now...

Gary Lineker is a highly skilled presenter. MOTD viewing figures have risen appreciably during his tenure. He is widely admired and highly regarded within both the football word and the TV presenting world. He may well be overpaid but so are very many people.

In 1930s Germany, the Nazis used the law to gradually excluded Jews from public life, certain professions, and education. The goal of Nazi propaganda was to demonize Jews and to create a climate of hostility and indifference toward their plight…
How is that different to what Suella is doing?

A founding trustee of the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust (HMDT) is among a number of prominent Jews to hit out at ex-footballer and BBC pundit Gary Lineker over his tweet comparing the language being used to talk about UK’s asylum plans to 1930s Germany.

Karen Pollock, chief executive of the Holocaust Educational Trust, wrote in a Times op-ed: “However passionately we feel about important and pressing issues of the day, it seems to me that comparing those current concerns to the almost unimaginable horrors of the Nazi period is wrong.”

The Lineker haters

Personally I quite like Gary Lineker - but not this particular tweet.
