Thread 5 - TalkExiles: "The Planet Goes On Being Round"

1000 replies

Kucinghitam · 07/02/2023 14:43

Continuation of previous lifeboat threads (thread 4).

Gather here all ye refugees from the JTT Flat Earth Society, welcome to the reassuringly oblate spheroid of MN! Ye all already know the answers to the questions "How the heck do I format my post?" "Why can't I edit my typos?" "What do those acronyms mean?" and most importantly, "Where is everybody that I used to know?"

So really we're all here just to chat randomly.

I like the ‘boring’ vegetables best I think. Cabbage of any kind, broccoli, carrots, kale, onions, spinach. Love asparagus in season but wouldn’t buy it any other time. Affordable tomatoes in the UK are rubbish so I don’t bother and even the more expensive ones are hit and miss.

Same here, my favourite veg is spring greens. In fact I really like all brassicas. And leeks - spring greens and leeks together is gorgeous.

Britinme · 02/03/2023 09:09

Leeks are lush.

VicSynix · 02/03/2023 09:14

We are very lucky and have an allotment, grow a lot of our fruit and veg. Right now, we've got a handful of leeks left. And that's it - we may get some purple sprouting brocoli and some spring cauliflowers in about a month, though they got severely attacked by the sodding pigeons. Eating seasonally is great and we try to do it, but we'd be starving if we relied just on the allotment.

Very similar! I find the green leafy brassicas to be the most versatile (and cheap) - cabbage, kale, spring greens. They suit both Western and Asian recipes.

I'm waiting to see what the guidelines etc are on the revamped site. In truth, there are some posters there who I miss. But far too many posters I have enjoyed over the decades whose dismissal of women at the end of the whole thing was a real shock to me.

I can't quite see how I could ever have anything to do with some of them, ever again. Maybe the "ignored user" function will work, I don't know. And the very presence of one or two posters might be enough to keep me away.

You can see that I haven't quite let go yet.

I saw JtS's hurty note and I'm not impressed. It's perfectly possible to be grateful for the work he did and to also be furious that he excluded women so hatefully.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 02/03/2023 09:40

We have a few onions left from last year (although many are now sprouting), and the kale is still going strong. Tomatoes are dried only, although MaBint still has a few fresh ones left - picked green and ripened on the windowsill over winter. The most abundant fresh thing we have at the moment is kumquats.

angelico53 · 02/03/2023 09:58

Here's the updated JtT policy on gender, apparently modelled on MN guidelines:

www.justthetalk.co.uk/genderidentity

weaseleyes · 02/03/2023 10:06

I see they've reinstated the women and girls sex-based rights thread. The overall policy looks reasonable, but I'm not sure I'm tempted to return, and I am certainly not missed as a latterly sporadic poster. I still might check in occasionally, though

Likewise

StephanieSuperpowers · 02/03/2023 10:45

I don't think I would return either - not that it will make any difference. I was interested to see though that even after all the discussion etc, the idea that we're just unreasoning hate filled bigots didn't get a second think over.

I may have a look in, from time to time, after reading their "Don't" section, but I can't see me being a regular again. I did enjoy the news and politics discussions and the whimsy stuff, which isn't as common here, but I am enjoying MN far more than JTT in the latter days.

Cherry-picking,

In truth, there are some posters there who I miss. But far too many posters I have enjoyed over the decades whose dismissal of women at the end of the whole thing was a real shock to me.

This, for me. I saw a post there yesterday by GF, who I thought had disappeared, and certainly falls into the 'poster who I miss' category. But most of 'em...

I have never met a donkey who didn’t want to bite me.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 02/03/2023 11:19

I had to go shopping again and am chagrined to have to admit that Lidl only had six different sorts of tomatoes.

Aldi otoh had nine (variants on plum or round, on vine or off, various sizes, organic or not).

I did not buy any as I have enough at home already.

That sounds like an old music hall song!

MavisMcMinty · 02/03/2023 11:32

When I lived in Thailand as a child, apples had to be imported so they were too expensive for most people. Whenever we came back to the UK the two things we were most excited about were the cheap availability of apples and being able to drink water straight from the tap (my sister and I extended this to drinking our bath water).

mach2 · 02/03/2023 11:34

I see there's a "no misgendering" rule. Very hard to observe when it comes to Sam Smith and various late-transitioning rapists.

MissLawls · 02/03/2023 11:35

No problem getting tomatoes here in Leek. Maybe it's because I live in a town named after a vegetable...

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 02/03/2023 11:38

I think in theory we aren't meant to misgender here, hence some rather elaborate wording in some posts. Those rules are a massive step forward (people are even going to be allowed to discuss biology) and I think may be based on those applied here.

I've just signed on and started my new 'ignore this poster' list.

StephanieSuperpowers · 02/03/2023 11:38

Well since nobody has posted yet (probably because they basically pitchforked us out), it may be the compromise that satisfies nobody.

MissLawls · 02/03/2023 11:44

It's the buttons on the bottom make JtT unusable for me. They hurt my eyes. I have very sensitive eyes. I can't use Twitter anymore either because the font on my phone app (IOS) is too thin. Tho it's fine on the computer. Same goes for mumsnet on my phone. The text is too small. Hence my social media activity is all now severely limited due to eyesight issues. And I can't watch much TV as I can't hear it and sight issues means I can't read subtitles.

All I can say is thank the lord for audiobooks!

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 02/03/2023 11:46

So JtS's final act was to doxx the new overlords. Or rather, overladies, which is an interesting and very reassuring development.

and yet people are still grovelling to him.

mach2 · 02/03/2023 11:48

He revealed their identities?

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 02/03/2023 11:50

Indirectly - he gave the company name, quick google and there they are. Two immediately identifiable very good peeps, a third I don't recognise but clearly in good company.

Exposed to every nutter.

Also not to call people terf or cis, which is a step forward. As Steph says though, maybe a bit late since we'd already been told to fuck off. It would be an apt monument to the whole caper if that thread just sat there with nothing other than the opening post.
