Clemmie Hooper Facing Midwifery Misconduct Hearing

I've not yet seen any other threads on this.

It's not yet clear why there's a heating but it would be interesting to read the decision by the Nursing and Midwifery Council when it's posted online. The hearing ends 8th March.

I'm wondering if the racism she trolled with played out in her work?

Of course it's awful to say anyway, but the fact she had CB on her podcast opening up about her traumatic birth experience not long before posted that is absolutely heartbreaking.

Alexandra Heminsley saying what most people think

Exactly. I wish more people were talking about it rather than thinking about it. There's some very important lessons about race and healthcare here that people who defend her are completely glossing over.

@Nedmund indeed

Leftoverssandwich · 08/03/2023 11:42

‘Self-directed learning’ feels like a very low bar. Given that she’d already supposedly done that, and remained ignorant of a fairly major stereotype that women of colour are labelled with, perhaps something more structured, or some mentoring, might be more reassuring for her patients?

Mangomingo · 08/03/2023 11:48

The NMC bring far more BAME nurses and midwives to book than white ones. They keep doing enquiries into themselves and coming up with the answers that BAME nurses and midwives are sanctioned more often and more harshly than white ones because more BAME HCP are referred to them. Oh well that answers that then. No racism to see here anyone!
They were never going to do the right thing here I don’t think.

Bookist · 08/03/2023 11:48

If anyone wants to know how Clemmie actually feels about CB and women of colour just take a long look at the image of the two of them back up the thread. CB looks open, smiling and confident. Clemmie couldn't look more fed up and her body language is awful. She's actively leaning her body away and twisting her torso away from Candice. Her right arm is completely blocking off Candice too. It's horrible.

Mangomingo · 08/03/2023 11:56

Candice looks awkward AF I think there. Just a huge load of tension in that room! CBs mum slagged off Clemmie later when it all came to light saying she’d been rude and unpleasant to Candice at that podcast recording.

Bookist · 08/03/2023 12:06

I think Candice is trying to look polite in the photo. Didn't realise Clemmie had actually been rude to Candice, but looking at Clemmie's body language and cheesed off expression it's no surprise. I don't believe Clemmie gave a shiny shit about Candice's story or trying to improve outcomes for pregnant women of colour. Clemmie was just ticking a box for the 'Gram.

MarmadukeSpillageEsquire · 08/03/2023 12:27

@Mangomingo I was just about to post a link to the latest one of these (yes there's been one out this year already!) that encompasses all HCP regulators, but you've summed it up accurately enough there 😕

Nimblesandbimbles · 08/03/2023 14:55

Well I expect @Everyonesinvited is happy with the outcome 🙄

What can we do to change this? How can we get this looked into more seriously? I genuinely want to know. Also, do you know where the stats are to be found? If no one is talking about that either, I think it's time someone, somewhere starts harping on about it. Even if I have to start trying to flog my own opinion pieces.

I still think it's wild that someone can say:

  • They didn't know what they wrote was racist, after a book review on race and a podcast episode with CB
  • Their family were being attacked online so they trolled their influencer friends to the point they did the same
  • That they were ill and that's why they did it/why it went so far
  • That this whole thing has really impacted them and they've suffered emotionally because of it. I can't find the article for anymore but that may just be me. Everyonesinvited clearly read it.

I have a feeling the last two reasons are why the media have not said more.Their representation has played a blinder.

The "apology" is followed by excuses, then a complaint that she's been impacted. I'm sure it will be the same when the SM pages go up again. The whole, 'I'm learning, I'll do better, here's some stats on maternal outcomes for black and brown mothers and babies' will be wheeled out. Maybe even a performative large donation to fund charities doing research or to change in those maternal outcomes would have been more respectable. At least that would have acknowledged it and not hidden from it via pleading ignorance.

What is interesting is that one of her fellow influencer friends who was bullied by her online said at the time that she had contacted Clemmie and she was still pretending not to know about it, no apology personal or otherwise pretty much until forced to. I feel like that says it all.

Google Melanie Hayes as well, nurse who didn’t get struck off for calling her black colleagues “spear carriers”. Judge eventually ordered NMC to do so.

Mangomingo · 08/03/2023 15:51

And if you google NMC racist you will find lots of personal accounts of BAME (esp black) nurses and midwives who feel racism played a role in the their referral and/or journey through the NMC process.

BeforetheFlood · 08/03/2023 15:51

The fact that she made a big thing about reading the Reni Eddo Lodge book and posted it on her grid suggests to me that she's all about surface performance of 'the right thing' and either can't be bothered to engage with the deeper issues, or thinks it's all a bit of fuss about nothing. So anything she does to try to find her way back has got to be demonstrably more than just performative virtue signalling.

Shock I'm astounded!!

Thanks. I'll be doing some research!

When she posted about reading it, she said something along the lines of it making her realise how wrong some of her thinking had been. But when questioned on what exactly the book had enlightened her on, she failed to answer.

A cynic would think she never read it of course, in which case her continued ignorance is not failure to understand but failure to engage.

Bookist · 08/03/2023 17:19

I do not believe she ever even read the book. She just made sure she posed prettily with it because , well you know, everyone else was on the 'Gram.

Clemmie isn't evil. She's just your classic Mean Girl character, shallow often spiteful and totally dismissive if you don't fit into her group. There are no genuine friendships in her group just varying degrees of status and ownership of the correct material possessions.

Where can we see the hearing report? Can't see it on NMC

It normally takes a month or so for the full report to appear on the website. At some point they will publish a batch normally under the relevant months heading.

Gigwidow · 09/03/2023 12:30

Caution order- 1 year. It's online now. Just reading what that means...

Leftoverssandwich · 09/03/2023 13:28

Basically it’s the absolute least serious sanction the NMC could have passed down, and given that she admitted 3 of the 4 charges, they couldn’t take no further action. So it’s as light as they could go and means nothing at all.

If she were to apply for promotion (or a new job) in the next year it would be disclosable and might possibly cause an issue. But if she intends to do neither, then she can carry on.
