Very strange and worrying situation. Please keep an eye out if you're local. www.southwalesargus.co.uk/news/23364255.three-newport-women-missing-night-city/?ref=twtrec

It looks like the police have been appalling, yet again, Sophie’s mum was told to stop calling the police, so she went out looking herself and knocking on doors.

Why is it the polices fault?

It was in every news paper and the police were out looking for them as they were very concerned about their whereabouts.

I don’t understand why if someone goes missing and the police don’t find them in a matter of minutes because they’re not psychic, then they’re labelled incompetent or that they’ve failed.

That’s like saying why didn’t the parents or community find them sooner if they were out looking for them.
Have they also failed or is it that they had no idea what direction the car went and as a PP has said people drive on that road everyday and there were no obvious signs that there had been an accident there.

I’m sure they did tell the mum to stop ringing because they were already being treated as missing people with high importance and her keep ringing wasn’t going to do any good.

They've come off the road and been trapped in the car, injured, dying, or dead, for two days. I'd call that scary.

well, petrifying for them, but I wouldn’t have thought it’d be scary for you and me, no matter how many minutes away we live.

It is well known that reactions are different the closer something is. We feel safer in our own localities, we feel more emotionally affected when something happens on our own street.

Don't be an arse about people's normal human reactions @DDoOneRon

piedbeauty · 06/03/2023 07:13

Whose car was it? I can't see that mentioned.

What a waste of young lives.

Kinneddar · 06/03/2023 07:14

AuntieJoyce · 06/03/2023 07:08

They’ve reported themselves. Which would suggest to me that they’ve not treated this with an appropriate urgency.

Not necessarily. They can refer themselves for transparency & for clarification the incident was handled correctly by them.

I'm sure it was reported initially that the police dismissed it as low risk. Anyway I'm not sure we'll find out any time soon. A similar case close to me in 2015 still has not had the fatal accident inquiry heard. Must be so hard for the families

KalvinPhillipsBoots · 06/03/2023 07:18

So sad after reading the update. Thinking of all loved ones concerned, those poor people.

Fair enough

i bet I’m right though unfortunately.

Kinneddar · 06/03/2023 07:19

This

It says they asked her to stop ringing for updates. They'd have told her she'd be the first person to know of any developments. Every time she phoned an officer involved in the enquiry would have to leave what they were doing to phone her back to tell her there was still no news.

There was a large scale search out involving police & the public. Several people have said they drove that road yesterday & didnt see anything. Are we going to blame them too??

I believe it’s standard practise to report themselves when bodies are found during a missing persons enquiry so I wouldn’t read too much into that.

CalpolDependant · 06/03/2023 07:22

Just seen the update in the news on this case. I feel so desperately sad for those young people and their poor families.

Everycloud23 · 06/03/2023 07:25

That’s horrendous news. It did sound odd that the car just disappeared after it was seen on some of the journey.

Fairyliz · 06/03/2023 07:25

From the DM it says they’ve found 3 bodies and 2 are in hospital seriously injured. It looks like the police have been appalling, yet again, Sophie’s mum was told to stop calling the police, so she went out looking herself and knocking on doors. It seems like the community were out looking for the car.

So the police were ignoring the fears of a middle aged woman. Why am I not surprised?

That medium is utterly extraordinary
and I’m a total skeptic usually
how is that possible

Let’s not big up charlatans and woohoo chanters. She is not extraordinary in the least
Inevitably the “medium” will give a vague enough revelation that can favourably be applied to the situation as if she’s successfully found the missing young people. Of course

The missing individuals are found by hard work, painstaking effort, and team work. Knowledge of the locality and the roads.

No need to indulge in woohoo to explain this sad event

RecoIIectionsMayVary · 06/03/2023 07:32

I think the fact that the BBC didn't carry the story indicates the police didn't take it seriously.
SM and talking about this case was helpful in as far as so many people, both friends and strangers started looking for them.

RIP to those that have died.

It was probably on BBC Wales where it was more relevant. That's pretty standard with incidents in Scotland & Wales. I know of several 'big' incidents up here that didn't make it to the BBC. It was reported on other media platforms

I think the fact they had a large scale search ongoing involving 2 forces is more of an indication they were taking it seriously.

toomuchlaundry · 06/03/2023 07:38

How many missing people stories do the BBC have to cover?

For all the stories that end up with a tragic ending there are many others where people had just gone off for a drinks/drugs bender. Just have to see that from the many posts on here where someone’s partner doesn’t come home after going out for a drink

Th BBC not reporting it shows nothing.

Lancs police announced Nicola Bulley was missing at around 5pm the day she disappeared (Friday), it was on Granada reports over the weekend but it wasn't picked up by national news until Sunday evening/headline news until Monday and that was being treated as urgent from the start.

98000 adults are reported missing a year, the majority turning up within 24-48 hours (75/85% respectively), very few will make the news.

Post on here that your partner hasn't come home and you will generally be told you are being ridiculous and they will most likely be sleeping it off somewhere and the police won't do anything.

Absolute tragic outcome, but the anti-police rhetoric helps no-one.

BeStrongLittleRodney · 06/03/2023 07:53

I’m so sad to wake to this news this morning; it was the only explanation that made any sense to me, sadly.

thaegumathteth · 06/03/2023 08:25

I completely agree!

It’s very tragic and sad and it’s frustrating that some posters try and derail the thread by putting blame on the police when there is absolutely no evidence of them doing anything wrong.
