So I've recently gone from bleach blonde to brown (natural colour )
It cost me £180 to do so and it faded within a few weeks
My greys have came through in 6 weeks and I'm booked in next week
It's going to cost £130 just to get my roots done and I honestly am tempted just to buy a root touch up kit.
It's not like I'm getting highlights or anything
Can't really afford it either (well I can but I would rather use that money for something else if I could )
What would you do ?
Is it worth £130 ?

I'm going on holiday in a few weeks so obviously would like a bit of extra spending money for some duty free if possible.
I'm so tempted to get the nice and easy root touch up.

Go for that. Super quick and it’s done.

I have bright red dyed hair. I’ve been using John Frieda Radiant Red shampoo and conditioner which they describe as red boosting. My hair isn’t the same exact shade as when I dyed it in early Dec but it’s still a really nice red and no where near as faded as usual.
They do a similar shampoo and conditioner for brunette’s which would be worth looking at.

CottonSock · 03/03/2023 15:27

I think it looks nice as it is.

It is for this very reason I learnt to cut & colour my own hair. Now it's super cheap. I'll never go back.

Shylo · 03/03/2023 15:29

I’d go to a hairdresser to get my roots matches but £130 is so expensive - I get my roots done every 6 weeks and it’s £50

DerekFaker · 03/03/2023 15:30

Absolutely no fucking way!

pingading · 03/03/2023 15:32

It's crazy because when I got it dyed from blonde to brunette I didn't like the colour.
It just looked like a box dye and that was over £150 for that
It looked much better when it faded to a more natural colour.

You can buy the professional stuff off ebay. Look into root smudges on YouTube to blend your roots into the lighter colour. I buy the brand Matrix. Its about £10 for the colour and you'll need the developer which is about £10 for a massive bottle. Buy a little bowl and application brush too. Save yourself a fortune.

Just research the colours and do test strands on bits of your hair from underneath before the full application.

Farmersweeklyreader · 03/03/2023 15:40

I use the nice and easy root touch up kit, it’s usually about £6 in boots. My hair is similar colour to yours, I would use a 5 or a 6 (always pick the shade lighter than you think you need)
You don’t get a lot of dye in the root touch up kit, just enough to do the roots on the top of your head, not all over if that makes sense.
I’m happy with the results it gives and it always looks blended with the rest of my hair.

pingading · 03/03/2023 15:41

I think I'm going to just use the clariol touch up
Would you go for light golden brown or medium golden brown ?
As hair dye goes so much darker on me
I don't want the ash brown
Or do I just get light brown ?

Your hair looks absolutely fine in the front facing photo, I wouldn't think you need anything doing to it at all, let alone £130 worth!

I have balayage and the root colour is my own, I do have a few greys but that's fine by me. I just get the end colour done twice a year. It's a quite cost effective way of having colour but you need to get a really good match to your natural colour in the first instance or just grow your own colour in over time and accept that takes time (which is what I did).

@Farmersweeklyreader that's really really helpful Thankyou
What is the shade you use ? Would that be light brown or medium brown ?

Always go lighter. I've got very dark brown hair and my hairdresser often uses 6.0 ( light brown) for my roots, anything darker goes witchy.

DuvetDownn · 03/03/2023 15:47

This is medium golden brown

MoneyInTheBananaStand · 03/03/2023 15:48

Agree always go lighter. I used to use 5 on my (dark brown) hair but over time it started to look really harsh, now I use 6 and it gives a much better effect.

Blossomandbee · 03/03/2023 15:48

I would get the medium brown if you like the roots a bit darker, plus I find the lighter browns don't take as well on grey hairs.
I was reading up about colouring grey hairs, and apparently a neutral brown (rather than a golden brown for example) covers them better as it has more of the different colour pigments.
Also I find the root touch up kits expensive for the amount you get. I buy a normal dye and just mix up half if I'm only doing my roots. You can buy a hair dye brush and bowl sets from places like Poundland.

pingading · 03/03/2023 15:49

Thanks everyone root kit it is
Will save me a fortune this month

@DuvetDownn your hair looks lovely
I love the colour

I pay £110 every 10 weeks. I have dyed red hair. I used to have it cut every 7 weeks but I couldn't afford the expense. I think my hairdresser just does it better than me plus it's a hassle doing myself (and I feel guilty lol)

tiktokoclock · 03/03/2023 15:55

Going forward, with your lighter ends I'd be looking to get some highlights for grey blending purposes. Keep the dark brown base colour with ash blonde balayage and highlights. That should keep it lower maintenance.

If you can do that rather than a home-dye kit which might give you dark brown banding. I speak from experience on that one.

StillWantingADog · 03/03/2023 15:56

No. I do a semi permanent box dye every month or so. Costs £7. Not currently but have had highlights in the past but not more often that every 4/5 months.

No point paying silly money if it will fade. It is worth paying for any kind of bleaching/lightening that won't.

dizzydizzydizzy · 03/03/2023 15:58

Good decision, OP. I've just spent £800 (economy one way, premium the other) for a return flight to the Caribbean, which sounds like quite a bit less than you were thinking of spending on your hair every year.

PS your hair does look good.

This is the shade I have at the moment. I would use a shade lighter than you think you need if hair dye usually comes out darker on your own hair.

Farmersweeklyreader · 03/03/2023 16:09

Just to note, the 5 looks chocolate brown on the box but doesn’t come out that dark on my hair. My hair colour is very much like @DuvetDownn ’s colour (beautiful by the way)

bonzaitree · 03/03/2023 16:14

It depends on your budget OP. If you can afford it and you want to get it done then go for it.
