Continuation of previous lifeboat threads (thread 4).

Gather here all ye refugees from the JTT Flat Earth Society, welcome to the reassuringly oblate spheroid of MN! Ye all already know the answers to the questions "How the heck do I format my post?" "Why can't I edit my typos?" "What do those acronyms mean?" and most importantly, "Where is everybody that I used to know?"

So really we're all here just to chat randomly.

Senior moment!

Anyone else hear the sonic boom earlier today? Made our windows rattle, it did.

bignosebignose · 04/03/2023 16:29

Sage advice from Yoda.

I'm just going to vent my relief on the thread, having held it in and acting cheery all day.

So, sometime in the middle of last night I heard a crashing/tumbling noise, followed by a pause, followed by another crashing/tumbling noise. This, I thought, was part of a dream.

This morning I noticed Phoebe didn't come out from her current favourite spot pressed against the curved radiator in my bedroom. She did make her usual Hello! chirrup, so I gave her a quick chin-tickle and topped up her food and water, before we went out (DC have an activity first thing on Saturdays).

On the back from the activity, while DC were talking about their dreams, I mentioned the crashing dream and they reminded me that we in fact have a Ring camera covering our front hall (we never have notifications on that camera unless we're away on holiday, so I tend to forget it's there).

Well, to my horror, it turned out I hadn't dreamt the noise - it was Phoebe, she had fallen first down the short bit of the stairs to the landing, then tried to go down the longer bit of stairs and tumbled like a sack of spuds all the way down to the bottom. When we got home, we rushed to check on her and realised that she couldn't walk properly: her back half was basically swaying about like a drunken sailor. I was convinced she'd suffered a spinal injury.

I managed to get an emergency appointment at the vet this afternoon. So after a lot of very detailed prodding and squeezing, the vet came to the reassuring conclusion that nothing is broken or torn or internally injured, all pumps and plumbing are in working order, and Phoebe is probably just a little sore and bruised. So that's a massive relief.

On the downside, the vet also concluded (having reviewed the Ring footage) that Phoebe isn't wobbly because she fell down the stairs. She fell down the stairs because she's wobbly. In other words, it's probably a sudden brain thing, like a small seizure or stroke.

Oh poor Phoebe and poor you. Is she an indoor cat normally - asking because it will be easier to know what is going on from now on. Did the vet indicate that it's common thing?

Winterborne74 · 04/03/2023 17:03

Scary stuff about Phoebe. Hope she’s OK for a while yet.

Thanks for all the angelica recommendations. Fortunately I did the shopping a few days ago so had time to order it online. It’s in the freezer now. Fingers crossed 🤞.

I like both castles in different ways. I admire the commitment to the concept in the first although it’s not for me. The East Coker one is lovely and not that far from me. It’s been on the market for ages though as I remember posting it on B,D&S a few months ago.

Oh poor Phoebe and poor you. Is she an indoor cat normally - asking because it will be easier to know what is going on from now on. Did the vet indicate that it's common thing?

She has a catflap and is allowed out, but ever since she went deaf a couple of years ago she basically hardly ever goes out unless we're outside with her. I don't think she'd be very bothered if we locked it permanently.

The vet said these weird brain things can happen to old cats - a stroke or a tumour or something. We're to keep her from using the stairs or attempting to jump/climb, just for the next few days, to see if she improves once the sore bruisiness wears off. So we have made a Phoebe-den in the broken bathroom - that's where her litter tray is anyway, we've put her food and water in there and under the radiator a cosy cardboard box lined with her favourite red blankie. She is still eating and drinking and using her litter tray, still enjoying snuggling up with us and having her head scratched. Not in any obvious pain apart from what the vet reckoned was expected soreness from the fall.

If she continues wobbly in the behind, we could have a range of tests done (scans and the like) - but the vet said that she wouldn't recommend that for such an old cat because it's distressing and any treatment would be limited at best. So we may be looking at The End. But I'm not going to dwell on that right now.

Poor Phoebe - I hope the wobbliness goes away and she recovers nicely.

