It is now more difficult to export, meaning more things that are produced in the UK are all left for us 🤗. Oh, hold on a minute…

We have also been able to help a the economy of a fellow neighbouring country. UK passports were produced in the UK, they are now made in France 😳

@Alexandra2001 FOM has massively boosted Europes economy and made tourism very quick and easy.

Take a look at

Autumn 2023 Economic Forecast: A modest recovery ahead after a challenging year - European Commission (europa.eu)

If the figures are accurate, there is very little difference between France and Germany compared to the UK

FOM started long before 2023/24.

The UK at the forefront of designing the SM, then there is Eastern Europe, do you think those countries would have grown like they have with strict border controls in place?

The movement of goods in and out of the UK/EU is now harder and more expensive.

Of course make an argument on border control but don't pretend FOM hasn't, over decades, benefited the European economy & culture... you might have liked the 30miles queues on the Brennen pass but no one else did.

@Alexandra2001 but don't pretend FOM hasn't, over decades, benefited the European economy & culture.

But will the benefits of the past continue? Looks unlikely as 4 EU members are not in Schengen and 11 others are tightening borders due to increase in illegals, crime and terrorist threats.

The is growing support in Bulgaria to rejoin USSR

But surely the UK since no longer shackled to the EU would have grown massively more than the EU?

In or out of the EU does not change a Country's exposure to World events.

COVID rocked the World.

Then Russia invaded the Ukraine which increased energy prices.

Troubles in the Red Sea have forced shipping to pass around the bottom of Africa. This adds to the cost and time it takes for goods to arrive in both the EU and the UK

Certainly being outside the EU was a Brexit benefit, which meant that the UK was able to deal with the challenges much less effectively than other countries.

So who has left Schengen? (which allows for restrictions on border control)

So what if Bulgaria leaves the EU? the EU did very well with less than half the countries it has now & as with the UK, no point being in something the pop. no longer wants to be part off.

The EU is a mature economy now & as you say "world events" got in the way, so of course growth rates are lower, same with the UK.. though doubtless Ukraine will boost European manufacturing!

GlobeTrotter2000 · 17/01/2024 12:18

I agree. The explosion in Eastern Europe in 2006/2007 was all about cheaper labour and Germany's fear that Russia would take back Eastern Europe.

though doubtless Ukraine will boost European manufacturing!

What makes you think the Ukraine will not source from cheaper countries?

Cheap Labour?

Do you have any idea of the billions of euros poured into the ex soviet states? & how can it be cheap when EU countries have to pay any worker their own national min wage and re also highly unionised, French unions would soon be blockading M/Ways if Peugeot tried to slash wages.

EU did this to grow their economies, limit migration (over time) and provide markets for trad EU manufacturers and UK companies exported a great deal to these emerging economies.

On Ukraine, i was talking about the additional weapons manufacturing atm... longer term, Ukraine may well (at least in part) fall under the Russians

Crikeyalmighty · 17/01/2024 12:51

Personally I think the EU was a very good thing- Schengen though I think will change due to an evolving world situation - nothing has to be set in stone though - surely if one bit is no longer fit for purpose you change that bit- you don't throw the baby out with the bath water and I think that's what the UK did. It was always possible to have strict criteria on FOM and working and benefits etc- they were certainly in place when we lived in Denmark- problem with UK was it couldn't be arsed at a government level. There were teams of people in Copenhagen out there all the time checking employees in businesses that were a bit 'under the radar' for overseas workers etc, plus ID cards- everything was digitised- you could get Jack shit unless you were on their digital system fully checked and that included housing, healthcare etc.

StarlightLady · 17/01/2024 14:08

We were lied to about so many things too. We were told leaving had enabled blue passports. Not that the colour of a passport is any benefit as such, although red is easier to spot. But there was nothing to stop the UK producing blue passports when we were in the EU.

The EU is going to regulate so that they have a standard device charger, for tablets, phones, e-readers. Less to take away with you when traveling and less chargers becoming obsolete. The UK’s response was that it would stifle innovation.

GlobeTrotter2000 · 17/01/2024 14:53

@StarlightLady

The black passport I have seems to less robust than the previous red passport. The gold lettering on the front cover did not last long.

Crikeyalmighty · 17/01/2024 15:20

@StarlightLady the uk loves an opportunity for a rip off!!
