Thread 5 - TalkExiles: "The Planet Goes On Being Round"

1000 replies

Kucinghitam · 07/02/2023 14:43

Continuation of previous lifeboat threads (thread 4).

Gather here all ye refugees from the JTT Flat Earth Society, welcome to the reassuringly oblate spheroid of MN! Ye all already know the answers to the questions "How the heck do I format my post?" "Why can't I edit my typos?" "What do those acronyms mean?" and most importantly, "Where is everybody that I used to know?"

So really we're all here just to chat randomly.

Fabulous cats @MrsBertBibby!

I'm loving the fascinating things thread @BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn - I can see there are going to be a lot of dangerous time-sucking rabbit-holes Grin

That fascinating things thread is...fascinating. Couldn't help myself and joined in.

MrsBertBibby · 07/03/2023 09:19

Morning! Damn it's nippy!

Sinner to be fair, I've yet to find a dead slow worm. They play dead very well, and reanimate remarkably fast when carried up to the compost heap.

angelico53 · 07/03/2023 09:25

@duc748 - yes, I agree re. Steely Dan having a cold side. Still find them musically and lyrically fascinating though. I mean, how many songs do you know about the witness protection programme, a nuclear bunker in the garden, an expensive celeb rehab centre and so on? Have you seen the classic album film of Aja?

MavisMcMinty · 07/03/2023 09:27

Same here actually, although we have had one or two dead slow worms, probably when we weren’t around to rescue them soon enough. A few live but tail-free ones too. The slow worms hiss when you rescue them, but I don’t begrudge them that.

angelico53 · 07/03/2023 09:32

I've just had a look at the thread of hate over there, and it isn't, really. A decent discussion though nothing new to us old lags, and somewhat frustrating to see old misconceptions and phony stats (that had been properly analysed and unpacked by brilliant women ion the previous incarnation of the threads) being brought forward once again. Confirms my view that most readers over there haven't actually looked into the issues in anything approaching depth but have accepted the specious it-looks-like-we-have-to-be-transpositive views at dace value.

Also laughed out loud at a question as to why the thread is now alright. Sol has been banned, emo hasn't turned up, and who was the other notable drive-by?

But apart from a couple of Jennys, 28 and rad, it's all men there I think.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 07/03/2023 09:49

Happily thinking 'yes it's cold but at least there's no snow' I looked out a different window. Hills all white! eek.

MavisMcMinty · 07/03/2023 09:53

I looked up Devon on the weather news, and got told there was 0% chance of snow here, which upset me. I’d’ve coped much better with a “2% risk of snow”, it would effectively be the same as 0% but without the hope-dashing.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 07/03/2023 09:58

I've turned into an old person saying 'yes it's pretty but' and then droning on about falling and not being able to get to the shops and (very much worst of all) the possibility of power cuts. I really don't like power cuts.

That said, the longest power outage I've experienced in recent years was in August (can't remember the year) which shows how silly it is getting agitated in advance.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 07/03/2023 10:01

It's all boards.ie 's fault anyway, their weather chatterers are describing this as a Cold Spell (of depth and duration uncertain!) which has an unsettling 'rodents of unusual size' buzz.

MrsBertBibby · 07/03/2023 10:04

I am very aggrieved about the cold. I'm on a between job break and I want to be playing in the mud.

And I am meant to be working on my fitness after snapping my ankle in October.😡

And I've already lost 2 ceanothus and a pittosporum.😪And god knows what else.

Britinme · 07/03/2023 10:07

@angelico53 - I dropped in to post one brilliant link I picked up here but that's all. My husband still goes there but only posts on a few non-controversial threads.

Britinme · 07/03/2023 10:08

And my husband shoveled out a 10 inch snowstorm off the driveway at the weekend, which is not bad for an 80 year old.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 07/03/2023 10:14

My garden is already suffering from the last two blasts, my Camellia has almost no flowers except on the side nearest the house (like, right up against the wall, invisible unless you walk round the bush) and the Euphorbia mellifera is hanging on a thread - this may finish it off. I've also lost a couple of tree lupins but they probably seeded themselves so replacements will come in.

I used to have a Pittosporum and don't think I have it any more - must have been a winter during my elderly parents years that did for it.

Kucinghitam · 07/03/2023 10:17

We have a yellow warning for snow on Thursday (as opposed to a warning for yellow snow). I'm really hoping it comes to nowt because I'm firmly in the "it's pretty but" camp.

Phoebe update: She's apparently back to almost normal, only a slight sashay in her walk. She was most aggrieved to be shut in her bathroom den last night and attempted to claw down the door - in the end I did let her out so she could resume her normal sleeping place of My Feet. Also this morning bashed down my attempt at blocking off the stairs with sheets of cardboard, and demanded that the catflap be unlocked.

I'm mightily relieved (but also scratching my head about what could have caused it - as per suggestions on here and by the vet, I suppose a growth in her brain or on her spinal cord?)

MrsBertBibby · Today 09:19

Sinner to be fair, I've yet to find a dead slow worm. They play dead very well, and reanimate remarkably fast when carried up to the compost heap.

Well, that's a relief!

SinnerBoy · 07/03/2023 10:25

In other news, a sometime colleague rang, offering some work. He's in Manchester, very cold, but no hint of snow.

You mean they're just covering the same ground that we did, but now it's not evil?

Tricyrtis2022 · 07/03/2023 10:39

Good news about the work, Sinner.

And about Phoebe too.

MavisMcMinty · 07/03/2023 10:50

macman is 65 today. I, in my 50s, share a bed with a 65-year old. Grossy McGrossface.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 07/03/2023 10:50

How could it be evil when it's (almost) all men?

OY!

MavisMcMinty · 07/03/2023 10:55

It’s fine really. He hits all the milestone birthdays 5 years before me, which means my head is used to the idea when it’s my turn.

A patient of mine once told me that as soon as his birthday comes round, he starts calling himself/thinking of himself as the age he’ll be next year, to make it less of a shock when it happens.

mach2 · 07/03/2023 11:35

But apart from a couple of Jennys, 28 and rad, it's all men there I think.

If anyone there points this out I'll tell em that they chased the women away 😁

angelico53 · 07/03/2023 12:16

Actually, there's he**ker as well, forgot. So I'm completely wrong.
