Thread 5 - TalkExiles: "The Planet Goes On Being Round"

1000 replies

Kucinghitam · 07/02/2023 14:43

Continuation of previous lifeboat threads (thread 4).

Gather here all ye refugees from the JTT Flat Earth Society, welcome to the reassuringly oblate spheroid of MN! Ye all already know the answers to the questions "How the heck do I format my post?" "Why can't I edit my typos?" "What do those acronyms mean?" and most importantly, "Where is everybody that I used to know?"

So really we're all here just to chat randomly.

If anyone there points this out I'll tell em that they chased the women away 😁

I hope you get the chance to do that, mach!

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 07/03/2023 12:31

Women's sex-based right to shut up and keep out of the way while the men (and a few handmaidens) do all the talking?

there's a lot of it about, hooray for mumsnet

bignosebignose · 07/03/2023 12:32

I've posted on it a few times and was intending to answer some comments from last night this morning and then just caught myself thinking "why bother?" We've already been through the arguments. Somehow it's now no longer a thread of hate even though it seems to be gradually less and less about sex-based rights and more about questioning whether trans is a real thing or not. I think there are posters there who genuinely believe that this incarnation of the thread is of a higher tone than the one we all lived in. Maybe best just to let them crack on with it as I'd originally expected to.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 07/03/2023 12:36

I looked in on the first few days after the change of management and then decided it was too dull to waste time with. When I've gone to the site since then to visit a friendly corner I've been fascinated to see how rapidly it and a few navel-gazing threads were growing.

I doubt there's anything worth reading on any of them.

Yeah, you're right.

The slow worms hiss when you rescue them

You clearly have a feistier breed of worms down your way, our Surrey worms have never noticeably hissed.

They have Roman snails to ear in my compost, though, so perhaps they're just refined.

duc748 · 07/03/2023 12:57

@angelico53

The thought once came into my head any years ago (you know, the way they do) that The Nightfly was exactly the sort of music Leopold and Loeb would have listened to. And you know how it is, once you've thought it, you can't unthink it...

I like to think that Fagen would have approved, though.

There are, and they don't seem to realise that all their killer talking points have been brought up and challenged effectively before. None of them really seem to have grappled with the issues particularly deeply.

MavisMcMinty · 07/03/2023 13:05

We are going to need a new thread soon, @Kucinghitam .

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 07/03/2023 13:21

re 'killer talking points' the last one I read before giving up was some twonk pointing out that the silly women should realise that it's 'cis men' they should be afraid of, not 'trans men'. I didn't bother staying to ask what was so okay about being raped by Isla or Barbie.

mach2 · 07/03/2023 13:27

Well, I won't be posting anything. I'm blocked but not for anything GC - probably using the word "Honky".

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 07/03/2023 13:28

you're WHAT? from the whole site or just tat thread?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 07/03/2023 13:29

That's a shame, I thought your posts drilling down into the pseudoscientific nature of the ideology were spot on for the most part.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 07/03/2023 13:29

that rather than tat, though maybe I was right first time.

MrsBertBibby · 07/03/2023 13:30

It all sounds like a lost cause to me.

Just that thread. FTD seems to think that someone feeling they are another race can be valid (I'd dragged Rachel Dolezal in) so I said it was obviously fine for a honky to do blackface as long as they said they identified as black.

Boom!

To be fair they have also blocked The Cyclist and others on the frother side. Ah well, there's not really anything more that I can say there anyway.

Britinme · 07/03/2023 15:51

To me Rachel Dolezal seems like the unanswerable point, which is probably why you got blocked.

angelico53 · 07/03/2023 18:34

@duc748 blimey, Duc, what a connection!

I always think of a David Mitchell novel when I hear The Nightfly. In case you haven't read it, one of the first-person narrators (it's a novel of connected but independent stories, like most of his stuff, like Cloud Atlas. Forgive me if you are familiar wit this, but Bat Segundo, a late night DJ, is so Donald Fagan.

duc748 · 07/03/2023 18:42

Haven't read Mitchell. Perhaps it's just that as I move into sentimental old age, I find cool and irony rather less appealing, and look for something with a bit more heart.

angelico53 · 07/03/2023 18:46

Well, I can surely see that, old top. Good for you.

angelico53 · 07/03/2023 18:48

Have you read any Leif Enger? Peace Like a River has more heart than you could shake a stick at, an understated but gripping story, terrific characters and a hint of the divine. More than a hint, actually, but don't let it put you off. Won all sorts of prizes, IIRC.

What have you ngot your nose into atm, then?

duc748 · 07/03/2023 18:52

I'm afraid I'm not a big reader these days.

MavisMcMinty · 07/03/2023 19:17

Ah go on then, I’ll be post 1000. Goodbye thread. x
