Thread 6 - TalkExiles: "Yup, still round."

Kucinghitam · 07/03/2023 13:49

Continuation of previous threads (thread 5).

Gather here all ye refugees from the JTT Flat Earth Society, welcome to the reassuringly oblate spheroid of MN! Ye all already know the answers to the questions "How the heck do I format my post?" "Why can't I edit my typos?" "What do those acronyms mean?" and most importantly, "Where is everybody that I used to know?"

So really we're all here just to chat randomly.

That passport thread is scary.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 23/03/2023 19:52

I agree it's hard to justify banning solar panels on conservation grounds. They are a little obtrusive on some roof types, but not enough to change the character of the building - certainly less visual effect than something like parking a car in front of the house.

artant · 23/03/2023 20:12

Yeah, my house is very much an exception in the area in still having a front garden (as well as a narrow drive and garage; these were houses built with the expectation of cars becoming more of a thing) rather than a paved front. It’s fair to say the area doesn’t look like it did in the 1930s!

MavisMcMinty · 23/03/2023 22:11

My thatch would look terrible with solar panels, but luckily I have several other large south-facing roofs, all I’m missing is the lottery win now.

artant · 23/03/2023 23:34

Solar on thatch would indeed be aesthetically challenging!

artant · 23/03/2023 23:46

I have just been trying to explain the new world order in terms of gender ideology to my 97 year old mother. She’s unequivocal in her belief that only women can have babies and only men have penises and more than a little outraged that anyone would think otherwise. I’ve told her she’s transphobic but I don’t think she cares.

duc748 · 24/03/2023 00:17

What a world we live in. Thousands of years of gradual (we hoped) human improvement, and we've come up with this to offer to our children? And science goes out of the window too?

duc748 · 24/03/2023 00:23

By which I mean (sorry. two post ment) that @artant 's Mum isn't wrong of course, but the lunatics have taken over the asylum. Well, some of them are lunatics, some of them are political chancers, and some of them are downright malevolent.

I'm seeing more and more comments across social media where people, mostly men it has to be said, are saying that "yes the TERFs are technically right in what they are saying but who wants to be on the same side as transphobes?"

This is insane.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 24/03/2023 09:57

There was a word for word the same comment, from a man, back at the other place.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 24/03/2023 09:58

To which the only answer is: Hitler was a vegetarian.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 24/03/2023 10:15

Well, he wasn't. But he was anti smoking - which works just as well as an argument.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 24/03/2023 10:15

If not better, there are still loads of people who argue with vegetarians.

artant · 24/03/2023 10:43

That house video is extraordinary. There’s a bit where she sings “stranger things have happened in this master bedroom”. I highly doubt it!

duc748 · 24/03/2023 10:45

Reminds of ChaChaChaz and co at the old place who used to moan years ago that it was no good being a boring old member of the The Gays these days, you need to be poly-sexual, or differently gendered, or something to be more interesting. As a vegetarian myself, (and a smoker, bint!) I kinda feel the same about vegans.

duc748 · 24/03/2023 10:53

The Right Move thing is genius.

Dotellhimpike · 24/03/2023 11:05

When people ask me why I am vegan ( I never raise the point directly but it comes up if they ask why I don't want to eat specific foods being offered?) I always say it's mostly cos it's good for starting arguments.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 24/03/2023 11:12

I didn't know Hitler was a meat eater, amazing how we (I) believe in myths. Yes, anti smoking would do - an attitude he shared with the deeply evil James I&VI.

Actually, googling tells me Hitler was vegetarian in the 1940s, and, even better, that he self identified as vegetarian so I think I'll stick with that - something being all smoke and misdirection doesn't mean it's out of place in this debate. I can keep evil anti-tobacco bods in reserve.

Just to reflect a bit more on this mentality. I find it a bit terrifying, really. This lack of interrogation of your own views and whether they align with your normal principles about truth and right and wrong is how really bad things happen.

MavisMcMinty · 24/03/2023 11:17

I just saw that exact statement in the other place, @Ereshkigalangcleg !

MavisMcMinty · 24/03/2023 11:17

Ah, I see you acknowledge that further up the page, sorry.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 24/03/2023 11:27

It was kind of funny, because he only said it because another man indicated that he agreed with the decision. Then the other man said he was only joking.

MavisMcMinty · 24/03/2023 11:31

They’re like attack dogs, some of them, with some very surprising people (to me) on permanent patrol. It’s not conducive to expressing opinion, it has a real “chilling” effect.
