What is going on at the BBC right now?

What with the news breaking today ( 10/03/23) that Lineker is to step back from presenting Match of the Day and now Ian Wright is also not going to appear on the show in solidarity. They also have said that they will not air a David Attenborough (what the hell did he do/say that pushed their buttons) episode due to fears of a right-wing backlash. On top of that, Fiona Bruce has said that Stanley Johnson 'only' broke his wife's nose once (I mean just how many times is too many, I ask ye).

What the hell is going on at the BBC right now????

Sources:
David Attenborough being cancelled
Gary Lineker stepping back from MotD
Ian Wright standing by Gary
Fiona Bruce story

Just wondering if anyone can make sense of what is going on in the BBC at the moment.

Why wasn't he so outspoken about human rights and the treatment of women and migrant workers in Qatar during the World Cup. I imagine the pay packet was too good to turn down.

YY absolutely this. Frankly I find it difficult to have sympathy with Lineker after that.

Oh so it’s like that is it? The Nazis didn’t just treat Jews that way, by the way.

She is saying that they cannot even become British citizens because they are not good enough.

Why not treat them as human beings? And let them have the chance to become British citizens instead of portraying them as greedy invaders who could never achieve such status?

Okay, let’s break this down. I don’t really ‘do’ silly circular phrases like ‘Brexit means Brexit’ or ‘treated like human beings’. Because it’s meaningless.

Do I believe every person who wants to become a British citizen should have that right? No.

In terms of ‘treating people like humans’, what does that mean in this context? Getting into the boats is a choice and a completely unnecessary one, having been in France, a safe and wealthy country. The only danger comes from what they are putting themselves in.

Believeitornot · 10/03/2023 20:04

If Linekar said something that was so outrageous, explain
a) why the language used by the Home Sec isn’t dissimilar?
b) what is so great and fair about the Home Sec’s policy?

theworldhas · 10/03/2023 20:04

The irony is that it won’t be the anti BBC Tory Party that does for the BBC in the end - rather it will be their toadying to the Tories which will make the 80% of British people who DONT usually vote Tory sick of standing up for the BBC. It started a couple of decades ago and this is nearing end game now. However you look at it BBC has let the country down.

If he’s so sexist and intolerant…..

Why do you listen to him most days??????

Liar.

Because, and this will stun you rigid, DH likes to have LBC on and I can actually tolerate listening to the opinions of others. The fact you think I’m ‘lying’ says far more about your own intolerance doesnt it!

KnittedCardi · 10/03/2023 20:06

I just don't get it. We have recently issued visas or right to stay for 150, 000 from Hong Kong, 170,000 Ukrainians, 80,000 Afghans, and various other nationalities from Africa and Asia. I applaud this, and I think the majority support these. All this is good and welcome. How does that make us remotely like the Nazis?

The current issue is specifically with Albanian young men, 15,000 in the last few months. This has to stop. Not only for them, but for their country too. Albania is planning to join the EU ffs. They have to sort themselves out.

Europol are all over this, but the scale is huge, it funds drug cartels and massive law breaking.

What is Gary Linekars solution?

To me, the people supporting the men arriving in boats are Male Rights Activists without even realising they are - so open minded their brains have fallen out. Here we have large numbers of youngish men from countries which do not respect women. There is no reason to believe these men are simply not a product of their upbringing and safe to be around us. People argue otherwise in a kind of ‘not my Nigel/refugee’ type argument, are they saying the Afghan women are lying about the sexist society they live in? Simultaneously they’ve abandoned their wives and children, for months to years, in a country ‘so dangerous they had to leave’. Which shows they feel women’s lives are inherently less valuable than their own.

So British women are unsafe, Afghan women are unsafe, and expected to accept it to make sure these men get what they want.

I am not racist or anti immigration and would accept a basically uncapped number of women and children refugees.

But young men? It’s a no from me. There are so few downsides to being a man in a patriarchal country, this should be one of them 🤷🏼‍♀️

And further to my previous posts why do I never hear anyone on here talking about the plight of abandoned Afghan women and children?

i studied political history and the rise of fascism, Germany did not wake up one morning to find that there were concentration camps, it was a long journey that began in a time of severe economic hardship and began with the othering of all those perceived as "different", the disabled, the mentally ill, Roma gypsies, Jewish people, gay people, trade union members and so on. Does any of this sound familiar, even just faintly similar to some of the things we hear about today?

There is a refugee crisis and the UK needs to take it’s fair share. It isn’t.

Refugees may have family connections here

They have the right to apply for asylum. It can be turned down. The Home Secretary wants to take that right away completely.

Refugees don’t have other routes and you’ve no idea what they’ve been told about the boat journey.

Has anyone in this government actually spoken to people who make the dangerous journey? Or just made up reasons in their head?

Plus the boat policy does not tackle the existing backlog (many people sitting in hotels didn’t come via boat).

I mean you could say that about any immigration couldn’t you? That not letting someone in, anyone, just because they want to be here is ‘othering’ them. Unless you believe any person who wants to come here should be able to then you are ‘othering’ non British people 🤷🏼‍♀️

Definitely something very wrong with BBC at the moment. They want GL to be censored and impartial for speaking up for immigrants but BBC didn't think there was anything wrong with promoting Shamima Begum's bid to return to the UK.

I agree completely. The BBC’s shameless promotion of Begum is a disgrace. Giving a platform to terrorists & Britain’s enemies is not impartiality.

Not sure if he got extra for Qatar or did it under his existing contract, but there was a big set piece to camera so he got to say plenty.

Of course you’re lying. James O’Brien today, for example, had a phone in about Fiona Bruce’s comments and discussions about domestic violence.

So, I don’t know how you made your leap - so I think you’re lying. Either lying about listening or lying about his opinions.

90% are men. From a patriarchal country (unless you think the Afghan women are lying about living in a sexist society). Does this not concern you? If not, why not?

This is exactly the kind of brainless nonsense which makes people believe the left are both a) not very bright and b) vitriolic.

Agreed @Moonicorn , anyone who thinks the far right are 'better' than the far left is a brainless cunt with no grasp of history, or political awerness

This country needs to take responsibility for its criminals and shouldn’t have stripped her of her citizenship.

Unless you think being brown makes you less British. She was born here. Born in the U.K., so we need to deal with our mess.

Piggywaspushed · 10/03/2023 20:10

I just need to check...

The Lineker haters... you would have been OK with him using his Twitter platform to criticise Qatar and their human rights? You would have been fine with that? Really? Really??

Exactly

And we have had constant immigration since the 90s.

We have taken in so many people

Nope, you couldn't say it about any immigration. You can turn down a visa application whilst also recognising the humanity of the person applying. See Jacinda Ardern for example.

That is why what Lineker particularly attacked was the language, which has been disgusting from Braverman.
