Would you spend this much on your hair?

So I've recently gone from bleach blonde to brown (natural colour )
It cost me £180 to do so and it faded within a few weeks
My greys have came through in 6 weeks and I'm booked in next week
It's going to cost £130 just to get my roots done and I honestly am tempted just to buy a root touch up kit.
It's not like I'm getting highlights or anything
Can't really afford it either (well I can but I would rather use that money for something else if I could )
What would you do ?
Is it worth £130 ?

If you can afford it, I would. I spend £100 every 9 weeks for trim and colour. I won't do it myself.

I'm a Leo, so my mane is my pride and joy.

Hated it in lockdown when I had to do it myself or let the grey grow through. I opted to do it myself.

Our hair grows on average half an inch per month, hence why you're seeing grey

LoisLane66 · 03/03/2023 21:59

Gosh! Having looked at your photo, I can't see roots girl, that's just your scalp. I only do mine when it's not fit to be seen outside. 😂

LaughingCat · 03/03/2023 22:06

I tend to spend £190 on my hair every nine weeks or so, to avoid the dreaded roots, but mine’s a caramel and blonde balayage jobbie and I expect a toner, hair mask and a tidy up of my cut for that, as well.

I wouldn’t if it’s not working for you, OP

Hmm, I've got a cut and colour booked for tomorrow, now I'm wondering if I should just get the cut and dye my roots myself🤔

Is it really rude to turn up for a cut and colour appointment but say uou only want the cut doing?

No. I pay £90 for a cut and colour and my whites (they’re not even greys! 😩) come through in around 6 weeks too and I can’t justify (nor afford) the cost that often.

Especially as the salon I go to isn’t exactly local and is a good 45 minute drive away.

So I get a Garnier home colour to sort the roots out in between and get it done every few months instead.

browneyes77 · 03/03/2023 23:00

pingading · 03/03/2023 13:42

These are my current bad roots
Do you think I can sort it myself ?
Any recommendations what root kits are good ?
Or would I not get a decent match like hairdresser?

Also, I use Garnier Nutrisse and it isn’t too dissimilar to your dyed colour. I use Iced Coffee 4.15.

I have very dark brown hair and like it to be a more rich dark reddish brown. I find this colour very similar to the colour I have done at my hairdressers.

CatAndHisKit · 03/03/2023 23:06

Medium / golden brown by Clairol is very good - looks glossy and never flat, and there's a mixing bowl (less runny than bottles)!
I use that, the only thing is that it does fade in the sun (but I have very fine hair), but that's a summer problem.

queensonia · 03/03/2023 23:12

I have never paid a hairdresser for a colour in my life and have always done my own. Clairol nice n easy do either permanent colour (with ammonia) or Demi permanent which lasts for about 24 washes. You can mix two colours together if you cant find your exact shade. You’ll also need a thin tail comb and a colour brush so shouldn’t cost you much more than a tenner to do your own. The spray root touch ups are also pretty good

Sparkleshine21 · 03/03/2023 23:36

You need to do what I do and honestly
you won’t go to the salon again - everyone asks me where I had my hair done and I just do it myself! Used to be a hairdressers addict too.

get a dye that matches your root and buy a bowl and brush. Section your hair and paint onto the root then with a fine comb, comb through to the end. It’s called a faded root and it honestly looks professionally done and blends really well.

Sparkleshine21 · 03/03/2023 23:37

Do it in fine sections btw, not chunky!

wineymummy · 03/03/2023 13:51

Looks a lot like my colour. I use Medium Brown Nice n Easy. It does lighten after a few weeks but at £6.50 a box it's easy to just re do it.

Same exactly! Looks much more natural than hairdresser colour imo. I don't leave it on for very long, perhaps 3 to 4 mins max. Comes with lovely conditioner too. Literally what it says on the tin... nice and easy!

mastertomsmum · 03/03/2023 23:59

Kally64 · 03/03/2023 20:46

I too was fed up with constantly paying out for my hair to be done as it was an all over tint every 6 weeks. I changed hairdressers and said I only wanted it done every 8-10 weeks. So now I have a half head of foils, cut and finish which costs £150, because I have the foils and a toner the greys just blend in. Personally I wouldn’t use a root touch up as it might just spoil the look. A few foils through the parting and a toner might be better 😊

This is similar to my approach, but not as often and I don’t pay that much

So little difference in colour, all you need is a few foils every now and then to warm up your colour

Iwannabeacrocodilehunter · 04/03/2023 02:51

£130 every six weeks! Ouch. Yes, definitely do it yourself.

