Continuation of previous threads (thread 5).

Gather here all ye refugees from the JTT Flat Earth Society, welcome to the reassuringly oblate spheroid of MN! Ye all already know the answers to the questions "How the heck do I format my post?" "Why can't I edit my typos?" "What do those acronyms mean?" and most importantly, "Where is everybody that I used to know?"

So really we're all here just to chat randomly.

Carefully taking note of films to never ever watch . . .

Gonners · 20/03/2023 20:21

I haven't seen AQOTWF but I don't think I want to. It's one of those books that I re-read every 5-10 years, because it's absolutely gripping. It's astonishing, though, that the film was first made in 1930 and it's taken 92 years for someone to remake it.

MavisMcMinty · 20/03/2023 20:24

Apparently there was another in (iirc, having googled it after Crows mentioned it) 1979. I haven’t seen any of them or read the book, but I might buy the book now, given the film is a fair bit longer than my 90-minute comfort zone.

Gonners · 20/03/2023 20:59

Ah, I didn't know about that one, Mavis. I see the latest one is German - is it subtitled, Crows, or dubbed?

NotDrowningJustCrowing · 21/03/2023 07:44

Subtitled. I love the 1930's one but this is able to be more, well graphic I guess. Mavis, it is long but it didn't feel as long as it is. I would have edited out some of the last half hour.

There's definitely something compelling about a film from the point of view of the losing side. I know we have all the Vietnam war films but this is very different to those, not least because trench war is pretty claustrophobic. @Dotellhimpike it does have a moment or two of light relief unlike Come and See which is relentless. There's a great scene with a goose that made me laugh out loud.

Anyway! The weather is very grey and wet but spring has sprung and we've all survived another winter. Go us!

Tricyrtis2022 · 21/03/2023 10:26

Morning.

I'm almost tempted to watch AQOTWF, but read the book in my teens and still have the imagery in my head. So many films of books get it horribly wrong and then I can't enjoy either of them again, because my imagery and the film's get all mixed up.

Anyway. I've had my brother to stay for a few days and am knackered. Need a few early nights to restore my energy, but it was very nice waking up this morning and thinking that there is no one extra in the house to look after.

NotDrowningJustCrowing · 22/03/2023 22:50

Just about every word of this has me snorting like the naughty child at the back of the classroom.

And while looking at nonsense like that on the internets I am sitting on my recliner with my legs up and SO much leg room. Hahahahaha!

I'm not sure why I'm posting double images because when I do it I think it's only one. Anyway, two for the price of one. Or something.

Those fish were something else, weren't they?

Tricyrtis2022 · 23/03/2023 14:40

Blimey, you wouldn't want one of those biting you.

I liked the swimming hippos in one of the other vids.

Kucinghitam · 23/03/2023 15:05

I liked the comment Those are “Absolutely the fuck nots” and they are native to Nopeville.

Just say no to terrifying alien fish things.

In less scary news, our solar panels were installed today. Earlier, when it was raining with patchy cloud, we were generating the same as we were using. It's now steady rain and heavy overcast, and we're making about enough to run an LED bulb. Which isn't much, but considering the latitude, time of year and weather I'm amazed we're getting anything at all.

artant · 23/03/2023 16:45

That sounds promising, bint.

Have you got your electric car yet?

MavisMcMinty · 23/03/2023 16:53

Dunno if I’ve posted this here before but my Dad’s local council is co-funding/getting excellent bulk-buy deals for solar panelling on as many privately-owned roofs as possible, which is brilliant.

They also turned off almost all residential street lights at midnight, quite a few years ago.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 23/03/2023 16:55

I pick up the car on Monday.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 23/03/2023 16:55

I pick up the car on Monday.

Exciting! And excellent timing for charging it from your roof. Fingers crossed for some sunshine.

Kucinghitam · 23/03/2023 17:16

Exciting about @BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn's solar panels and new car.

We've thought many-a-time about getting solar panels but somehow, something always comes up that has a more urgent call on our cash supply.

@Tricyrtis2022 yes me! I've been 👀at that thread... part of me does suspect a wind-up, but it's compelling reading.

Tricyrtis2022 · 23/03/2023 17:28

Nice one on the solar panels and new vehicle. Not sure if we could have SP here as we're in a conservation area, but then the landlord wouldn't pay for them anyway.

@Kucinghitam, it very much sounds like a scam to me, but I hope the poor woman, the mum, will be okay. I'd be terrified if she was my mother.

Ginmonkeyagain · 23/03/2023 17:45

Romance frauds are awful and often precison tooled to capture lonely and vulnerable people.

They are dreadful.

MavisMcMinty · 23/03/2023 18:01

I had a 60-year old patient who went to The Gambia on her DLA and had a torrid affair with a young Gambian man. She didn’t lose any money to him, but he was very keen to come over here and marry her. She came back with multiple sexually transmitted diseases which rather cooled her ardour.

artant · 23/03/2023 18:24

I’m also in a conservation area and can’t have solar panels (well, technically I think I could but only in the back of the house which in mu
case faces north). I’m of the opinion that the council needs to rethink as pretty suburban housing isn’t much use on an uninhabitable planet.
