Would you spend this much on your hair?

So I've recently gone from bleach blonde to brown (natural colour )
It cost me £180 to do so and it faded within a few weeks
My greys have came through in 6 weeks and I'm booked in next week
It's going to cost £130 just to get my roots done and I honestly am tempted just to buy a root touch up kit.
It's not like I'm getting highlights or anything
Can't really afford it either (well I can but I would rather use that money for something else if I could )
What would you do ?
Is it worth £130 ?

I've rescheduled for next month but asked for balayage highlights just on half head to hopefully blend everything in
Will do the box roots this month and that next month

These are my current bad roots
Do you think I can sort it myself ?
Any recommendations what root kits are good ?
Or would I not get a decent match like hairdresser?

Sweetheart, that is nothing! Don't sweat it.

You haven't got the grey line, either pluck them out or get a root touch up.

You could sort of smudge on the colour and have a messy parting, I think
you could easily do your roots yourself.
I YouTubed it when we went into lockdown and previously had been spending £50 per month for the same colour I use at home now.
Your hair may go a bit lighter on the ends on your holiday if you’re going somewhere warm which will enhance the look
you like.

purpledalmation · 03/03/2023 17:15

Just buy a semi permanent brown shade from L'Oréal etc, they work really well. Patch test first.

hattie43 · 03/03/2023 17:29

I was charged £236 the last time I had my hair coloured , half head foils and tint roots. I rebooked but cancelled because I'm just not prepared to pay that . I've found a new salon who do it for £129.

Mary54 · 03/03/2023 17:47

Personally wouldn’t spend that much at a hairdresser but everyone has different priorities. For me, its having healthy hair so I don’t colour. Started going grey at 19 but as my natural colour is a light blond it didn’t show for a long time. Now 59 and more white than blond. Invested €20 in a pair of decent hairdresser’s scissors many years ago so I could trim my and DD’s ends. Long hair is fortunately very easy and cheap to maintain 😉

SoCrossAboutThis · 03/03/2023 17:49

No. I just recently had a quote of £140 for an unqualified trainee to put some highlights and a balayage in my hair. I only asked for half highlights but was told I’d need a balayage as well. And toner, and olaplex and an extra £20 for roots (never been charged separate for that before).

CambsAlways · 03/03/2023 17:50

No I certainly wouldn’t I’d buy a home colour

Thisisnotreallymyname · 03/03/2023 17:54

It’s faded because there is blonde under it, as the blond grows out you will be able to colour it yourself as your base colour will be your own brown shade.

girlmeetsboy · 03/03/2023 17:55

Crikey, I box dye once every 2 months and my friend cuts my hair in exchange for a yaki soba from wags twice a year! I couldn't justify £180 but i am lucky to have this choice, however I do spend £150 every 4 months on botox so its all relevant :-)

Okunevo · 03/03/2023 17:58

No I wouldn't spend that and couldn't afford it anyway. I'd just grow out the grey, I was thinking it would be all grey at the roots but it looks fine. I have greys, I don't get spending that much money just to change my hair colour.

helpplease01 · 03/03/2023 18:05

I would ask for a semi permanent tint. It fades, but is more natural and costs much less.

Catsmakemehappy · 03/03/2023 18:07

The issue you will have is the dye will take differently to your roots than to your mid lengths due to the bleach ! Different coke bases and conditions . The bleach makes your hair porous like a sponge so it sucks the colour in but let’s it go very quickly hence the fading . The hairdresser will match your roots with the rest of your hair, a home dye kit wont do this!

Upsidedownagain · 03/03/2023 18:10

In your case OP I'd probably buy dye to match your new colour and put it all over. My natural hair colour is dark brown but parts started going grey in my 30s, especially on the top, so I did that myself for years.

Or I'd try to match the colour and do the roots plus a bit, but it would only cover the greys, not lighten the actual colour, so depends what you want. Darker roots can look fine imo, if they blend with the rest, as yours seems to.

