The inquiry is certainly putting to bed the lie "Thank God we had Boris and not Corbyn...."

I wouldn't be so sure - you posted this guarantee a few days ago;
'[I] can guarantee there would have been no parties at no10 with Corbyn, perhaps a jam making seminar'

Well, it turns out that Corbyn attended an 'anarchists' carnival -

Oct 2020 Now Jeremy Corbyn breaks rules at memorial: Former Labour leader was at 'anarchists' carnival' with 100 others a week after he apologised for dining with eight friends.

Is this a benefit of brexit?

Clavinova · 30/10/2023 19:46

And brexit played a part in the UK's unpreparedness

You could argue that ‘just in time’ logistics within the EU's single market deprived the UK of much needed PPE - e.g.

The NHS was deprived of large amounts of protective gear at the height of the coronavirus outbreak after a French company contracted to supply millions of masks allegedly prioritised more lucrative deals...
According to the contract, Valmy was required to respond rapidly to the NHS order and begin deliveries within weeks.
Valmy’s contract with the NHS was dealt a further blow in early March [2020] when the French government issued a decree requisitioning stocks of respirator masks

Most of those 4m doses weren't dispatched for many months, as we couldn't get them, the EU had pre ordered before the UK

It looks to me as though the UK pre-ordered first - Ursula Von der Leyen is stamping her feet here;

March 2021
EU threatens to halt Covid vaccine exports to UK unless it gets ‘fair share’

Von der Leyen said the bloc had exported 10m doses to the UK in the past six weeks, making it “country number one as far as exports from the EU is concerned”...

The majority of vaccines exported from the EU to the UK have been made by Pfizer, which distributes globally from its European production sites.

Maybe Covid is a Brexit benefit? It certainly showed who Johnson was, not fit for office.

@Clavinova are you of the opinion that politicans should not drink beer?

Clavinova · 30/10/2023 20:18

Back in January on LBC’s Call Keir, ‘Mr Rules’ claimed there were only about six in attendance. Not a convincing witness, the hesitation in answering Nick Ferrari’s question in January was noticeable. Now he’s changed his answer. It turns out Keir Starmer can takeaway, he just can’t add up…

Starmer Revises Count Up from 6 to 15 Attendees at #Beergate

It's not about whether politicians should drink beer or not.

It's more that clearly the whole lot of them (including civil servants) did not apply the rules they applied to the general population to themselves. Ergo they did not think the problem was as serious as they were telling the rest of us.

Hallett is a moron and her enquiry is a farce so I doubt whether we'll ever get to the bottom of things

All the available evidence show that Sir Keir Starmer did stick to the laws.

jgw1 · 30/10/2023 20:21

@Clavinova since you want to talk about parties, have you worked out why you think it acceptable and necessary for a 56 year old man to have a birthday party, whilst denying that opportunity to millions of children?

DuncinToffee · 30/10/2023 20:24

It's not Hallet's enquiry, it's an independent public inquiry to examine the Covid-19 pandemic in the UK.

Clavinova · 30/10/2023 20:24

I've answered that question a dozen times already on previous threads - now I'm going to watch TV.

It's not Hallet's enquiry, it's an independent public inquiry to examine the Covid-19 pandemic in the UK.

Some of the questioning - particularly of Carl Henaghan is slanted. And no it's not independent -it is just going to conclude that mistakes were made but everyone tried their best which is palpably wrong.

DuncinToffee · 30/10/2023 20:36

'Everyone did their best' is not what I would conclude from today's evidence but let's not derail this thread anymore than it already has.

I assumed the derail was to keep the thread going so more people would see all the wonderful benefits of brexit that have been revaled on this thread.

I'll summarise them now:

That is all.

Jason118 · 30/10/2023 20:50

I've read your summary, you missed some:

@caringcarer I can only say the way we measure 'what is a recession' must be different because having been to both places mentioned recently it feels like far more of a recession here- I just think our lovely gvt are jingle jangling things so it isn't 'officially' a recession -

Crikeyalmighty · 30/10/2023 21:09

The only benefit I've seen (apart from those rich people with offshore funds and those certain kind of tradesmen going round fleecing people due to lack of other tradesmen ) was the mumsnetter who was fed up of the rather attractive EU family member wafting around her family home in bra tops and generally outstaying their welcome- luckily said mumsnetter was saved by the new 90 day rule!!

What a sheltered life you ve led.... a Memorial gathering is now the equivalent of Ibiza 2020 @no10

Really Clav... we ve come to expect better! seems its not just Merkels crown that has fallen!

You keep coming back for more ridicule and thats ok, we respect you, its all you've got left.

The guy you supported.... Boris Johnson made it “impossible” for Britain to tackle Covid effectively, the cabinet secretary Simon Case told colleagues, accusing the prime minister of “changing strategic direction every day”

... but Kier had a korma... yes i expect the 230k who lost loved ones care about that... or shall we drag out the guy who attended a Nov 11th ceremony... i'm sure you ve got one or two of those up your sleeve too?

You are wrong. A recession is measured the same way everywhere. They use official statistics of how much the economy is growing eg manufacturing and services. Our service industry is doing well. We got a deal with Australia whilst the EU didn't. Were on the cusp of joining the Pacific partnership too. Germany had 2 quarters in a row of retraction which is how a recession is measured.

These official figures, on which a recession is measured, are collected and measured differently.

Germany's economy, its infrastructure and public services are way ahead of the UKs, they can afford to fall slightly and we are talking about very small differences between the UK and Germany.

Not quite sure how the pacific trade partnership is going to boost the UK & according to former govt ministers, the Australia deal, negotiated by Truss and Johnson, is bad for the UK, the EU refused to give into the Australians, shame we were so weak.
