So I've recently gone from bleach blonde to brown (natural colour )
It cost me £180 to do so and it faded within a few weeks
My greys have came through in 6 weeks and I'm booked in next week
It's going to cost £130 just to get my roots done and I honestly am tempted just to buy a root touch up kit.
It's not like I'm getting highlights or anything
Can't really afford it either (well I can but I would rather use that money for something else if I could )
What would you do ?
Is it worth £130 ?

The rule I follow is:

  • darker than my natural hair / or sameish tone to natural then do it yourself at home
  • lighter than my natural hair then hair dressers c£110+
I think given you’re not trying to go lighter I’d just do an at home one

This is my rule too!

Your hair is barely noticeable for the grey to be honest. I look like a skunk down my parting when mine comes through. I’m a natural brunette but my hairdresser said I’m over 75% grey now but it’s more white than grey. We have tried everything from going very light brown, having highlights etc but I prefer my hair darker so it’s roots when I can afford and root spray in between.

I’m a teacher and one of my little ones pointed out my grey last week. He said - you do know your hair is going grey? Then he said ‘you do know that means you’re getting old!!’ The TA sat behind him nearly wet herself as he kept going on. It’s an sen class and I don’t take offence. Nothing my own kids haven’t said!!

Missingpop · 03/03/2023 20:19

You either pay it or have lovely grey roots depending on which look you prefer really; failing that get yourself down to round pound & buy a diy kit doesn’t take a ticket scientist to lob some dye on your head…. Job done x

I pay £130 for my roots to be bleached every 8 weeks and 3 colours weaved throughout my hair and usually takes 4 to
5 hours. I'm London borders and nothing is cheap here!

Do you have a Sally's near you? The staff are really helpful and will help you pick out a professional colour to do at home. It will cost about £40 at first as you need dye and developer but the developer will last ages! I would try Redkin shades EQ. It will blend/cover the greys and gradually fade out so you won't get huge amounts of colour build up like you would using a permanent shade. Will help stretch out the time between colour appointments.

Calyx72 · 03/03/2023 20:38

Has anyone said eSalon? They are brilliant
They will do colour match via photos and then send you the whole kit and instructions
I got my sister to do mine but sometimes did it myself, easily.
They send more every so many weeks (you choose, you can pause or cancel anytime)
I absolutely recommend them Grin

I have stopped dyeing my hair and am embracing the grey but would use eSalon if I changed my mind. So reasonable for price and I used to have brown roots and lighter for the ends, saved a fortune at the hairdresser.
(I had just done it before this photo)

Just remembered - I originally had balayage at the hairdresser then used eSalon after that. The photo was after about a year from the professional balayage

QueefQueen80s · 03/03/2023 20:40

God what an expense. I just box dye it once a month.

Kally64 · 03/03/2023 20:46

I too was fed up with constantly paying out for my hair to be done as it was an all over tint every 6 weeks. I changed hairdressers and said I only wanted it done every 8-10 weeks. So now I have a half head of foils, cut and finish which costs £150, because I have the foils and a toner the greys just blend in. Personally I wouldn’t use a root touch up as it might just spoil the look. A few foils through the parting and a toner might be better 😊

Tuskanini · 03/03/2023 20:51

If brown is your ‘natural colour’, why is some other colour growing through? Who’s convinced you that your natural colour is unacceptable?

pingading · 03/03/2023 20:53

My natural colour is dark brown
That's the colour growing through with mixed greys

I actually can't see any grey in your roots.
I went lighter than my natural colour to hide greys. I often use a light brown spray between hair appointments.