I've been going to the same hairdressers for years (not always same colourist or stylist). The 'boss' advised me to have lighter highlights years ago to avoid the starkness of grey regrowth- it would show after 3 weeks. So basically I went blond, mixed with light brown, plus some of my original colour underneath. I have it redone professionally 2 to 3 times a year. I used to go more often but didn't need new colour every 3 to 4 weeks like when I had dark brown hair, maybe 6 to 8 weeks.

Then I changed to home dyeing it again in between. I used to touch up visible root growth with 2 to 3 blond/ light brown colours. It looked fine. But now I buy (very cheaply) a professional colour my hairdresser recommended from online. It is dark blond. I just put it all over which blends my hair better and covers the greys. It darkens the blond parts initially but they come back through gradually. And doesn't affect the darker parts.

Pipsickl · 03/03/2023 18:16

I wouldn’t spend it every 6-8 weeks, but I would spend it a few times a year.

I have similar hair to you, and between hairdresser visits i do my own roots with an off the shelf medium brown hair dye.

if you haven’t done home dye before, I would get some better gloves and a root brush off eBay to apply the hair dye. All you then need are some hair clips and a black towel (that won’t be ruined by dye)

also I would buy some Olaplex and use regularly if dying own hair (I do once a week treatment)

sometimes I just touch up the roots, and then run some of the leftover colour through the ends ti freshen them up. When I go hairdressers they usually cut it and refresh the colour all over .

FinallyHere · 03/03/2023 18:20

That would depend on how it compared to my budget for all the me grooming things and my current lifestyle.

I've not worn makeup or high heels since the covid lockdowns, which also saves on skin care. I'm having great results from a cheap as chips body creme which I use on my face anytime if needs it.

My days are mostly spent on Teams video meetings. I have soft focus set to make up for no makeup which justifies splurging on my hair.

Blow dry each week and lowlights and trim every four or five weeks, and my usually unruly hair always looks great. I mostly leave the management to my hairdresser who trims and decides the colour and extent of highlights for best effect. I just comb it when I remember and it always looks pretty good. I'm getting older now and the next stage will be hair thinning so I'm enjoying my last years with luxuriant locks while they last.

It means I spend my entire budget on my hair and feel pretty pleased with it.

CrazyLadie · 03/03/2023 18:24

pingading · 03/03/2023 14:45

This is how it looks fully front facing
I like having the ends lighter and root darker (if that makes sense )
I just don't know how im gonna match the brown to the root colour

Is balayage you get doen to your hair? If so the prices for that have gone mental, I'm in aberdeen and looked at getting my hair done, £140 for the dye alone, they now charge for both cut and the dry bits separately 😳 I would shop around if I was you

SwimmingAgainstTheTides · 03/03/2023 18:27

I cut and colour my own, and l get more compliments about my hair than anything else.
I'm 54 and my hair is long, thick and layered. l use a box dye dark blonde, which on my hair is a nice natural light brown shade.

Jackburger · 03/03/2023 18:27

I spend £170 every 10-12 weeks. Highlights, root cover, cut and blow dry (long hair). My greys start appearing after 3 weeks and I do a root touch up 1-2 times in between appointments. I use Clairol root touch up which is good. Also have the spray colour (green tin in Boots can’t remember brand) which is another way of covering greys.

celticprincess · 03/03/2023 18:31

I can’t afford 6 weekly and my cut and colour are about £70 in total. I tend to go every 3-4 months and use a root spray in between .

Daisy62 · 03/03/2023 18:42

When my hair was brown (dyed from grey) and similar shade to yours, I used the Nice n Easy medium brown root touch up and it worked fine. Why not give it a go before spending so much money.

greekyoggy · 03/03/2023 18:42

I would/ do pay for highlights. Every 8 weeks

Lots of people do

Clippp · 03/03/2023 18:46

No, I wouldn't pay £130 for regrowth.

I pay £48 for regrowth every four weeks (more grey then you) and I have very similar coloured hair to you.

For comparison by salon charges £75 for a full head tint (long hair) and £135 for full head a highlights + tint.

justlliloleme · 03/03/2023 18:51

I have similar coloured hair & have it ‘topped up’ every 8 weeks. When the grey starts to show through I just use some root spray. It’s really easy to use & washes out so doesn’t effect any colour the hairdresser puts on.
