Would you spend this much on your hair?

So I've recently gone from bleach blonde to brown (natural colour )
It cost me £180 to do so and it faded within a few weeks
My greys have came through in 6 weeks and I'm booked in next week
It's going to cost £130 just to get my roots done and I honestly am tempted just to buy a root touch up kit.
It's not like I'm getting highlights or anything
Can't really afford it either (well I can but I would rather use that money for something else if I could )
What would you do ?
Is it worth £130 ?

No not for just brown. I’d do it myself. I spend £160 every 6/8 weeks but I’ve got highlights and extensions that need refitting

Riverlee · 03/03/2023 13:38

Not £130 every six weeks.

I tend to alternate between hair cut and colour/cut.

tempusername1234 · 03/03/2023 13:38

I wouldn't but then I can't afford £130. We've used the home dye kits and they have been pretty good. I think you are being over charged at the hairdressers though as a quick google suggests it should cost from £65 - £175 for a first time hair colouring.

I pay £120 twice a year for a curly cut. I have noticed that more and more people are embracing the grey and don't bother with 6 weekly appointments any more.

DustyLee123 · 03/03/2023 13:40

Personally I’d do highlights with a view to growing the grey in.

WeeOrcadian · 03/03/2023 13:40

I could, cut wouldn't. For me, that's a ridiculous amount of money to spend on my hair. Not for everyone though. To each their own.

MrsRinaDecker · 03/03/2023 13:40

I’m £75 for a cut and colour (half head of blonde highlights) and aim for every 8 weeks, but can go longer. So it seems a lot to me, but I realise London / southeast prices are a lot more than I pay.

pingading · 03/03/2023 13:42

These are my current bad roots
Do you think I can sort it myself ?
Any recommendations what root kits are good ?
Or would I not get a decent match like hairdresser?

I'm in Newcastle north east England

The problem is that the dye isn't your natural colour if it was or at least closer you wouldn't see roots

pingading · 03/03/2023 13:44

@JennyDarlingRIP my natural colour is very dark brown but as I was light blonde the brown has faded
Although I do like the colour it's faded too
Like a nice brown

Hmm, I probably don't spend £130 a year on my hair.
But thats because I dislike the hairdressers, so am going grey, and only get it cut when it takes too long to dry - 2 or 3 times a year.
So, personally, no. But I think many (most) people would spend more than me!

Mutabiliss · 03/03/2023 13:46

I pay about £100 every 12 weeks for two shades of brown, but with Aveda as I seem to be allergic/reactive to many other dyes including box dye. It's very annoying!

I don't mind my greys showing though, what you have wouldn't bother me at all. My hair is thick and they're sprinkled throughout so I don't have a badger stripe. Towards the end of the 12 weeks I use Colour Wow powder to fill them in a bit.

mastertomsmum · 03/03/2023 13:48

My hair is pepper and salt, but quite grey underneath by the ears. I have my hair coloured every 5 months. A solid colour underneath and a few highlights through all over. Costs about £100. A hairdresser I used to go to persuaded me to go for a full colour. I seemed to go far too often to the hairdressers, the colour looked unnatural, it got darker and darker as he would frequently recommend a full colour not just touching up the roots and it cost me a fortune. I got fed up on every level with this and what I do now looks a lot better, costs less in time and money.

wineymummy · 03/03/2023 13:51

Looks a lot like my colour. I use Medium Brown Nice n Easy. It does lighten after a few weeks but at £6.50 a box it's easy to just re do it.

Tighginn · 03/03/2023 14:12

I would just wash my hair a couple of times a week with Provoke Touch of Brunette, shampoo and conditioner.

pingading · 03/03/2023 14:16

I'm going on holiday in a few weeks so obviously would like a bit of extra spending money for some duty free if possible.
I'm so tempted to get the nice and easy root touch up.

Can2022getanyworse · 03/03/2023 14:29

As pp said, it looks worse as it's so much different to your natural colour.

Have you considered growing it out? Live with it for a few months then have a shorter re-style. You've really not got lots of greys, it's the dolifference in the browns that I would struggle with.

(I grew out really hard to match gingery brown and lived with the two-tone for a while, with some adventurous up-dos, then had quite a bit chopped, it's now shoulder length and the greys don't seem to be as visible!)

SnackyOnassis · 03/03/2023 14:38

No way would I be paying £130 for anything that didn't require bleach and toner. The Josh Wood colours are quite good, rather than a small touch up kit just buy a normal box of colour and make up half a pack at a time, it'll last you longer and still save you a bomb.

sixfoot · 03/03/2023 14:43

I pay £90 every 12 weeks. that seems like a lot!

pingading · 03/03/2023 14:45

This is how it looks fully front facing
I like having the ends lighter and root darker (if that makes sense )
I just don't know how im gonna match the brown to the root colour

elm26 · 03/03/2023 14:50

I'm in south east and pay £80 for an all over warm brunette colour, a cut and a blow dry and finish. I wouldn't pay over that to be honest.

DuvetDownn · 03/03/2023 14:58

Ask your hairdresser for the colour code and then Google what shade you need. I have shiny brown hair and do my roots every couple of weeks with nice and easy root touch up kit. I spend £50 per year.

cunningartificer · 03/03/2023 15:00

I'm going grey (and have been since I was sixteen when I had a streak at the front) and I use semi permanent colour every couple of weeks. My hair is also very dark so I find if I use a colour like casting chocolate brownie then the grey bits go a sort of reddish brown which creates light and movement and it doesn't have that all over flatness home dyed hair can have. I often get compliments about my hair so it must look ok! Worth a try as it washes out if you don't like it after a couple of weeks or faster if you wash more, but otherwise lasts well.

DottieUncBab · 03/03/2023 15:20

The rule I follow is:

  • darker than my natural hair / or sameish tone to natural then do it yourself at home
  • lighter than my natural hair then hair dressers c£110+
I think given you’re not trying to go lighter I’d just do an at home one