I box dye my own hair a chocolate brown and it’s lovely (well, good enough for me). And I splurge and get a dry trim once a year 😂

I think a root touch up kit will do the job perfectly well and save you a fortune. Good idea to ask for the code and Google the colour you need. Alternatively my sibling uses that online hair dye company that analyses photos you send them. Can’t remember what it’s called, but her hair always looks fabulous.

WhoCaresNotMe123 · 04/03/2023 06:04

If I were you, I’d start doing it myself as it’s super easy. Firstly, don’t buy the at home kits. Use the same stuff the professionals use by going to the hair wholesalers - members of the public are allowed it use it. You then buy the colour and the peroxide yourself and mix it up at home. Your hairdresser can tell you the colour (it’ll be a number like 7/0 and 7/4 for example) she used so you’ll be able to get the right colour no problem. You can also buy yourself a tint bowl and brush from the wholesalers.
Then all you’ll need to do is touch up your roots with the colour every 6 weeks or so. You’ll leave the colour on the roots for 30 minutes, but for the last 10 minutes of that, drag the colour through to the ends just to brighten it all up. You’ll easily be able to find a YouTube video showing you how to section the hair. This is what I do and I save myself an absolute fortune!

Campervangirl · 04/03/2023 07:12

I have balayage and I do my brown roots with root touch up, I use Superdrugs own brand as it seems to last longer than the Clairol, buy a brush for applying the colour as the brush you get in the box is rubbish.
Start at your parting then start sectioning and don't go too far down your hair.
Seriously, you are going to save a fortune doing it yourself

DownByTheOcean · 04/03/2023 08:38

I’m in Tynemouth - gorgeous hairdresser in the Church, £85. I’m the same colour as you. I get my full colour every 8 weeks but need to touch up with Root Touch up medium brown after 5 weeks. I use half a box each time and apply sparingly and drag down the hair. My hairdresser has commented in the past she can she colour build up which we don’t want obviously so sparingly and only when needed. Batiste Dry Shampoo in brown is also your friend.

LovelyLisa2 · 04/03/2023 09:33

I pay that to have my hair coloured and £90 to have a cut and blow dry.

KTMeetsTheRsUptown · 04/03/2023 11:25

You could use something like L'Oréal Magic Retouch spray inbetween visits to hairdressers. I used to use it but now I've gone from brown to blonde and mine cost £80 for roots so £130 quite a lot. Shop around hairdressers as mine can be half price as others hairdressers in my area (Walthamstow, London)

Dipsydoodlenoodle · 04/03/2023 11:48

Last time I went to the hairdresssers was about 10 years ago l, so I certainty wouldn't. I have really straight, long hair, so very easy for someone to trim for me. Cut with expensive sharp dog grooming scissors 😳.

LifesTooShortForYourNonsense · 04/03/2023 12:21

if you are going back to natural colour, try shampoo with Polygonum Multiflorum (look on Amazon). Couple of times a week and it keeps greys away mostly, have one or two now but I’m mid-forties. It’s not great shampoo (drying) and you do need to use for several months before a difference, but no dying fees.

Justbefair · 04/03/2023 14:14

If it's just a root touch up one colour then absolutely yes home dye. That is a lot of money you paid, there are much cheaper yet good Hairsressers out there! I pay £47 for a full head of 2 colours and cut then do a root touch up with a lightener or go to Hairsressers anout 10 weeks later and that's £37, so alternating works for me. I would have a look around for a different hairdresser. Xxx

angela99999 · 04/03/2023 14:25

I used to have to go to get my roots done every three weeks and a cut every six (I'm pretty grey) and it was ridiculously expensive. Have simply stopped going there and have someone come to the house every few weeks. She cuts my hair well, leaves enough colour with me to do a T-section colour once or twice between visits and charges me £50. I think many hairdressers are such a con, your colour shouldn't fade so fast.

pingading · 04/03/2023 16:33

Got my root kit today
Going to do it soon
I will let you know how it turns out
Fingers crossed please ha ha
