Thread 5 - TalkExiles: "The Planet Goes On Being Round"

1000 replies

Kucinghitam · 07/02/2023 14:43

Continuation of previous lifeboat threads (thread 4).

Gather here all ye refugees from the JTT Flat Earth Society, welcome to the reassuringly oblate spheroid of MN! Ye all already know the answers to the questions "How the heck do I format my post?" "Why can't I edit my typos?" "What do those acronyms mean?" and most importantly, "Where is everybody that I used to know?"

So really we're all here just to chat randomly.

Hello, new thread!

Britinme · 07/02/2023 14:45

<Swims to lifeboat... pulls self on board and sits here dripping>

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 07/02/2023 14:48

All aboard

Ginmonkeyagain · 07/02/2023 14:57

Marking new thread

Kucinghitam · 07/02/2023 15:11

Should we be distributing blankets and hot tea?

BinkerTell · 07/02/2023 15:26

@CyanCrystalViolet definitely defer and focus on your dissertation which it sounds like you are looking forward to doing.

I have had a day of calls with liquidisers so have now collapsed on the sofa.

Tricyrtis2022 · 07/02/2023 15:29

Sorry to hear you're going through this shite, BinkerTell, and hope you can get sorted without too much pain. I've been there and know how crap it is, but I will say that going bust gave me the opportunity to make huge changes in my life, for the better. It's one hell of a thrust block. I hope you find that too.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 07/02/2023 18:29

I only read the first page of that but was glad the majority feeling was 'show us the lovely holiday pics'.

bignosebignose · 07/02/2023 18:45

I’ve just downloaded Concertino, recommended by angelico on the last thread. Looks like a great app.

SinnerBoy · 07/02/2023 20:55

On hot tea, I've just provided my nephew and his wife (from foreign shores) with hot tea and chocolate eclairs. They went for a walk after dinner.

They've been to Edinburgh, so he could collect a film trophy, for the London Film Institute (?). He's just graduated in cinematography.

They stopped off en route back to Guildford.

NotDrowningJustCrowing · 08/02/2023 02:10

How wonderful to study cinematography! People often only notice it when the cinematography is epic, think Lawrence of Arabia or fuck off with your blue people, think Fucking Avatar but I often notice when I'm really feeling a film it will have a lot to do with the cinematography. Also sound, you all have to see Tar for the sound. And the fact that it is v good.

Hello lovely new thread to fill up with stuff.

@CyanCrystalViolet I have nothing useful to say other than to agree with others and send love so that you know you're being heard/seen and that I'm not some bastard who takes no notice of the woes of others. Although I often am a self-centred arsehole.

I may have missed others. I will catch up with you soon. I do read but sometimes my brain just drops everything out of it before I type especially when it's on a new thread so I can't see what I read about two minutes ago.

Got a whole lot of unpacking and sorting done today, had a couple of friends with me and we have now done the books. Tomorrow I'll take a photo of the majority of the books which when they were all piled up made me and my friend Snoop laugh. We packed them together and the packing included sending a huge amount to charity shops. I was convinced I had somewhere around one hundred books left. I was quite wrong.

BinkerTell · 08/02/2023 10:26

I realise just how much I have missed reading your posts @NotDrowningJustCrowing. It's a delight to be in the same online space with you again after all these years.

And thanks @Tricyrtis2022 I'm definitely finding the loss of the business hard - not financially but I've built a brand, a team, a reputation, done some amazing work and punched well above our weight in the industry we work in.

StephanieSuperpowers · 08/02/2023 10:28

Hope better things come soon, Binker.

Dotellhimpike · 08/02/2023 11:56

On the subject of substances. Now I'm almost settled in. the new house, my next project is to buy a mushroom growing kit and spores, which is all perfectly legal. It's been years since I tripped the light psychedelic and I think it's time to once more venture into cerebral space.

I may also risk buying some edibles online, probably better for my health if I neck some gummies to relax after a long day, rather than a couple of cans which adds up if it's every night.

Dotellhimpike · 08/02/2023 11:57

Ooh, just made a post that got hidden by mumsnet HQ. Wonder what rules I broke?

HopeMumsnet · 08/02/2023 11:59

Don't worry, donttellhimpike, it was just the AI flagging nortiness, so we've reinstated.

MissLawls · 08/02/2023 12:18

Hello shiny new thread. Am intrigued by Pike's post getting hidden for nortiness then reinstated. What larks! Only mushrooms I've ever tried are chestnuts.

Right now I am struggling to get my Christmas weight gain off and it's not budging. I blame the cold weather and having to make do with less heating due to ridiculous cost of electricity. And having to wear so many layers feels like wearing a fat suit so even if I did get the weight off I'd still look and feel fatter. Ugh. How I HATE Winter. I had an uncle who went off to Portugal for two months every year. Said was cheaper than paying heating bills. I wish I could do that! Wouldn't that be great! Emigrate to warmer climes for the Winter like birds do!

Kucinghitam · 08/02/2023 12:21

I'm completely fascinated by the AI detecting possible nortiness!

OP posts:
MissLawls · 08/02/2023 12:24

I'm bit miffed I've never been flagged for nortiness. I like to think I'm a bit norty even at my age.

Tricyrtis2022 · 08/02/2023 12:28

And having to wear so many layers feels like wearing a fat suit

I know that feeling! A few years ago I woman I work for asked me if I'd lost weight and I said, 'No, I'm just not wearing six layers'.

Kucinghitam · 08/02/2023 12:32

Emigrate to warmer climes for the Winter like birds do!

Yeah I just did that, the downside is coming back here and feeling waaaaaay colder than if I hadn't gone.

Horrible isn't it! Restricts movement but we have to try to keep warm. Also going out - oh joy! Yet MOAR layers have to be applied, woolly hat, gloves, decent shoes and even then the cold air penetrates and staying home just seems so much more enticing.

Emigrate to warmer climes for the Winter like birds do!

Yes that is a downside of my plan. Thing is where to go!? I'd get bored rigid in the Canaries which is closest place where it's warm enough. I don't think southern Spain or the Algarve would be that much warmer. I've done the Canaries in January and was lovely to get that bit of Winter sun. A week or two is fine but two months!? I'd go out my mind with boredom. Nowt do but soak up the sun. Mind the older you get the more you need it I think.

duc748 · 08/02/2023 12:48

Hello new thread. Wasn't aware of nortiness, wouldn't want the cold breath of MNHQ on my neck...

duc748 · 08/02/2023 12:52

And let me ask here the question I asked my son last night: am I the last person in the world to discover that Jeremy Vine and Tim Vine are brothers?
