Would you spend this much on your hair?

So I've recently gone from bleach blonde to brown (natural colour )
It cost me £180 to do so and it faded within a few weeks
My greys have came through in 6 weeks and I'm booked in next week
It's going to cost £130 just to get my roots done and I honestly am tempted just to buy a root touch up kit.
It's not like I'm getting highlights or anything
Can't really afford it either (well I can but I would rather use that money for something else if I could )
What would you do ?
Is it worth £130 ?

Put in a colour from pharmacy I have done the same but changed back to blonde but when it was dark I used L'Oréal colours the shine was fab

ellamar1 · 03/03/2023 18:53

Same thing happens to me the grey was showing within a few weeks of having a salon colour and with a cut it is expensive. I went cold turkey 18 months ago and stopped using dye I waited till my grey streaks got to my jawline before having a cut.

This is how it looks fully front facing
I like having the ends lighter and root darker (if that makes sense )
I just don't know how im gonna match the brown to the root colour

This is a very good colour actually the lowlights are done very well so I wouldn’t necessarily ditch the hairdresser maybe ask them what to do to stick to a lower budget. The lowlights (or whatever the technical term is!) are gorgeous!

go onto nutrisse web page and have a play about on their virtual page.
you post a picture as you have done here, choose a colour and you can see what you will look like.
I personally would go for a base of a 6

Icantfindmykeys · 03/03/2023 19:10

Im a former hairdresser.. your initial colour from bleach blonde to brown is a colour collection and is a tricky job and worth every penny. It’s not a straightforward job as you have to replace your warmer tones before you can add the depth. If this is not done correctly it will through up a lot of ash and look green and literally wash out.

The colour you say is fading will do as your hair is going to be very porous after that much colour. You need to be using s good conditioner and regular treatments. I would personally go and buy Oliplex shampoo conditioner and treatment - expensive but will save you in the long run.

The reason follow up colours seem pricey is because you will be having colour applied to both the regrowth and midlength and ends.

if you are worried about the cost why not embrace your white hair (hardly any) and grow out the colour? You could then just use a conditioning colour that washes out on the ends to help with the fading.

I'd just do home one for roots. I have my hair coloured/highlighted every other appointment and pay around £150 for that and the cut. The in-between appointments I just have the cut and it's around £40. Over the year, call it £600. I probably wouldn't have it cut so often, but my hair is short, so 1cm regrowth makes a difference

ScotsBluebell · 03/03/2023 19:12

My ex hairdresser husband does mine for me. Couldn't afford salon prices. He was exceptionally good at it, (award winning) back in the day till he changed careers because he disliked it so much. He reckons home dyes are now better than salon dyes., mostly because they have to be. We did the skin test of course, but then he puts it on dry hair. We use l'Oreal Excellence. He also says you need to be a shade or so lighter than your natural colour, otherwise it looks wrong. Going blonde is more complicated with bleach etc, but I'm just mid brown with a lot of gray now.

Ivebeenframed · 03/03/2023 19:20

Jeez! I couldn't justify spending £180 on hair colour. I started going grey in my early twenties so have been dying my hair for years now. I have had the same hairdresser for many years who comes to me every 5-6 weeks and still only charges £10 for a cut and blow dry. I dye my own hair, nice n easy mixed in a bowl and applied with a brush - results are always good

New30 · 03/03/2023 19:21

You can easily get a decent cut and root touch in the north east for less than £100. I used to pay a couple of hundred in Newcastle city centre but moving out of the city it can be less than half.

I really think there are little gems of good hairdressers around who don’t charge the earth. Ask around for recommendations locally.

Sillyname63 · 03/03/2023 19:28

I would say try it once and see if you like it you have nothing to loose, I am sure your hairdresser won't cast you out and say don't darken my door again.😂 Also try John Frieda Brunette shampoo and conditioner they really help keeping the colour for longer.

Dee00 · 03/03/2023 19:37

If I was you I would. I think hairdressers always make your colour so much nicer, and personally I think it’s worth every penny. I used to spend well over £200 every 6-8 weeks, my hairdresser left and started her own business and now only charges me £120 for the same and that includes olaplex.
Treat yourself, your worth it!

pingading · 03/03/2023 19:38

@Icantfindmykeys that's the thing I'm not actually wanting my mid lengths or ends coloured-I like how it's faded and the colour it is now.
I only want my roots doing to cover the greys

DuvetDownn · 03/03/2023 19:38

Surely the roots will just cost about £50?

RosyappleA · 03/03/2023 19:41

Loreal has those box dyes that are semi-permanent if that’s even the word for it bust basically they are like getting a gloss at a hairdresser. They are brilliant for this sort of thing and make hair so much more manageable. They wash out after a month anyway so don’t worry about it going wrong. If you are tight on money do this.

scoobydoo1971 · 03/03/2023 19:43

When I strip all the colour off my hair, I am white. It happened to everyone on my Dad's side of the family very young and I started going grey at 25. I refused to pay for a salon every few weeks, but I did meet a hairdresser who gave me a good explanation of how to dye hair at home to a semi-professional standard. This is not for highlights, lowlights or anything fancy. But flat dye on my hair works better if you use salon grade hair dye. It is also better for your hair. I buy this on Amazon (Marjirel). Every few months I use dye stripper to start from scratch and stop build up. If you are rapidly getting roots, you could try massaging those with a good semi-permanent. It will blend with other dyes and give you highlights over the grey.

CountryMouse22 · 03/03/2023 19:46

I pay £52 for a cut and top up of colour on roots. Small salon in a local village!

SylvieB74 · 03/03/2023 19:47

I’d just get a level 6 brown or goldey brown and do it myself, put it on the roots then put all through 5/10 minutes before you rinse it off

Nsky62 · 03/03/2023 19:48

Pay £25 dry cut every 6 weeks, box colour done by friend

Mandyjack · 03/03/2023 19:52

There's no way I could afford it so no I wouldn't pay it. I think even if I could I wouldn't pay that for something that only last a few weeks. Use a cheaper hair dresser or buy a root kit

BridieConvert · 03/03/2023 19:59

That sounds insane to me. I am £55 every 6 weeks for a cut and colour. Granted my hairdresser is mobile so that may make her a bit cheaper but I'd never pay more than £80 for my hair.

PinkSyCo · 03/03/2023 20:03

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 03/03/2023 13:38

I pay £120 twice a year for a curly cut. I have noticed that more and more people are embracing the grey and don't bother with 6 weekly appointments any more.

Been thinking about looking for a hairdresser that specialises in curly hair, but I’m on a pretty tight budget. Does it make much of a difference do you think?

PleaseJustText · 03/03/2023 20:07

I pay £190 every three months. My hairdresser is bloody talented and can make a colour stretch a long way.

OneCup · 03/03/2023 20:11

I'd do it myself personally.
I mean 8 times a year is like 1200 quid I'd rather go on holiday!

mummylondon16 · 03/03/2023 20:11

Your hair in that pic looks lovely. Get the root touch up, try it. Worst that can happen is you don’t like it and have to go back. Block colour Isn’t the same as hairdresser colour with lowlights etc but you can always go a couple of times a year if you fancy/can afford
im blonde and pay £120 every 8 weeks for highlights and treatment but if I suited dark hair I would do it myself

verdantverdure · 03/03/2023 20:13

I could've bought a two bedroom flat at least with what I've spent colouring my hair at salons as an adult so I say end this madness now.