Badbudgeter · 03/03/2023 21:03

I’d recommend a semi permanent. Then I use a colour glaze on top for extra shine £20 quid every six weeks or so

Cactuslover88 · 03/03/2023 21:11

Hi OP, my hair is very similar to yours in colour and I too have the same amount of greys coming in. For the last few years I was paying £80 every 6 weeks to have a coloured gloss applied to my roots. It’s a semi permanent colour but lasts the 6 weeks well enough. Post covid prices have gone up and I’ve got to the point I loath having to pay so much for just root colour! I researched and found that Sallys sell the Redken Shades EQ range that headmasters use. It’s £20 for a large 1ltr bottle of developer and £20 for the colour which is a 100ml bottle. The colour and developer you mix at a 50-50 ratio and I find 60mls total is enough for me to touch up my roots (so that gives an idea of how long the bottles last). I followed Daniella Benita on insta and YouTube and she gives some great colour mix formulas for various “toners” which is enough to cover the greys for 6 weeks. I also found that for better grey coverage you want to use at least 50% of an “NB” colour code in your mix. I highly recommend it and if you’re a bit scared to try fully permanent colour at home I think this is a great shout. They do have a Redken permanent colour range but I haven’t felt the need to switch to it yet. Your hair looks a bit lighter than mine with your blonde you mentioned so I’d think level 7 colours are what you’re after. I used to use the permanent colours like granite and nice and easy but the Redken shades EQ range is so much better for your hair and looks really natural. Hope that’s helpful!

MonderMomen77 · 03/03/2023 21:17

During lockdown I used e-salon, you complete a questionnaire and send photos of your hair, what you hope to achieve, eg highlights root's, any issues etc, they send out a tailor made colour. It's salon quality and definitely better quality than box dyes. Highly recommend.

Mantissatopower4 · 03/03/2023 21:28

Last time my hair was cut professionally was when I got married 18 years ago. I have long hair and cut it myself. We are not well off!

BMrs · 03/03/2023 21:31

Jackburger · 03/03/2023 18:27

I spend £170 every 10-12 weeks. Highlights, root cover, cut and blow dry (long hair). My greys start appearing after 3 weeks and I do a root touch up 1-2 times in between appointments. I use Clairol root touch up which is good. Also have the spray colour (green tin in Boots can’t remember brand) which is another way of covering greys.

@Jackburger what do you use to touch up your roots please?

namechange9374 · 03/03/2023 21:34

It sounds very over priced I spend £60 every 10 weeks for roots and highlights. I used to go to a more expensive hairdresser but again they were £80/90.

MarvellousMonsters · 03/03/2023 21:35

No. A box dye will cost a tenner and for a brown colour will look fine. Who has £130 to spend on their hair??

alwaysoutdoors · 03/03/2023 21:39

I had my roots done last weekend for £35. That was just for a roots touch up, no cut. It's a nice place too. She charged £110 for Balayage, cut and style.

Garrie · 03/03/2023 21:39

The ten minute touch up kit is brilliant.

I'm in Newcastle north east England

I'm in the NE and use The Attic at Lobley Hill. I pay less than half that for colour wash and cut. I think you're being over charged.

HappyAsASandboy · 03/03/2023 21:53

I wouldn't spend that much money (or anywhere near it).

After a recommendation on here, I have started to use Plantur39 Brown shampoo. I've used it twice, and it's taken my greying mousey hair (far far far more grey than yours) to a soft blondy/brown. I am impressed, and assured that when I want to go grey grey I can just stop using it and it will fade out (no line of doom to grow out like with dye.

It's about £10 a bottle. I would try that before you faff with home dye or commit to salon prices.

Mamaneedsgin · 03/03/2023 21:54

I’ve started going to the local hairdressing college to get my roots done in between my cut and balayage. It takes a long time (3 hours was the longest) but at £12 for the regrowth colour and blow dry it’s saved me a fortune and they are carefully supervised.

LoisLane66 · 03/03/2023 21:57

No, it isn't. I've coloured my hair since the age of 16: and been every colour...well, not REALLY every colour but very dark brown through all the reds to platinum blonde. That's 62 years of colour and my hair is still thick and I still colour it.

Nowadays and for the past several years, it's been Garnier Nutrisse, more recently, Dark Quartz or Deep Reddish Brown and I manage doing it very well at home. It's delivered on subscription every 6 weeks by Amazon, which is by far the cheapest.
I had a cut and blow dry on my just below ear length hair last week at a little local place and was stunned to pay £61. It's cheaper than that at Toni & Guy.
Use a decent hair masque every couple of weeks and wrap a towel around your head while hoovering or whatever. It keeps your hair in tip-top condition.