SinnerBoy · 04/03/2023 17:20

Oh dear, Kuc, poor old Phoebe, I hope she's back to her old self soon.

Our dog fell down the stairs last year. She's not meant to go upstairs, but we tolerate her in the back bedroom, where we have the computer. She didn't seem to be injured, but she did look embarrassed, if that's possible.

Now, she comes down very slowly, leaning against the wall, or the bannister.

Britinme · 04/03/2023 17:22

Oh poor Phoebe! I hope she makes a recovery, Kuc.

Tricyrtis2022 · 04/03/2023 17:39

Poor Phoebe, I hope she feels better soon.

UnfortunatePoster · 04/03/2023 17:41

We're having issues with our brindle greyhound. Suddenly started limping a couple of weeks ago, so off to the vet. Vet thought it looked dodgy, so did a couple of x-rays and sent them off to be looked at by specialists. They said it might be bone cancer, so she's had a biopsy. When they did the biopsy they did another x-ray which was a lot clearer, and looked like a break rather than cancer - phew! We got the results of the biopsy 1.5 weeks later - all negative, but in the meantime the biopsy site has become infected, so she's now on antibiotics.
She's been on them for 3 days so far, and the swelling's getting worse, poor thing's really suffering. I'm not sure what to do now tbh - the vet is now closed for the weekend. If only the x-ray had been clearer the first time we might have avoided all this.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 04/03/2023 17:50

Poor Phoebe - I hope she is unwobbled soon and it it was just One Of Those Things rather than an ongoing problem.

And likewise for the limping greyhound. I'd expect antibiotics to be showing some effect after 3 days, so fingers crossed things improve very shortly.

Kucinghitam · 04/03/2023 18:10

Oh poor greyhound! That all sounds very painful, I hope the antibiotics kick in soon.

A very sad nice and wife had to have kitten Tofu put to sleep this morning. Neurological disorder of some sort, fitting and worse.

A beautiful little tabby, as sweet as could be. How is it that we form such close relationships with species that are miles away on another branch of the tree? And we do - of that I have no doubt - and they can be very nuanced relationships. We once counted the words that Bailey understood and it was close to 50, I think; can't remember exactly, and there were some redundancies. But still. And the emotional connection is even more extraordinary. We've had to moderate our bad language because he gets upset, presumably mostly because he's found the swearing associated with anger and stuff in the past - but to even understand that, and the early signs of it, is remarkable. To me, at least!

Anyway, Tofu has gone where the good cats go (and I've never met a bad cat).

angelico53 · 04/03/2023 18:28

@Tricyrtis2022 - hahahaha!

Kucinghitam · 04/03/2023 18:32

@angelico53 Oh so sorry about Tofu, RIP little kitten.

How is it that we form such close relationships with species that are miles away on another branch of the tree?

We've often talked about this ChezKuc, how amazing it is that this little fluffy predator chooses to live with us, be picked up and carried around, snuggle fast asleep on our laps, so trustingly.

@Tricyrtis2022 that's hilarious!

Very sorry to hear about Tofu, @angelico53. I agree, when pets die the heartbreak is shockingly painful. When we had to have Toby put to sleep I cried every day for weeks. His death hurt more than any human's I've known.

UnfortunatePoster · 04/03/2023 18:33

Lots of sympathy Angelico, so sorry about Tofu.

Britinme · 04/03/2023 18:35

When I had to have my 20 year old black cat Snowball put to sleep I cried buckets. She had come over from the UK with me and it felt like a big link gone.

Britinme · 04/03/2023 18:36

I meant to add - so sorry about Tofu, @angelico53

Dotellhimpike · 04/03/2023 18:51

weaseleyes · 04/03/2023 19:01

Commiserations @angelico53, that's wretched news. Here's hoping other poorlies rally well.

angelico53 · 04/03/2023 19:03

Yes, that wasn't a sensitive post and I'm very sorry indeed if I've upset anyone. I am so sorry.

Thank you, everyone, though, for your kind words.
